Not a Christmas Carol

  Not a Christmas Carol

McCarty, who has taught at the college for over a decade, is a prolific playwright. Her most recent noted works have included "RIVETS!," which enjoyed several runs aboard the SS Red Oak Victory in the Rosie the Riveter National Park in Richmond, and "The Ladies Quintet," which played in Chicago and Los Angeles theaters.

McCarty sees "(Not) A Christmas Carol" as unlike most other theatrical adaptations of the holiday favorite. "I've integrated a lot of comedy in modernizing the story," she said. Adapting the classic was no easy task said McCarty, explaining that she wanted to create a comedy that was easily accessible to audiences, and that still held true to the story and meaning of what Dickens wrote.

"I kept wondering, how would Dickens incorporate world events if he were writing his story in 2012?"

"No other author has more of an influence than Charles Dickens on how we celebrate Christmas," said McCarty. "He used the holiday to examine society as a whole. The amazing thing is that we are still battling the issues of poverty and greed that Dickens wrote about nearly 200 years ago."

National Park Service Debuts New Film, "The War At Home"

A new documentary film called "The War At Home" will debut at the Rosie the Riveter/WWII Home Front National Historical Park on Saturday, December 8th and Sunday, December 9th, 2012. The 25-minute film will screen hourly at the park's Visitor Education Center, starting at 11 AM. The last screening will begin at 4 PM.

"The War At Home," produced in collaboration between the National Park Service and Signature Communications, uses oral histories, archival materials and personal diaries to illustrate the diversity and complexity of the WWII home front experience, from the perspective of a number of real people who lived in different cities across the United States.

After the weekend-long debut, visitors will be able to see "The War At Home" throughout the day on a regular basis 7 days a week at the Visitor Education Center. Another 16-minute documentary film, "Home Front Heroes," which outlines the history of defense manufacturing in Richmond, CA during WWII, is also screened regularly, alternating with "The War At Home."

3 Time Grammy Nominee Peter Case at Pt. Richmond Acoustic

First Methodist Church

201 Martina Avenue

Friday, December 14th

8:00 pm

Tickets $18 at the door

Case's work over the past three and a half decades sets the bar for authenticity, passion and imagination and spans a number of genres. Raised in Buffalo, NY, Case came to the Bay area in 1973 and worked as a street musician and played in the seminal power pop The Nerves, before moving to Los Angeles to form the Plimsouls, landing a deal with Geffen Records.

The band achieved success with the single, "Million Miles Away,"  but broke up shortly after. Case's 1986 solo Geffen record revealed deep roots in folk and blues, and earned him his first Grammy nomination for the song "Old Blue Car" as well as the number one spot on the NY Time's 1986 Best CDs list. Six CDs later, Case earned another nomination for "Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John," a remarkable collection of songs that features Case's voice and a single guitar. It's clear that Case is a major talent on the Americana troubadour landscape, sharing a vision for modern folk with songwriters such as Dave Alvin, Steve Earle, Tom Russell and Mary Gauthier.

Opening artist Ernest Troost is an Emmy-award-winning film and television composer and a recipient of the Kerrville New Folk award for his songwriting. His evocative style combines folk and Piedmont-blues-style guitar picking with timeless stories and colorful character portrayals drawn from the American past and present. His talent, both as a guitarist and a lyricist, is extraordinary.
