From the HSA

Hello Lafayette Families!

It's time to get your Boogie Wonderland Auction Tickets before the price goes up on Saturday night at the door. Click here to buy your auction tickets, buy an after party ticket, or get a song on the set list by sponsoring a teacher.  And remember, every time you support the auction (ticket sales, after party, donations etc)  your child's teacher will get credit. And the teacher with the highest support for the auction wins an ice cream party for their class. Right now Ms Ritchie in kindergarten is the class to beat with Ms. Fratto, Ms DeMaria, Ms Culver and Ms Howard hot on her heels. But it is very close among ALL the classes.

Only 6 days to go. So get your tickets now.

The Boogie Wonderland Auction will be held at Wilson High School starting at 7:00 pm on Saturday, March 12.  We may be celebrating the 70's on Saturday night but our technology is totally 21st Century.  We are working with 501 Auctions and we will have TEXT bidding this year.  This is the only time we will tell you KEEP THAT CELL PHONE HANDY!    Remember - charge up the cell phones and tablets (charging station on site) and Bid, Bid, Bid to Win!

Auction catalogs went home in backpacks last night - keep an eye out for the bright yellow Boogie Wonderland Auction book.  Or, click here to view all of the amazing items.

As always, we greatly appreciate your support of Lafayette and the HSA.

See you on Saturday!
Janine & Shannon

Peace of Mind

Peace Club is back! Peace Club is an alternative lunch/recess option for kids in grades 1-5. We meet in Ms. Perll's trailer on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays to play games, build with Legos, Magna Tiles, make marble runs, and draw. Peace Club rules are very simple: be kind to everyone, share everything, include everyone, and help clean up.

Pi Day is Coming!

On Monday, March 14 (3.14), we will celebrate all things circular! On this day, dedicated to the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter, we will have our Pi recitation contest in which students try to recite as many digits of Pi as they can. Any student in grades 1-5 is welcome to pick up the first several hundred digits of Pi in the Math Cave and work to memorize them over the next few weeks. We will be awarding prizes for each grade level and anyone who enters gets a little prize. The contest will be at 10:45 in the library.

In addition to the contest, our resident artist Mr. Gregal will be screen-printing his unique Pi t-shirt design during recess on Tuesday, March 8th. Any student who is interested is welcome to bring in a light-colored shirt labelled with her or his name and class code. Students can drop off the shirts to Mr. Gregal's room in H109 and we will also be accepting shirts in the Math Cave starting Tuesday, March 1.

Happy Pi Day!

Lafayette Competes in DC Archery Tournament

This past Saturday, 27 Lafayette students assembled at HD Woodson High School to compete in the 2nd Annual DC Public Schools Archery tournament.  It turned out to be a fantastic day for all of our archers.   There were many personal bests.  And as a team we rocked the building.  Lafayette took first place for the second year in a row.

Top 3 girls were: Ciera Hamilton (214), Morgan McReady (203) and Kinzly Gootman (190)
Top 3 boys were: Aryan Amin (221), Brian Metzger (208) and Joe Finkelstein (178)

A big thank you to all the parents for getting their kids to the tournament and supporting us in this activity.

DON'T MISS THE SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT THIS WEEKEND

Reminder - the DCPS Scrabble tournament will be in the Deal cafeteria this Saturday, March 12.  Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the tournament will finish around 3 p.m. Parents are welcome. The kids play two games, break for pizza lunch, and then play two more games. Deal parents supply lunch, snacks and drinks.

The kids will play four games in teams of two grouped into divisions based on ability and experience. Lafayette players will all be in the newbie division, playing against other first-timers.
There's a $10 per child entry fee to cover prizes. That fee will be covered if your child is in the after school club with Ms. Echave and Ms. Yedwab. Be sure to let them know by this Thursday if your child would like to play with a particular partner. After that, names will be submitted to Deal and randomly assigned.

Looking forward to a great day of Scrabble!
