Message from Dr. Broquard

Dear Lafayette Families -

We find ourselves starting the second of three short weeks.  I trust that everyone enjoyed the extra long weekend and took advantage of the gorgeous fall weather.  Although the weeks of October are short, we are not short on learning or activities!  All of our classrooms are running full steam ahead, soon beginning their second instructional units.  This means that classrooms are closing out their initial units and opening up new topics, new skills, and new projects.  Be on the lookout for more information coming from your child's teacher.

Buy Your Wristbands: Lafayette Fall Festival

At this year's Fall Festival, we'll be celebrating with...The Boxtrolls!! Everyone is invited to party it up with Eggs, Fish, Winnie, and the Boxtroll family decorating pumpkins, face painting and playing games.

Lafayette Needs You at the Fall Festival!!

The upcoming Lafayette Fall Festival could not happen without fall leaf participation from an army of parent volunteers. This is a great opportunity to meet other parents, learn more about Lafayette, and show your child that Lafayette is important to you too! We are also looking for treats for the bake sale. ANY parent can bake for the bake sale and help us ensure that we don't run out of treats. Sign up now to get your choice of time slot or treat!

Lafayette Gives Back

After the Halloween fun at school, join Lafayette Gives Back

Students are invited to wear their costumes and trick-or-treat with the elderly residents, who enjoy seeing the kids decked out in their holiday disguises! The children will trick-or-treat and interact with the residents for about an hour. Siblings are welcome to participate in this event as well, but please register all children through the  For questions, contact Janine Finck-Boyle.

From the Art Room

Laurie McLaughlin, Visual Art Grades 1-5

am excited to announce that our first framed art exhibit is hung in
Laurie McLaughlin the admin trailer! Colorful mixed media storytelling arpilleras (originally created in Chile and Peru) help us celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Congratulations to the following third graders whose vibrant, delightful arpilleras were chosen for this special honor: Sonali Cohen, Vince Valenzuela, Dani Wallace, Natalie Broquard, Nithin Trikonda Ramdoss Manikandan, Anna Ponchione and Sophie Folds. Look for more art in the mega trailers soon!

In other news, check out the funny and expressive collaged Box Trolls that will decorate our Box Troll themed Fall Festival! Thank you to the second graders who helped with this project! In the midst of exploring about how artists show emotion through facial expressions, this was a perfect and hysterical way to begin our learning!

Please save and send in to the art room: yarn scraps, yogurt containers, toilet paper rolls and paper towel rolls. And remember to check out the art room blog (lafayetteartwithlaurie.blogspot.com) where I share moments in the art room and info on local contests and museum workshops (including the newest Doodle for Google contest!)
Walk to School Day Success

Wow, what a great turnout we had for a fun Walk to School Day kids walking school this year! Congratulations and good work to all of you who walked, biked and scootered your way up to the school last Wednesday. Thank you to all of the volunteers who showed up bright and early to lead the "buses" and man the prize table!

Annual Coat Drive Continues through October

Thank you to all the generous folks who have donated to the Annual Lafayette Coat Drive. We are almost at our goal but want to keep donations open for the next few weeks. We are looking for new or gently used/freshly laundered coats for children in need across the city.

We had more than 100 coats come in at the Homecoming Dance plus dozens more get dropped off last week. But we still need more, especially larger sizes. Please look for the bins outside of the school and near Dr. B's office next week or drop them off at 5841 Nebraska Ave.

Thank for you for your support.
