Welcome back to the start of 2014. It seems to me just like yesterday that we were celebrating the arrival of 2000 and waiting for all the computers across the world to crash. How did so much time go by so quickly?

While we are excited to start a new year on the calendar, this is really not even the middle of the school year for us at Lafayette. The end of the first semester is January 24th. Pending any more school closings, the 100th day of school looks like it will occur the first week of February.

Please Read:

DCPS Attendance Protocol

1) The Office of Youth Engagement now identifies students who accrue 10 unexcused absences as "chronically truant."

2) Students must be referred to court once they have reached 15 unexcused absences.

3) Students must be at school 80% of the entire school day in order to be considered "present".

Reminder

The only excusable reasons for a student's late arrival and/or absence from school are:

  • Illness or medical cause (a doctor's note is needed for 5 or more absences)
  • Medical or dental appointment
  • Death in the student's immediate family
  • Summoned to attend in judicial proceeding
  • Religious holiday
  • Lawful exclusion or expulsion from school
  • Failure of DC to provide transportation
  • Emergency or circumstances approved by LEA

In order to be acknowledged as "excused" the student must provide a note to the attendance counselor (written or electronically) from the parent and/or guardian citing at least one of the reasons listed above.

If you have any questions please contact the office and ask to speak to Ms. Bright, or email her.

From the HSA

Gayle Moseley & Hope Scheller, co-presidents

Welcome back from the LONG winter break! We hope many of you are rejuvenated from many sleep-in-late mornings, a relaxed work schedule or perhaps you were lucky enough to get away for all or part of the break.

As we start the new year, the HSA is looking forward to two fun annual events. First up is our annual auction ("Havana Nights") in mid-March, followed by the Spring Fair the first weekend in May. Both events are fun to work on and plan and there are lots of different things to do, big and small, so please let us know if you are interested in helping out! If you're new to Lafayette this year or have never helped with such an event, it's a great way to meet other parents too.

Hope this week is a good one for you! Stay warm!

--Gayle & Hope

Have a custom message read to your child during the morning announcements. It is a great way to say "Happy Birthday," "Good Luck" or just send a fun message to your child at the beginning of the school day. Print and fill out this form, place it and a payment of $15 (checks made out to Lafayette HSA) in the WLES Shout Out box in the Great Hall. Announcements and payment must be received at least seven days prior to the announcement date. Please contact Eden Burgess for more information.
