From the HSA

Dear Lafayette Families:

We are happy to report about two fabulous Back to School Nights! We hope that you were able to come and visit with your child's teachers, get to see into the trailer campus and view how the school has come together. Thank you to all the teachers, staff and the Lafayette administration for an informative night. We also want to give a shout out to the HSA Board for helping to plan, support and staff both nights. We were able to interact with parents and share the HSA budget, goals, annual events and new Grizzly Gear.

Did your child come home on Friday and sing in French? Lafayette was able to celebrate our namesakes birthday with a school-wide ice cream social. Thank you to the FUN Committee and lead Courtney Corn along with her team of parent volunteers. The children loved the treats and had a great time. Want to get involved in the FUN Committee for the next events? Please contact Jenny Backus at [email protected]

This month opens up our September to Remember Donation campaign. Thank you if you and your family have already donated and became a member of the HSA; If not, then this is your chance. Please visit: www.lafayettehsa.org/donate

Our fundraising dollars help to support Lafayette and bridge the gap for programs, supplies and staff. The campaign allows families to donate at suggested levels - Golden L or Family as well as other amounts. Please support the campaign and help the HSA meet our budget goals.  If you have any questions, please contact Tonya Oliver our Membership Coordinator at [email protected].

Did you know? HSA fundraising supports teacher grants, the teachers and staff Welcome Back Luncheon, the new parent Popsicle social, the Welcome Back Breakfast and the Lafayette banner signs - leading up to and during the first weeks of school.

What is coming up? As we look toward Fall and cooler weather - our first ever Homecoming Dance and Coat drive will be held on Friday, October 2nd in the Tent (gym/cafeteria). This is a new adults only event scheduled to include Lafayette community and Alumni. Look for more information in this Tuesday Bulletin.

In closing, we want to thank everyone for the kind words and support. We are excited to see how the rest of the year unfolds.

Best,
Shannon Behm and Janine Finck - Boyle

Lafayette Directory Deadline is Wednesday Sept. 9

We need you to add or verify your information in the Family Directory database, so that we can get the directory out to you as soon as possible. We'll contact you if your entry still isn't verified, but this is a lot of work for us, so please don't make us do it! Instead, please follow these directions by tomorrow.
Directory

New families: Either send an email to Laura Comay with your contact information (parents' names, address, preferred phone numbers and emails for each parent as desired); or go here and choose "Join as a New Family."

Returning families: We need you to verify your directory information, even if nothing has changed. Go here and follow the instructions on the home screen. If you've forgotten your username or password, choose "Can't Login."

Remember, all information in the database is secure and is not shared outside the Lafayette community for any purpose.

Deadline for Directory Babysitter Listings is Friday Sept. 11

We're compiling listings of neighborhood babysitters for the Lafayette Directory. This is intended for neighborhood students--usually Lafayette alums or siblings--who will be available for weekend, evening, and other casual babysitting. The listings are free, but please only submit a listing if you expect to
be reasonably available, and limit the entry to a few sentences at most. Include your name, age, phone number and/or email address, as well as any restrictions (such as what days you are available
or what age group you want to babysit). Please email submissions or questions by Friday, September 11
to Holly Idelson,
[email protected].

From the Art Room

Laurie McLaughlin
It was fantastic to have so many of you stop by the art room at Back-to-School Night! The students and I are loving our new temporary art room and many of you agreed with me that it will be a wonderful space to make art happen this year.

A huge thank you to those of you who signed up to help our art program!!! Your room parents should be contacting you as help is needed for special projects. The first one coming up in less than a week is our second annual DOT DAY celebration. I will be e-mailing those of you who put your name on the art room sign-up sheet to see if anyone is available to help Monday, September 14 with hanging our art dots. We will have to be especially creative with our new outdoor campus!

A huge thank you also to Mr. Young and his team for removing our sweet LAFAYETTE letters from the old brick wall last spring, for carefully wrapping them, storing them and now rehanging them near our new front entrance! It's great to see such a happy remembrance of our Lafayette campus!!!

On a more practical note, please encourage your children wear dark colored clothes on art day. Some art materials stain even if they claim they are washable! And our art room aprons don't always keep off every bit of art media. Thanks so much. I am excitedly looking forward to a fabulous year of making art together!

Dot Day News

You may have heard that DOT DAY is Coming! On September 15 children all over the world celebrate creativity and the courage to make their mark! As our 1st graders put it: "Keep trying" ..."It's about perseverance" ..."Your ideas keep getting bigger and bigger"... "Never give up"... "Dot Day is about being brave!" Dot Day was originally created by a teacher after reading Peter H. Reynolds' book "The Dot". Now, millions of children celebrate Dot Day, and for the past two years, so do our Lafayette children!

HELP NEEDED to make Dot Day happen! If you can volunteer some time during or after school Monday September 14, please e-mail [email protected]. I would be so grateful and you will be a part of making Lafayette Dot Day magical!

From the Library Judith Perlin

Author Liz Pichon is coming to Lafayette!

The British author and illustrator of the Tom Gates books is coming to Lafayette on September 29 for 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. Her wildly popular illustrated books feature Tom Gates, a doodling fourth grader with a tendency to get in trouble. He's often called Great Britain's answer to The Wimpy Kid.

Cub Scout Pack 52 is accepting new members this month. Any boy in 1st through 5th grades can join Cub Scout Pack 52. Scouting is fun with a purpose - to raise boys who respect themselves and others and build strong character.  There is a strong showing of Lafayette students involved at all levels. Pack 52 is made up of families in NW Washington, Chevy Chase and Bethesda who want to be active in their community, enjoy the outdoors, and learn to serve the community. We're looking for boys who want to have fun learning new skills, make new friends, have adventures, and explore the outdoors. To find out more about Cub Scouts, interested parents and boys can come to JOIN SCOUT NIGHT at All Saints Episcopal Church on Tuesday, September 15 at 7 PM.  If you have any questions, please email Steve Bosak at [email protected].
