Annual Historic Preservation Awards

Richmond City Council Chambers

440 Civic Center Plaza

Friday, May 17

5:30 pm

FREE

A distinguished group of recipients make up the class of 2013 who will be honored at Richmond's annual Historic Preservation Awards ceremony.

Front and center are Orton Development Inc. and architect Marcy Wong, who will be recognized for the rehabilitation of the former oil house at the historic Ford Point building that is now the Visitors Center for the Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park.  The project was also recently recognized by the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects and the Visitors Center is an added attraction next to the Craneway Pavilion, open daily with free admission.

Another award will be given for an oral history of Alvarado Park compiled for the East Bay Regional Park District by oral historian Susan Imboden. The park, once a favored place for outings and concerts in the first half of the 20th century, as well as home to a sanitarium and Depression-era walls built by the Works Progress Administration, is now part of Wildcat Canyon Regional Park.

Local zydeco musician Andre Thierry, a longtime favorite performer at community events and a Grammy nominee this year, will be honored for preserving Creole traditions and music in Richmond.

Lois Boyle, a familiar name for her 30 years leading the Richmond Museum of History and her dedication to bringing the historic ship SS Red Oak Victory home to the city and seeing to its restoration, will be honored for her years of service preserving local history.

Nancy Strauch and Bruce Brubaker will be recognized for their work on restoring access to Boat Ramp Street, which for decades was the lone public boat launch site in the city. It was closed and fenced off when a new boat ramp opened at Marina Bay in 1982, but Strauch and Brubaker led efforts that resulted in its reopening in 2008.

A separate award at the event is the National Park Service Home Front Award, which will go to former councilwoman Donna Powers "for establishing the Rosie the Riveter Memorial, which was a catalyst for the creation of Rosie the Riveter/World War II Home Front National Historical Park.

The ceremony will be followed by a reception an the Richmond Art Center, catered by the Contra Costa College Culinary Department.

Bay Area Storytelling Festival

Craneway Pavilion

1414 Harbour Way South
Saturday May 18

Sunday, May 19

LenCabral

Oral storytelling is an art for all ages, from the cutest kids and the hippest adults through the wisest grandparents.

The Tellers: We are pleased to announce the tellers for the 2013 Bay Area Storytelling Festival! Award- winning storyteller and NPR commentator Kevin Kling tells hilarious, often tender stories. Megan Wells seeks the story eclipse when the ordinary world gives way to the light of the imagination. When Len Cabral tells stories, coyotes turn into ducks and we travel from Ethiopia to New England cranberry bogs. Yvette Brandy weaves stories and songs, and Will Hornyak promises to captivate, surprise and intrigue.

Every year, the festival offers a school study trip, sponsored this year by a generous grant from the National Storytelling Network. This year's professional storytelling workshop is also on Friday, and features the two part harmony of Kevin Kling and Megan Wells.

Saturday and Sunday we offer several performances for adults and older kids, a family program and more workshops. In 2013, we are hosting an invitational spoken word slam for local high school students.

Three New Exhibits at NIAD

NIAD

551 23rd Street

Artist's Reception Saturday, May 18, 12:30 pm - 3:00pm

Gallery Hours Monday - Friday 10:00 am - 3:00 pm

Main Gallery: Mud, Honey

NIAD has been working in ceramics for decades. It would not be an exaggeration to say we've turned out thousands of clay objects. And, under the direction of contemporary ceramicists Jennifer Brazelton and Maria Hartikainen, we're still making really amazing works. Mud, Honey is a sweeping look at our vast and popular ceramics project: sculptures, vessels, figures, and functional wares. Included in the hundreds of pieces on view will be work from Sylvia Fragoso, Saul Alegria, Jon Fukui, Barbara Arbogast, Shantae Robinson, Karen May, Adonia Douglas, Raven Harper, Peter Harris, Luis Estrada, Aisha Ivery, Vincent Villenueva and more.

