New Strategic Plan Focuses on Academic Excellence 

After a year of collaboration among employees, students, parents and community members, Robbinsdale Area Schools has a new strategic plan. The School Board approved the new plan this month, which is designed to increase the academic achievement of all students. "One of my greatest joys as an educator is to see students learning, growing and achieving," said Superintendent Aldo Sicoli. "There is no work more inspiring than ensuring our students have the skills they need to live successful lives." Click here to read more from Superintendent Sicoli.

Armstrong Symphonic Band Performs at Carnegie Hall
The Armstrong Symphonic Band traveled to New York City over spring break last week to perform at Carnegie Hall. The band had a clinic with a Carnegie Hall conductor and performed a concert on Monday, March 24, followed by a post concert harbor cruise reception. "It was an honor to represent the Robbinsdale School District in New York City," said band director Todd Burkholder.
 
Highview Students Successful at MAAP Tournament
Twelve Highview students participated in the regional MAAP tournament earlier this month and received high rankings:
  • Chakira Edwards-Public Speaking, 1st place
  • Michael Nyaundi-Job Interview, 1st place
  • Tatyana Engstrom- Job Interview, 2nd place
  • Carlos Washington, Nate Lomax, Michael Nyaundi, Rachel Johnson-Lifesmarts team, 1st place.
  • Nate Lomax, Pierre Tay, Chakira Edwards, Rachel Johnson-Team Management, 1st place
  • Carlos Washington, Nia Black, Tatyana Engstrom, Gabby Morales-Team Management, 3rd place. 
Armstrong Speech Team Performs Well at Section Tournament 
Congratulations to the Armstrong Speech Team for their outstanding performance at the MSHSL Section 6AA tournament. Robbinsdale Armstrong Senior Andrew Urevig, Juniors Hannah Cowan and Courtney Nelson and Freshman Abigail Stoesz all qualified to the final round of competition.  Andrew, competing in International Extemporaneous speaking won the Section 3AA tournament. Hannah and Courtney, competing in Duo Interpretation and Abigail in Storytelling finished in the top 8 of competition but missed qualifying to the state tournament. Andrew's championship performance allows him to compete at the MSHSL State Speech Tournament on April 11 at Blaine High School.  This is the fourth year in a row Andrew has qualified to the State Speech Tournament. The Section 3AA tournament was hosted at Eden Prairie High School with over 600 students from 16 schools in the west metro.

Robins PI Adapted Floor Hockey Team Wins State Tournament
 
Earlier this month, the Robins PI Adapted Floor Hockey Team won the state tournament and made history by being the first floor hockey team in state history to earn a 4-peat. The Robins  displayed grit and determination when they knocked off their biggest rivals in the state. Joe Dubisar scored 13 goals giving him a total of 51 goals for the season, a new team record. Joe, along with Jeremy Jost and Tyler Sarff, were named to the all-tournament team. Congratulations to our Robins team!
 
Armstrong Junior Selected for Prestigious Leadership Camp
Armstrong business student and junior Calvin Weimerskirch is headed to New York City this summer to participate in a prestigious summer leadership camp at Mercy College. Last year, the college interviewed over 2,000 candidates from over 30 states to select 200 to attend. At the Academy, students visit many Fortune 500 companies, including Goldman Sachs, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Young & Rubicam, J. Walter Thompson, Bloomberg, and MTV, among others. Click here to learn more about the program.

Jackie Fraedrich Passes Away

Long-time American Indian educator Jackie Fraedrich passed away on March 19. Jackie worked in Robbinsdale Area Schools between 1979 and 2008 as Director of Indian Education, Multicultural Education Director and Program Director for Student Services. Jackie led her team of American Indian educators to Minnesota reservations to learn what should be taught in schools. Her work led to reforms in how Minnesota schools teach Indian history and culture. Civil Rights Research Tour

The first trailer for the upcoming student movie "FreeDumb" is out! "FreeDumb" chronicles the experience of 24 students and staff who participated in the 2014 Robbinsdale Area Schools Kenneth Turner Civil Rights Research Tour. The tour is an experiential learning experience to deepen student understanding of the Civil Rights Movement. Click here to watch the video.
