From the HSA

As I write this letter, I have just returned from a top notch performance by all the children who participate in noteBusters. Talented children on the stage, performing the music of Annie and Oliver, singing their hearts out. What's not to love? It brought to the forefront the many talented children of Lafayette. Whether it is a grade level performance, arts night, a drama production, or something like a noteBusters performance, it is nice to take a moment and appreciate their talent, zeal and fearlessness. Kudos to all the kids who performed tonight and to all who have performed throughout the year.

It is the final month of the school year and things are definitely winding down. On tap this week the 3rd graders are set to wow with this year's DC Theatre Caf production. The 5th graders are heading to Gettysburg and Hershey Park for an overnight excursion of learning and fun.

Today is the last day to purchase your copy of IMAGES. This wonderful publication is a collection of memorable prose and pictures by none other than the students of Lafayette. If you missed getting a copy at Arts Night, please click here and order your copy by 9 pm tonight.

If you haven't already, please make sure to register for next year. We are in the home stretch, and the more students who are registered before the end of the year, the easier the transition will be for our front office as we enter into our school renovation.

Enjoy your week!

voting_people.jpgLocal School Advisory Team Election

We have eight Lafayette parents who have decided to run for one of the four Local School Advisory Team representative positions:  Katie Burke, Kavita Chambery, Jared Cohen, Dave Gessert, Marek Gootman, Tammy Horn, Odell McCants and Carrie Willimann.  Please read through their statements in preparation for the election at our next General Meeting on Thursday, June 11.

The Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) is a group of elected and appointed members that exists for every DCPS school. The team consists of parents, teachers, non-instructional school staff and a community member to advise the Principal on matters that promote high expectations and high achievement for all students. These teams were initially established to serve in an advisory capacity to the Principal for the purpose of improving student outcomes.

Advertise in the Lafayette Directory

Each year the HSA publishes a Directory that is an invaluable resource for all Lafayette families. This year we will once again work with AtoZ Directories to produce a quality Directory, and we'd like to invite our Community families and area merchants to purchase advertising space.  It is a great way to show your support for the school, and enables Lafayette families to support our local businesses who advertise.

The Directory lists important school policies and contact information as well as class lists, student addresses, telephone numbers and parent email addresses.  As veteran members of our Lafayette Community know, the directory is owned by almost every family in the school and is checked many times each week when arranging play-dates, contacting room parents, scheduling volunteer activities, and the like. The Directory will be ready for distribution in early October 2015.

There are full page, half page, and business card advertising opportunities available. You can get a full page ad for $350, a page ad for $225, or a business card ad for $125.

We also have premium advertising spaces available.  The back cover is $900, inside front and back covers are $750, and divider pages (used to separate sections within the directory) are $500.

As a way to give Lafayette parents the first and equal chance to get the premium spots, which are always in high demand, we are holding a lottery this year for those locations.  Parents interested in a premium location or a regular ad should complete the attached form and send it to AtoZ Directories by June 10, 2015.  Once the lottery is held, AtoZ Directories will contact you to let you know your location and all the other details you will need.  There is no need to send payment or artwork until your location is finalized.

Click here for a directory form.  Please feel free to pass it on to local merchants that you think might be interested in advertising. Keep cool, have a great summer and thanks in advance for your support!

Lafayette Parent-Child Golf Tournament

Sporting commemorative hats that read  "1st Annual Lafayette Parent-Child Golf Tournament - It's All "Fore" the Kids",  4 brave foursomes and 1 sixsome of intrepid Lafayette kids and parents hit the links at Rock Creek Park starting at the crack of dawn this past Sunday. Battling blazing heat and ferocious gnats, our Lafayette weekend warriors tore up the first nine holes of the course, fueled on Dunkin Donuts, water and several bags of chips.

Congratulations to all of our participants who to a tee said they really enjoyed themselves including Team Blick, Team Soto, Team Lahey, Team Tafur, Team Haray, Team Behm, Team Burris, Team Han, Team Gordon times 2, and Team Pagano.

Special kudos to Samantha Gordon/Karrin Minott for the best score of the day, coming in just 4 strokes over par with a 36, Natalie and Josh Gordon for their second place score of 37, and Jack and Ed Pagano who came in third with a 40.

Tournament organizer John Han, a Rock Creek Golf Club native son, scored the best hole of the day when he eagled on one of the first holes.

Our deepest gratitude goes out to the snack brigade of Cora Han, Sidney Han and Chris Minott who kept our tournament players well hydrated and rewarded with popsicles and Gatorade at the end of the morning.  Just say no to heat stroke!

We are already planning next's year tournament so make sure you sign up at next year's Auction.

We will touch upon the fundamentals of drawing, painting, sculpture and printing with fun-filled exercises.  We will also devote time to longer-term multi-day projects which will be structured as a direct response to the interests and curiosities of the particular group of children.  Recent examples have included puppets, cardboard creatures, kinetic art and handmade books.   The size of the class is kept small, instruction is thoughtful, and materials are used in an inventive way.

We will meet at Capital Memorial Church at 3150 Chesapeake Street in Forest Hills near the Van Ness metro.  We have a beautiful court yard room.  The site is next to a fantastic park and playground where we will break for lunch and play. Camps are for children five years old and up.  We hope your child will join us!
