Message From Dr. Broquard

Dear Lafayette Families -

What an incredible weekend! I thoroughly enjoyed my first Fall Festival - cotton candy, pumpkin decorating, games, the haunted house, and laughing children. I was reminded this weekend of just how special our community is. A huge thank you to all the volunteers, man hours, donations, and commitment it took to create such a great event. A special thank you also goes to everyone who participated in the Yard Sale. It was a great turnout!

Over the course of the last two weeks, there has been . . .

We hope you all enjoyed your time with family and friends at this weekend's Fall Festival! The weather was perfect and as always, it was awesome to see the Lafayette community come out to support our school. Whether it was taking part in the 5th grade Haunted House or indulging in all the delicious baked goods, Lafayette's Fall Festival is truly a treat. A big Thank You to all the volunteers who donated their time and to Amy Harper for all her hard work in making the day a big success.

Also, on Saturday, Lafayette had its first community yard sale. Thank you to everyone who came out to purchase a table to benefit the HSA while at the same time selling some items that did not need to be in your attic anymore. Keep this event in mind for next year...I hear you can get a good deal on sports equipment for your kids!

Get your ghoul on, this Friday is Halloween! Be prepared to be frightened by all of Lafayette's scariest ghosts and goblins in our annual Halloween parade. Remember Friday is a half day (dismissal at 12:15) so the parade starts early this year at 9:30 am. Children should come to school dressed in their costumes. Dr. Broquard will lead our troop of scary monsters starting from the front of the school. The best viewing for parents will be in back of the school around the baseball fields. Classroom parties will follow after the parade.

Fall back, Spring forward. This weekend is Daylight Savings Time. One of my favorite days of the year. Enjoy your extra hour of sleep this weekend!

Have a terrific week and a safe and happy Halloween.

Laurie and Hope

Thank You Lafayette Families!

We had a very successful weekend at Lafayette!  The community was buzzing with so many events.

The First Annual Lafayette Community Yard Sale was a hit!  We had 31 participants selling their treasures and making deals with the many people shopping and searching for bargains. A big thank you to Jenny Backus for organizing a fun event!

Following the Yard Sale, it was time to attend the Fall Festival. The weather was perfect and it felt like most of the Lafayette Community came out to participate.  Lots of great costumes, pizza, amazing baked goods and fun games.  Kudos to Amy Harper for coordinating a successful event!

Lastly a heartfelt thank you to all of the parent volunteers who provided the manpower for both the Fall Festival and Yard Sale. We couldn't do it with out you!

Thanks All,
Shannon Behm

School Renovation Update

Community Meeting - November 12th at 7:30pm

As you may know, DC Public Schools (DCPS) and the DC Department of General  Services (DGS) are currently in the preliminary design stages for the  upcoming modernization of Lafayette Elementary School.

Please join us for a Community Meeting on Wednesday, November 12th at 7:30pm in  the cafeteria of the school for an update on the project.  In this meeting DGS will share the latest design images for community feedback and input.

Attached is a flyer with information about the meeting.   Please share the flyer with your family, neighbors and anyone whom you feel would be interested in receiving an update on the  project.

We look forward to seeing everyone at the meeting on November 12th and working together in the coming months towards a successful modernization of the Lafayette Elementary School building!

For those unable to attend the meeting, the presentation will be posted to the DGS Lafayette Project Page on the website after the meeting.

A School Improvement Team (SIT), comprised of teachers, parents, and community members, has been meeting regularly and advising the D.C. government and its contractors about the needs of our school.  Though no final decisions have been made, a tentative set of plans are available here. Questions or feedback about the project can be sent to Lafayette parent and SIT member   Gayle Moseley.
Halloween Community Fun

As you know, this Halloween is a half-day of school. The kids will be in costume, and you'll have time to kill between the morning's fun and the evening's festivities. What to do? Bring your kids, in costume, to Knollwood Military Retirement Residence from 1:30-2:30 and join the Lafayette One World Club in a costume parade, talent show and trick-or-treating extravaganza! The residents love seeing the children in their costumes, and will have plenty of treats to reward the children for their brief and fun community service. If you're interested in having your child(ren) participate in this opportunity, please contact Katie Burke for details.

Halloween Candy Drive for the Homeless

Remember that mountain of candy you collected last Halloween? Sure it tastes good for a while but wouldn't you like a longer-lasting good feeling? For the fourth year in a row the Lafayette community will be collecting Halloween candy to share with the people who come to Bethesda Cares Homeless Shelter. Each year we collect more and more candy - so much that the people at the shelter are able to give every person who comes in a piece of candy for a whole year! Bring in a bag of candy and get a free smile that will last all day! Candy donations should be brought to the Oasis on Team 3 starting the Monday after Halloween. The kids at Peace Club will be putting the candy into little baggies and making cards to send along with the candy. Thanks for helping us help other!

School Pictures

As you may recall, class and individual portraits were taken at school on October 14.  The proofs should be available for viewing online sometime in mid-November.  We will send the login information to you via Room Parents once it's available.

After the proofs are up for viewing, Freed Photography will schedule a make-up/re-take day for those students who were either absent on picture day or for portraits that need to be retaken.  Ms. Shapiro's (4th grade) and Ms. Yedwab/Ms.Jensen's classes will also have their class photos taken on that day.  Stay tuned for the specific date.  In the meantime, if you have questions please contact Gayle Moseley.

Lafayette Directory

Directory

The new beautiful green 2014-2015 Lafayette Directories should have been sent home with your oldest child last week.  Please contact Kim Ford if you did not receive one for your family.  Additional copies (very handy in the car or at work) may be purchased in the front office for $5.00.

In addition to family information, this invaluable resource also contains helpful school contact information, a babysitters directory and advertisements from all of the sponsors of the school directory. Please consider supporting the sponsors that support our school!

HSA Nominating Committee
hsa logo
This is a great way to get involved in the future of the HSA.  We are in need of three or more parents who would like to be on the HSA Nominating Committee. These individuals help find nominees for the HSA Board positions for next school year. They let interested people know what the responsibilities of the positions are and what they need to do in order to be a candidate (we'll give you all the information you'll need).  Time commitment for this job is really only a couple of hours a week and your responsibilities are over once candidates are finalized in early April.  If interested, please contact Hope Scheller or Laurie Lindsley.
