Adam Levy is a literate and lyrical songwriter and accomplished guitar player who has toured as a member of both Norah Jones for the better part of a decade, and recorded with dozens of other artists including Tracy Chapman. He has released several solo albums, The Heart Collector being his latest.  He's equally adept performing alongside avant-garde jazz figures as he is with mainstream artists. His musical influences come from guitarists Bill Frisell, George Harrison, Jeff Beck, Les Paul, John Scofield, Steve Cropper, and Ted Greene, though one of his biggest musical heroes was George Wyle - his piano-playing grandfather. Adam is also a music instructor, a music journalist, and a touring artist. His writings regularly appear in Acoustic Guitar, Guitar Player, and other publications.

Mark Lemaire and Twilight (Cindy van Empel) will open the show.  Mark Lemaire's music is both ethereal and deeply grounded. Berkeley songwriter Carol Denney says that "To call him a remarkable player would be a considerable understatement - just about nobody I know is doing what Mark can do on the guitar." He's shared the stage with Tracy Chapman, Maria Muldaur, and bass virtuoso Michael Manring.

Historian Steve Gilford to Present Talk on the Fate of the SSStephen Hopkins: Richmond-Built Cargo Ship Sunk a German Raider During WWII

Rosie the Riveter Visitor Center

1414 Harbour Way South Suite 3000

Sunday, November 11th

2:00 pm

In honor of Veteran's Day, the National Park Service will sponsor a lecture on a little-known battle involving a Richmond-built merchant ship and a German surface vessel during WWII. This year is the seventieth anniversary of this nearly forgotten, but thrilling story of courage, and the determination to survive.

Historian Steve Gilford will present the story of how the bravery of the sailors on a Richmond merchant ship, the SS Stephen Hopkins, crossing the South Atlantic on her maiden voyage, was attacked by a German Navy raider, the Stier, on September 27, 1942. Although outmanned and outgunned, and with far less combat experience, the crew of the Hopkins managed to sink the German ship, in the only naval victory of its kind during WWII.

Steve Gilford is a historian, writer and award-winning network television journalist. As senior historical consultant at the Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, he has spent more than 25 years doing original research and writing about the development of the Kaiser Permanente Medical Program, as well as the career and impact of industrialist and shipbuilder Henry Kaiser. He was history consultant to the landmark 2004 exhibit, "Think Big: Henry J. Kaiser" at the Oakland Museum of California, and supplied many items from his personal collection. He is on the Board of the Richmond Museum of History and the SS Red Oak Victory. His most recent book, Build 'Em by the Mile, Cut 'Em Off by the Yard: How Henry Kaiser and the Rosies Helped Win WWII, was published in 2011.
