A Colorful Field Day!

What a great day we had on Friday running the Rainbow Dash! It was a fantastic way for our students to demonstrate their cardiovascular fitness levels and perseverance. Kids had a choice of running between .86 and 3.5 miles. A few might have even run over 4 miles.  All the kids had a blast running the race route and getting splashed in a rainbow of colors.  While the morning activities were completed before the rain came we weren't so lucky with the afternoon events.  Those will be rescheduled.

Of course the day would not have been possible without the numerous parent volunteers.  A BIG Thank you to all of the parents who came out to ensure the safety of the runners on the route.  We had 58 volunteers this year.  Thank you!

Thank you to the Lafayette community for your support and generosity. We are able to accomplish great things because of it.

Have an active and fun summer!
Ms. McClure & Ms. Howes

Lost & Found

lost and found2
Are you or your child missing a favorite sweatshirt, lunch box, jacket, water bottle or family treasure? It could be in the Lafayette Lost & Found. Stop by the Main Office Trailer this week and take a look at what we have.

Next Monday, June 13 and Tuesday, June 14 we will display all the items we have in Lost and Found on a table outside the Main office. Those items not picked up by the end of the day on Tuesday, will be donated to charity on Wednesday morning, June 15. Be sure to stop by and claim your missing items.  We WILL NOT move the Lost and Found to our summer office at Deal Middle School.

Questions? Please contact Ms Beck in the front office.

Message from Nurse Cockrell
Chris Cockrell
Dear Parents,

As the end of the school year approaches, I want to remind you to pick up your child's medication from me. Please note that the physician's authorization/medication plan and action plans are valid for 12 months from the date the order was written and signed by you the parent, and physician. Medication and the authorization form/action plan may have different expiration dates, and may need to be renewed at separate times.

If you would like to make arrangements to pick up your child's medicine, or if you have questions or concerns, please contact me at the phone number or email address below.

Lice Alert

As you may be aware, lice has made a big comeback recently!  The best treatment is prevention:
  • Tie hair back in braids and ponytails (yes even boys).
  • Do not share combs, brushes, hair ties, batting helmets, bike helmets.
  • Watch for scratching of heads and look for lice and nits.  Check your children's heads daily through this next few weeks.
Go online or stop by Nurse Cockrell's office for information or a quick check to see what you are looking for. Please inform the teacher and Nurse Cockrell if your child has lice so that the rest of the parents in the class can be put on alert to watch for it.
Thank you!

Chris Cockrell, RN, BSN

Peace of Mind

Here is the Peace of Mind newsletter from Linda and Jillian or June 1.

Enjoy!

Mindfulness Over the Summer

Parents often ask me how they can help their children
to continue practicing mindfulness over the summer.
Mindyeti.com is a website chock full of mindfulness activities for kids including exercises to help with calm, focus, and connections with others.

Smiling Mind
is a website and an app for kids of all ages. Calm is an app that mostly caters to adults (although most of the exercises would be appropriate for older elementary kids at Lafayette), but it has a section called Calm Kids. Calm has beautiful pictures and sounds that would be relaxing for all ages and has specific exercises to help children fall asleep. I've tried all three out in class and the kids loved them. Many of my students are already using them. Mind Yeti and Smiling Mind are free, Calm is free but the Calm Kids section has a fee. I hope that these will be helpful to you over the summer and I hope that you will try some mindfulness with your children. A little mindfulness could make summer parenting a lot easier!

Happy Summer!
Linda

Special Bear Facts Issue

Calling all students, parents and Lafayette alumni. As a special thank you for teachers and staff moving on from Lafayette, we are publishing a special edition of Bear Facts, put out by the parents, honoring our departing staff and we need your help.

Several of our wonderful Lafayette staff members are retiring and moving on from our school next year and we want to make sure we recognize their amazing contributions to our community. If you or your children has ever had Ms. Phillips, Ms. Fratto, Ms. Hebert, Ms. Cacibauda or Ms. Raugitinane, we are looking for short messages, photos, poems, art work or anything you want to say about them and what you learned from them. We also want to honor our awesome librarian Ms. Perlin who is leaving the school at the end of the year and Mr. Kennedy who has been a great aide in the younger classrooms.

Our deadline for submissions in Friday, June 10We will "publish" the paper online and present staff members with hard copies the last week of school.

Kids who have DCPS accounts can submit through the Bear Facts link at the bottom of the Lafayette Technology Resources page. Just click here.

For folks who can can't access that link, we are collecting submissions in this Google Doc [docs.google.com] or you can drop them in Jenny Backus's HSA mailbox in the main office or mail them/drop them off at 5841 Nebraska Ave NW. Deadline for Submissions is Friday June 10
