From the Principal
Lynn Main
A big thank you to all the parents who have been helping this month at the morning drop off lane. It has been so cold and yet everyday volunteers have been there to help keep the line moving and getting your children into the building safely. And thank you for being patient with us. Most of the time the back up is at the corner of Broad Branch and Northampton, not a problem with getting kids out of cars. The entire process from first car to last straggler really only takes about 20 minutes.

Please Read:
DCPS Attendance Protocol
1) The Office of Youth Engagement now identifies students who accrue 10 unexcused absences as "chronically truant."
2) Students must be referred to court once they have reached 15 unexcused absences.
3) Students must be at school 80% of the entire school day in order to be considered "present".
Reminder
The only excusable reasons for a student's late arrival and/or absence from school are:
- Illness or medical cause (a doctor's note is needed for 5 or more absences)
- Medical or dental appointment
- Death in the student's immediate family
- Summoned to attend in judicial proceeding
- Religious holiday
- Lawful exclusion or expulsion from school
- Failure of DC to provide transportation
- Emergency or circumstances approved by LEA
In order to be acknowledged as "excused" the student must provide a note to the attendance counselor (written or electronically) from the parent and/or guardian citing at least one of the reasons listed above.
If you have any questions please contact the office and ask to speak to Ms. Bright, or email her.

From the HSA
Gayle Moseley & Hope Scheller, co-presidents
This has been one cold and wintery month! As this week brings it to a close, we hope you will remember the following.
The Lafayette Enrichment Program is open for enrollment. The Winter Session starts the week of February 3rd. Although many of the classes have sold out, there are still spots left for rising artists and budding dancers in some of the classes. If you haven't already, check it out here.
Can you believe the Spring auction is just two months away? The Havana Nights party is sure to be a good time! The auction itself could use your help. The auction team is always looking for help, as well as donations. Right now they are in need of hotel stays, concert tickets (possibly in a skybox or suite), sporting event tickets, airlines miles, American Express points, and any kind of behind the scenes spectacular experience you can think of. Email if you can help, or have a connection that may be able to help us make our auction amazing.
We hope you are planning to join us for the informational meeting with DCPS officials to learn about and discuss the Principal Selection Process on Thursday, February 6th at 6:30 p.m. (dinner at 6pm). We are planning the same format as our General Meetings: pizza for sale by the slice with salad, dessert and beverage and free babysitting during the meeting portion of the evening.
Stay Warm!
-Hope & Gayle

Havana Nights Update
March 14-23 - Online Auction March 22 - Havana Nights Auction & Casino Party The auction is just two months away, and we need you! Be an event sponsor In order to make this event a success, we rely on wonderful sponsors/donors like you. Check out all the ways you can sponsor our event by donating cash here. Advertise in our Auction Catalog Do you own your own business? Want to get the word out to the Lafayette community? Why not advertise in our Auction catalog. Go here to learn more about advertising options and rates. Try an Auction Catalog Shout-Out Say "hi" to a child, thank a staff member at the school, or congratulate a sports team or class for a job well done by purchasing a shout-out in the auction catalog! It's a great thing for grandparents or special friends and family members who want to support the auction and their special Lafayette student but can't be here in person. For $25 you get up to 150 characters (approximately 15 lines) and you can include a photo or other image! Go here to purchase or for more information. Donations Our auction's success is dependent on the generous donations of Lafayette parents and their friends and family. Please consider donating an item to the auction... we need air miles, hotel reward points, Amtrak reward points, sports tickets, or anything else you can think of. Other big sellers include unique experiences such as behind-the-scenes tours or lunch with a VIP. Think about what skills you have, who you know, and go here to make your donation today. The deadline for donations is February 21, 2014. Questions? Contact the auction team. Volunteer Would you like to help transform the school for the night of the auction party? Is hanging twinkling lights one of your favorite tasks? Then we need you! Right now we are looking for volunteers to help with decorations for the event. We are also looking for a couple of volunteers interested in helping out at the beginning of the party and during the silent auction. Please email Brooke Evans if you are interested. Also...we still need help of volunteers to help with soliciting and work on the online auction system as we build our list of spectacular auction items. We need your help! The Auction Party and Online Auction generate half of the HSA's general budget and are critical to maintaining our programs at school. Interested in volunteering? Please email Shannon Behm. Thank you! The Havana Nights Auction Team
