Message from Dr. Broquard

Fall is in the air!  We find ourselves saying goodbye to September, and welcoming October as we enter Week 6 of school.  This week is Spirit Week!  Don't forget to check out all the dress up days below:
  • Mustache Monday
  • Team Tuesday (wear your favorite jersey or tshirt)
  • Wacky Wednesday
  • Tired Thursday (aka Pajama Day!!!)
  • Dress Up Friday (it's Picture day)!
We will wrap up the week with the 1st Annual Lafayette Homecoming Dance and Coat Drive on Friday, 10/2 from 7 pm - 11 pm.  Help us put the tent to good use - tell your friends, neighbors, and alums!  There will be a DJ, drinks, dancing, and District Taco. Tickets are on sale online now and will also be available at the door.

Rainy Day Plan

If it rains, (which it won't...), please note that you will drop your student off at the following gates. Staff will meet students and be sure they are escorted into their classrooms (PreK and KDG) or into the hallways of their pods (1st - 5th)
  • Line Up Area 1 - KDG will use the Main Gate (Gate 4), 1st Grade will use Gate 5
  • Line Up Area 2 - Use the Main Gate or Gate 2 to enter campus and get onto the walkways.  Parents should say goodbye at the gates.  Students should then proceed onto the walkways and into their pods.
  • Line Up Area 3 - Students will enter using Gate 3 and proceed to their classrooms or pods.  The place to say good bye will be at the gates.
When we dismiss, we will exit in reverse, using the same gates you enter from.  I realize that if it is raining, parents will be standing in the rain waiting for their child.   This will not be a quick process - especially since we have never done it before.  Thank you in advance for your patience and sense of humor!

Spreading Good Spirit Across the City with our Annual Coat Drive

As part of Lafayette Spirit Week, we are asking all Lafayette kids and families to show some of our great Lafayette spirit and compassion by taking part in our Annual Coat Drive to help children in need at other DC public schools across the city.

Please bring a new or gently used/freshly laundered coat to school this week and drop it in plastic bins in the front of the school. Or drop it off at 5841 Nebraska Ave. We are trying to collect 300 coats for children across DC and we are only one fifth of the way there. So please check your closets or log on to Amazon Smile or use your Target Red Card and buy a new one.

You can also bring coats to the Homecoming Dance on Friday October 2. Thank you for helping keep all DC kids warm and toasty once the cold weather starts.

Lafayette Gives Back

This year we are delighted to introduce Lafayette Gives Back, a new community service program sponsored by the HSA. Lafayette Gives Back will provide our students and families with hands-on community service opportunities throughout the school year. This will be an excellent chance for our students to gain a better understanding of the needs in our region and beyond, and to see how they are able to personally make a difference. Please keep an eye on the Tuesday Bulletin, HSA website, and emails from your room parents to find out about upcoming events. If you have questions or ideas for great hands-on service opportunities, please contact Katie Burke.

Picture Day is this FRIDAY!

All students will be photographed by Bethesda photographer Freed Photography.  Both class and individual photos will be taken - no order forms - no pre-paying.

Freed Photography operates a little differently than traditional school photographers. Students will be photographed outside using sunlight and the backdrop will be various spots around the park.

From the Math Center

Math Team: Calling all 4th and 5th grade mathematicians! We are excited about another year of problem-solving and creative mathematical thinking. The Lafayette Math team will have its first meeting on Friday, October 2nd at 8 a.m. in Ms. Skubel's room (H108) and will continue meeting on Fridays at that time.

Students should enter through the main gate and proceed to the H trailer. In the next week, Ms. Duchinsky or Ms. Stanton will be providing the 4th and 5th grade math teachers with permission slips to give out to students. After that, forms will be available in the Math Center and completed forms can be placed in Ms. Duchinsky's mailbox.

For a sneak peak of what we do, try this question from the Continental Math League contest:

Janice was born in 2003. Her brother was born in 2009. In what year will Janice be twice as old as her brother?

We Hope to see you on Friday!

Is you child interested in building robots?  I am looking for other families who might be interested in starting one or more Junior First LEGO teams.  The age range is 6-9, teams are up to 6 kids. The financial commitment is $50 per team for registration costs.  Junior First LEGO League (Jr. FLL) also recommends purchase of starter kit which would be about $200 per team. Jr. FLL requires each team has 2 coaches over the age of 18 so I am also looking for someone who would volunteer to coach with me.  Meeting space can be reserved for free at the library, so I would try to have this hosted at the Chevy Chase Library, Sunday afternoons after 2 pm.  More details about the program can be found in the link here.  If you are interested, please let me know.  I would like to try to kick off the team in the next 4-6 weeks.  Please email me, Karley Sessoms: [email protected].