Annex Space: School Papers: Drawings From Douglas Witmer

Since 2006, Pennsylvania artist Douglas Witmer has been creating a series abstract works on vintage school grade papers given to the artist by his now-deceased father. Influenced by the Tantric drawings of India, these tablet-sized pieces are equal parts geometry, abstraction and nostalgia. Selected from more than 100 works, NIAD will be showing eight of the School Papers.

Storefront: Diamond Dog's Pet Supply

Our latest pop-up shop has everything for all of your creatures, great and small. Diamond Dog Pet Supply features dog and cat beds, sculptural pet toys, plush stuffed animals (real and imaginary), dinnerware for the domesticates, dog saddle bags and a whole lot more. Featuring work from Dorrie Reid, Alice Sampson, Dorothy Porter, Julio Del Rio, Jonathan Velasquez, Heather Hamann and others.

Backroom: Championship Vinyl

A few of our artists have been putting the needle to the groove... okay, maybe more like the brush to the record. Our gallery director digs through the nearby recycling center and brings in crates of discarded LPs. Our artists find the ones that speak to them and beginning painting on the vinyl. The results are so spectacular, that we've created a special record shop and named it after the John Cusack's store in High Fidelity.

We all agree that painting on silk is beautiful. Tomoko Murakami, who leads our works on paper classes and teaches silk painting to our artists, will lead you down the road of this vibrant art form. One of the most exciting parts of painting on silk is the opportunity to create strikingly vivid textures with color. In this introductory workshop, using basic silk painting techniques, participants will create a 14" Mandela. We promise you the results will be stunning!

Innovations in Contemporary Crafts

A Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Crafts in California

Main Gallery & West Gallery

Innovations in Contemporary Crafts explores innovations in the traditional craft mediums of ceramics, wood, glass, metal, fiber, enamel, paper and jewelry. We survey artists who are forward thinking in their approach to materials and application.

Excavating Layers

South Gallery

This exhibition of mixed-media artwork illustrates how artists excavate new and historic images and materials to reveal particular tensions between figuration and abstraction and create new layers of visual and conceptual meanings. These layers signify the multiple systems that one experiences every day - home, community, society, nature, history, the world at large and one's place within order and chaos. Artists included are Tony Berlant, Shenny Phillips Cruces, Brian Dittmer, Monika Lin, Brian Rutenberg, Robert Sagerman and Dana Hart Stone.

The 48th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show

Community Gallery

Now in its 48th year at the Richmond Art Center, the Annual West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Student Art Show is a collaborative project between WCCUSD and the Richmond Art Center. Artwork by secondary school students fills the walls with diverse visions and individual creative voices.

Steve Mainini: Working in the WCCUSD, A Retrospective

South Gallery

This retrospective offers an in-depth look at the works that artist and art teacher Steve Mainini has created while teaching art at John F. Kennedy High School over the last 8 years. During this period Mainini has experimented with different processes, mediums and themes in his work.

Volunteer
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Richmond Museum of History

Happy spring! The museum is currently undergoing many exciting changes, but because of the temporary staff shortage we need your help more than ever to accomplish our goals.

Our most critical need right now is volunteers to staff the museum during the times when it is open to the public, which is Wednesday through Sunday 1-4pm.

The need for volunteer staff is particularly critical for the days of April 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 during 1-4pm, while the paid staff attends the Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. We hope to have at least three volunteers to help open and close the museum, collect admission money, and staff the gift shop during this time. A sign up sheet for the days is available in the volunteer break room, so please sign up to help during your next visit to the museum.

The Museum is also in need of individuals to be trained as docents/gallery guides/visitor services representatives. There has been an increase in requests for tours, which is a very positive change for the museum, but we need knowledgeable volunteers to depend on to provide tours.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at 510-235-7387 if you have questions or are interested in helping out. Feel free to share this note widely.

Many thanks for supporting your community museum,

Melinda McCrary

Curator/Museum Manager
