Twelve years ago, Karen Allen came to my office to interview me for the Tuesday Bulletin, the weekly newsletter for the school.  Would it be possible for me to write some columns during the school year?  Just a few.  Wouldn't take that much time.  I really didn't like writing much.  I grew up in the age of the manual (yes, not even electric and I still have it at home) typewriter.  Everything was written out in longhand and then edited and typed, or if you were a really good writer you could type and compose at the same time.

From the HSA

Gayle Moseley & Hope Scheller, co-presidents

Life can be busy. Demands on our time pull us in all different directions ... family, work, school, obligations, and so much more. It's hard to keep up with it all!   We hope to make things a little easier for you this Thursday evening. We would like to invite each of you to come out on Thursday for our first HSA meeting of the year. This is your chance to hear what's on tap for the HSA, ask questions, and voice any concerns you might have about the school year ahead. This year, we are trying a new format, and we are hoping to see lots of faces, both old & new, in the crowd-please consider this your personal invitation. Also, we are planning an HSA Giveaway, and Thursday's meeting is the perfect time to join the HSA before the September 30th deadline.

Give with Target has extended their deadline 9 days! We now have until September 30th to get as many votes as possible. Vote each day, and encourage friends and family to vote as well. Remember, every vote equals one more dollar we can put towards Lafayette and enriching the lives of our children.

Finally, we would like to send a big "thank you" out to Jared Cohen for organizing the New Parent Social at Jake's American Grille last Wednesday. It was fun to meet new parents, and nice to see veteran parents welcoming everyone to our community. What a great evening!

Please check our website often for up to date happenings at Lafayette and feel free to contact us anytime. Gayle: [email protected]; Hope: [email protected]

Have a fabulous week!

Give with Target - Deadline Extended to September 30th!

Give with Target
Every year Target gives up to
$5 million to schools all over the country through Give With Target. Let's add Lafayette to the list of schools that benefit from this simple program!

Here's what you need to know:

Simply go to http://givewith.target.com/school/73359# and vote for our school weekly until September 30th or until $5 million has been awarded, whichever occurs first. It takes just 25 votes to start. After that, Target will donate $25 to our school. Upon receiving 25 votes, each additional vote equals $1 more for up to $10,000 per school. Log on and start voting today!

From the Art Room...
Laurie McLaughlin, Art Teacher, Grades 1-5

Laurie McLaughlinThe month has flown byas younger students remembered routines and the "ingredients" we use to make art: line, shape, color, form, texture, space and value. We've explored Matisse, Miro, Valdez, Kahlo, Cuna Indian Molas and South American Arpilleras. Fourth and fifth graders have given me a glimpse into what makes them tick through identity based art projects and have begun to participate in open art during their noon recess time. Interested fifth graders are currently taking one-on-one pottery wheel workshops with me during their open art time, which have been hugely popular! Open art is also a time for 4th & 5th grade students to finish artwork or explore a new medium or idea on their own. This week, many students are working to complete entries for the Healthy Schools Art Contest!

Exciting News!!!We have a new student teacher in art, Ayesha Johnson, coming to us from the Corcoran and here Tuesdays and Wednesdays for the entire school year! Lucky us! She has already had lots of positive interactions with our students and even begun co-teaching art lessons to classes who come to art those days. We also have Sydney Barrett, a high school student from School Without Walls, coming Tuesday and Thursday afternoons to assist with various art room tasks.

In order to avoid the volunteer burnoutwe experienced last year, we are using a different system for art volunteers. I will be soliciting volunteers only for specific projects through your parent art volunteer coordinator. Thank you for your understanding as we transition to this new system. I will attempt to give parents at least 2 weeks notice when asking for help.

Remember to check the art room blog which you can link to through the HSA website or at lafayetteartwithlaurie.blogspot.com. You'll find news and photos of art room goings on and links to area art workshops and resources.

Buy a WLES Shout Out Today!

shout out dude Have a custom message read to your child during the morning announcements. It is a great way to say "Happy Birthday", "Good Luck" or just send a fun message to your child at the beginning of the school day.

Print and fill out this form, place it and a payment of $15 (checks made out to Lafayette HSA) in the WLES Shout Out box in the Great Hall. Announcements and payment must be received at least seven days prior to the announcement date. Please contact Eden Burgess ([email protected]) for more information.
Picture Day, October 3!

Thursday, October 3 is Picture Day for all students except Kindergarteners and Mr. King's class. Kindergartners and Mr. King's class will be photographed on Thursday October 10.

Students will be photographed by Bethesda photographer Freed Photography. Both the whole class photos and individual portraits will be taken on the same day and they will be photographed OUTSIDE, using natural light. No paying for photos before you see them! You will be able to see several proofs online and you may order as many or as few photos as you like. Proofs will be available on a password-protected site, but all students photos may be viewed. If you would prefer to have your proofs emailed privately, please contact Gayle Moseley and provide your email address.

Picture Day Clothing Suggestions: solid colors and simple patterns photograph best; collared shirts or polos for boys look great; and avoid sweatshirts/sweatpants and t-shirts with large logos or letters. Some shots may show your child's entire body, so please consider this when choosing an outfit. That being said, photos can be cropped, so if you really like the smile and expression of your child on a full-body shot, you can have it cropped to just show the head and shoulders if you prefer. See flyer for additional information.

Please feel free to contact Gayle Moseley with any questions you may have.

New Community Representative Needed for the Local School Advisory Team

The Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) at Lafayette is looking for a new community representative to join our committee. As stated in the LSAT guidelines put out by DCPS, "A Local School Advisory Team (LSAT) is a group of elected and appointed members that shall exist in every DCPS school. The team consists of parents, teachers, non--instructional school staff, a community member, and in some cases students, to advise the principal on matters that promote high expectations and high achievement for all students."

The LSAT at Lafayette meets once a month at 7:45am for about an hour. The community representative would have a one year term. If you know of someone who might be interested in filling this role, please let Peaches Scribner ([email protected]) know
.

We hope to have a list of interested candidates to choose from by our next meeting on October 2nd. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Peaches for more information.

If you are (or know) a reliable, experienced driver with a clean driving record who would be interested, please contact Anne Joyce at [email protected].
