La Cosecha, The Harvest
Thursday, March 7, 2013 6:00pm - 8:00pm FREE For location information, contact Doria Robinson, Join us for an evening of food, film and deep conversation in Richmond as we start our Film Series.
Synopsis Every year there are more than 400,000 American children who are torn away from their friends, schools and homes to pick the food we all eat. Zulema, Perla and Victor labor as migrant farm workers, sacrificing their own childhoods to help their families survive. THE HARVEST/LA COSECHA profiles these three as they journey from the scorching heat of Texas' onion fields to the winter snows of the Michigan apple orchards and back south to the humidity of Florida's tomato fields to follow the harvest. From the Producers of the Academy-Award® Nominated film, WAR/DANCE and Executive Producer Eva Longoria, this award-winning documentary provides an intimate glimpse into the lives of these children who struggle to dream while working 12 - 14 hours a day, 7 days a week to feed America. This event is a project of the Richmond Food Policy Council. Working to create a health and justice food system for Richmond and beyond. |

Laurie Lewis is recognized as one of the premiere bluegrass musicians in the world. She has distinguished herself as an accomplished singer, songwriter, fiddler, guitarist, bass player and bandleader. Known around the globe, Lewis won a Grammy in 1997 for True Life Blues: The Songs of Bill Monroe, and has twice been named as Female Vocalist of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association. Her most recent CD is Skipping and Flying, a tribute to Bill Monroe featuring songs from the bluegrass great as well as her own original songs. The Right Hands, Lewis's ace band - Tom Rozum, Chad Manning, Patrick Sauber and Sharon Gilchrist - are all bluegrass heavyweights in their own right. Point Richmond Acoustic co-producer Bruce Kaplan says "Laurie told us that she started out way back when playing with bands in the bars of Point Richmond. Happily, she's graduated to the church! What a treat to have Laurie here, close up and personal with her whole band. We are really lucky to have such great musicians to play for us." The opening act, American Nomad, is an acoustic duo comprised of Hassan El-Tayyab and Shiloh Parkerson, two singer/songwriters who are rooted in Americana and folk/swing traditions. Smart songwriting, catchy lyrics, tight rhythms, rich harmonies, and strong musicianship have already earned American Nomad a well-deserved reputation as an up and coming band that you "Just gotta see!".

Richmond Museum of History Happy spring! The museum is currently undergoing many exciting changes, but because of the temporary staff shortage we need your help more than ever to accomplish our goals. Our most critical need right now is volunteers to staff the museum during the times when it is open to the public, which is Wednesday through Sunday 1-4pm. The need for volunteer staff is particularly critical for the days of April 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 during 1-4pm, while the paid staff attends the Annual Meeting of the Society for American Archaeology. We hope to have at least three volunteers to help open and close the museum, collect admission money, and staff the gift shop during this time. A sign up sheet for the days is available in the volunteer break room, so please sign up to help during your next visit to the museum. The Museum is also in need of individuals to be trained as docents/gallery guides/visitor services representatives. There has been an increase in requests for tours, which is a very positive change for the museum, but we need knowledgeable volunteers to depend on to provide tours. Please do not hesitate to contact me at 510-235-7387 if you have questions or are interested in helping out. Feel free to share this note widely. Many thanks for supporting your community museum, Melinda McCrary Curator/Museum Manager
