We reached a big milestone for this school year today at Lafayette. Today we celebrated the 100th of School. Over the last few years elementary schools across America have embraced this day as a way of showcasing various number concepts and skills. This week Lafayette joins the crowd, as it will be filled with activities dealing with the number 100.

Please Read:

DCPS Attendance Protocol

1) The Office of Youth Engagement now identifies students who accrue 10 unexcused absences as "chronically truant."

2) Students must be referred to court once they have reached 15 unexcused absences.

3) Students must be at school 80% of the entire school day in order to be considered "present".

Reminder

The only excusable reasons for a student's late arrival and/or absence from school are:

  • Illness or medical cause (a doctor's note is needed for 5 or more absences)
  • Medical or dental appointment
  • Death in the student's immediate family
  • Summoned to attend in judicial proceeding
  • Religious holiday
  • Lawful exclusion or expulsion from school
  • Failure of DC to provide transportation
  • Emergency or circumstances approved by LEA

In order to be acknowledged as "excused" the student must provide a note to the attendance counselor (written or electronically) from the parent and/or guardian citing at least one of the reasons listed above.

If you have any questions please contact the office and ask to speak to Ms. Bright, or email her.

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow-six more weeks of winter.  Valentine's Day is only a couple of days away, and Presidents' Day is right around the corner.  For such a short month, February is a very busy one!

We would like to thank everyone who came out to the Principal Selection Informational meeting last Thursday night.  Thanks to Mrs. Main, it looks like we are ahead of the game and will be selecting our new principal well before other schools within DCPS.  If you weren't at the meeting, DCPS has asked for input from our community regarding the qualities and characteristics we are looking for in a new Principal.  If you have suggestions regarding important issues you wish to be considered during the interview process or would like to be a parent involved with the principal interview process, please email [email protected].

Are you ready for our annual spring auction?  The Havana Nights Auction Party is scheduled for March 22nd. For more details, check out the auction page on our school website.

Your child should have brought home his or her report card this past Friday, so please search the backpacks if you have not already found it.   Please sign the portion below the dotted line and return it to school.

Valentine's Day is on Friday, but since school will not be in session, students will celebrate on Thursday, February 13th.

Have a great week!

15th Anniversary!

Marjorie McClure, Physical Education Teacher, Grades 1-5

Are you ready to JUMP? Your kids are.  What a great response we have had so far for our 15th annual JRFH event!

Permission slips were due last Friday.  If you somehow missed the deadline, please turn them in ASAP.  All participants must have turned in a permission slip in order to participate.  The after school event (2nd-5th) gets very crowded and it is too hard to find a place for students who did not sign up.  This week we will putting students in groups based on the permission slips.   If the envelope you received is lost, or somehow was never seen, you may get another from the JRFH display in the Great Hall or you may get one from Ms. McClure.

Pledges are not due until March 12th.  When finished collecting, please place funds in the JRFH envelope, fill it out completely, and then put in the JRFH box in the Great Hall. If you do collect pledges, please try to convert any cash in to a check.  This makes the process more manageable.  All checks should be made out to the "American Heart Association".  If fundraising is done on-line, just print out your report and turn into the JRFH box in the Great Hall.  Go to www.heart.org/jump and register on-line.  This is the most efficient way to raise funds for the American Heart Association.

Volunteers are needed to help with food and manage the jumpers.  Please email Ms.McClure if you are able too help with the afterschool event:  [email protected]

Jump Rope for Heart is a great activity to teach our children the importance of community service and the importance of being moderately to vigorously active every day for 60 minutes.  Thank you to the Lafayette community for embracing these two ideals. Let's do what we can to keep our children moving and continue to reach out to others in need.

Dates to remember:

Friday, February 7:  Permission slips were due
Wednesday, February 12:  Duck coupon day
Friday, February 2:  Duck coupon day
Wednesday, February 26: JUMP!!
March 12:  Last day to turn in pledges
Look Out for Lice!

Mrs. Cockrell, our school nurse, has asked us to inform you that she has been checking a number of classes at Lafayette for head lice and is finding many cases.  There are sheets about head lice in the clinic with information about what to look for and how to combat them, as well as many websites available.

It is a great way to say "Happy Birthday," "Good Luck" or just send a fun message to your child at the beginning of the school day. Print and fill out this form, place it and a payment of $15 (checks made out to Lafayette HSA) in the WLES Shout Out box in the Great Hall. Announcements and payment must be received at least seven days prior to the announcement date. Please contact Eden Burgess for more information.
