Spotlight on Lodging
The Annex Corporate Cottage

214 Washington Avenue
(510 235-0081 40Flagsbed
website

As travelers ourselves, we noted our favorite ideas at the accommodations where we stayed. When we built and outfitted "The Annex," we included those ideas. Pairing them with guest suggestions results in a cozy and convenient home away from home like no other. The furnished cottage is in historic downtown Point Richmond and is set back from the street with a native plant garden between it and the sidewalk. Sit in the afternoon on the patio in the shade of the oak tree or on the porch in the sun. Enter and there are skylights, tile floors and high ceilings. There is a computer alcove with high speed internet.

When you stay here, you have the opportunity to be "green." All the appliances are energy efficient. There are reminders to save water and energy. And you can recycle and compost with the local sanitation company.

Additional amenities:
king size bed with Tempur-pedic mattress
full size sofa bed in l.r. for that extra person
porch and patio
all utilities included

It is CHBO Complete except as per the following:
dining table with two matching chairs
place setting for four
TV in bedroom
no dishwasher or garbage disposal
no icemaker or mixer

BillEvans

Tracing the banjo from its West African roots to the New World, Evans performs musical examples from the 1700's to the present day on a variety of vintage instruments, explaining how the banjo has been at the intersection of African- and Anglo-American musical and cultural exchange for over 250 years. From an 18th century African dance tune to the music of the Civil War, and from early 20th century ragtime to folk and bluegrass banjo styles, The Banjo in America informs while it entertains, exposing audiences to over 200 years of American music.

You can learn more about Bill by visiting www.billevansbanjo.com. Watch video performances from The Banjo in America by linking to Bill's YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/BillEvansBanjo or link to Fretboard Journal magazine's Vimeo video "Bill Evans Tells The History of the Banjo in 14 Minutes:" http://vimeo.com/52518992?action=share&post_id=1530885046_280816668704131#_%3D

The Point Richmond Acoustic Music series is completely non-religious and people of all faiths as well as no faith are welcome. It's a friendly no-pressure environment, and even if it's been a few decades since you have set foot in a church, no one is going to bite you. But they might offer you a cookie or cup of coffee. It's all about the music here.

Innovations in Contemporary Crafts

A Juried Exhibition of Contemporary Crafts in California

Main Gallery & West Gallery

Innovations in Contemporary Crafts explores innovations in the traditional craft mediums of ceramics, wood, glass, metal, fiber, enamel, paper and jewelry. We survey artists who are forward thinking in their approach to materials and application.

Excavating Layers

South Gallery

This exhibition of mixed-media artwork illustrates how artists excavate new and historic images and materials to reveal particular tensions between figuration and abstraction and create new layers of visual and conceptual meanings. These layers signify the multiple systems that one experiences every day - home, community, society, nature, history, the world at large and one's place within order and chaos. Artists included are Tony Berlant, Shenny Phillips Cruces, Brian Dittmer, Monika Lin, Brian Rutenberg, Robert Sagerman and Dana Hart Stone.

The 48th Annual WCCUSD Student Art Show

Community Gallery

Now in its 48th year at the Richmond Art Center, the Annual West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) Student Art Show is a collaborative project between WCCUSD and the Richmond Art Center. Artwork by secondary school students fills the walls with diverse visions and individual creative voices.

Steve Mainini: Working in the WCCUSD, A Retrospective

South Gallery

This retrospective offers an in-depth look at the works that artist and art teacher Steve Mainini has created while teaching art at John F. Kennedy High School over the last 8 years. During this period Mainini has experimented with different processes, mediums and themes in his work.

Arguably Brecht's greatest play, The Life of Galileo beautifully captures a brilliant discovery that changed the world. Armed with a telescope and a questioning mind, Galileo incites a war between reason and faith that challenges his own integrity. In a translation by English playwright David Hare, this play is a spellbinding lesson in the consequences of genius.

Volunteer
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Richmond Museum of History

Happy spring! The museum is currently undergoing many exciting changes, but because of the temporary staff shortage we need your help more than ever to accomplish our goals.

Our most critical need right now is volunteers to staff the museum during the times when it is open to the public, which is Wednesday through Sunday 1-4pm.

The need for volunteer staff is particularly critical for the days of April 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 during 1-4pm, while the paid staff attends the Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. We hope to have at least three volunteers to help open and close the museum, collect admission money, and staff the gift shop during this time. A sign up sheet for the days is available in the volunteer break room, so please sign up to help during your next visit to the museum.

The Museum is also in need of individuals to be trained as docents/gallery guides/visitor services representatives. There has been an increase in requests for tours, which is a very positive change for the museum, but we need knowledgeable volunteers to depend on to provide tours.

Please do not hesitate to contact me at 510-235-7387 if you have questions or are interested in helping out. Feel free to share this note widely.

Many thanks for supporting your community museum,

Melinda McCrary

"8th Annual Cinco de Mayo Peace and Unity Parade"

The popular family oriented, multi-cultural event of the year will take place on Saturday May 4, 2013, from 10am-12pm. The two-mile parade, sponsored by the Cities of Richmond and San Pablo, celebrating Peace and Unity, will start at 24th Street and Barrett Avenue in Richmond, and continue up 23rd Street, turn right on Market Street to Church Lane and reach its destination at St. Paul's Church Cinco de Mayo Festival in San Pablo.

The participants and spectators from all the over the Bay Area will proudly represent their Mexican heritage along with other cultures and heritages. The Parade will include more than five floats with live traditional Mariachi and Banda music, as well as the blasting sounds from DJ Sonido Eclipse. The parade grows every year, and is expected to have over 1500 participants this year, including many children from local schools, soccer teams, as well as civic groups, other youth groups, and classic and low rider cars. The end of the Parade will feature the popular Dancing Horses, dancing to banda and tamborazo music.

The Grand Marshalls this year will be Joe Gomes, former 30 year San Pablo City Council member, and Betty Reid-Soskin, former Rosie-the Riveter worker during the Kaiser Shipyards in Richmond and currently a representative of the National Park Service. The Cinco de Mayo Parade, with the theme " Peace and Unity, Paz y Unidad" was organized after the Cities of Richmond and San Pablo had experienced street violence while celebrating Cinco de Mayo for a number of years. As a result, support from both Cities, and the Latino community, the violence stopped and the celebrations have been taking place free of violence since that time.

Thank you in advance for your prompt and positive response.
