AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ABOUT THE SCHOOL BOUNDARY ISSUE
| |
For the first time in over three decades, DCPS is undertaking a review of its school boundaries and feeder patterns. Monday night, we convened a meeting to update the Lafayette community about this issue. Please find below a brief summary of the update along with a link to a letter that we will be sending to Chancellor Henderson. We hope that all members of the Lafayette community will use the link below to lend your support to our message of maintaining Lafayette's current feeder patterns. Key points include:
Reports in the community of DCPS action on school boundaries/feeder patterns prompted an initial meeting of the entire Lafayette community on December 4, 2012. From this meeting a working group of about 30 interested parents was formed comprising parents from both Wards 3 and 4 and parents of children in all grades at Lafayette.
The Lafayette working group has researched feeder patterns and gathered information about the process. Additionally, the group has met with members of the DC City Council and other D.C. officials to better understand this issue.
Based upon our review of the data, our understanding of how boundary/feeder patterns historically have been determined, and discussions with DC officials, there is evidence that Lafayette's feeder pattern likely will remain the same. However, there is still a critical need for the working group and the Lafayette community to closely monitor the process.
The working group has reached a consensus around a plan to actively monitor the process, and formulated a position and a message.
Our group recommends a measured action plan over the course of the boundary review process. This includes continued monitoring and gathering of information as the process progresses, conveying to the Chancellor our desire to maintain Lafayette's current feeder pattern, and keeping the Lafayette community updated with the most current information.
Next Steps:
We have drafted a letter to Chancellor Henderson stating our community's appreciation and support of our schools. In addition, we request that the boundary review process upholds the principles of proximity and community that have long guided DCPS enrollment rules and thus, maintain our entire community's ability to send our children to Lafayette, Deal and Wilson. We strongly encourage you to sign onto the letter and show your support for maintaining current feeder patterns for Lafayette. The letter can be viewed and signed electronically at www.sites.google.com/site/lafayetteunited/ For questions or to join the working group, please contact one of the parents below or email Jared Cohen at jareddcohen@gmail.com.
