Senator Franken Visits Meadow Lake Elementary
U.S. Senator Al Franken stopped by Meadow Lake Elementary on Monday for a special visit and announcement. Sen. Franken ate lunch with kindergarten students and then held a press conference announcing his new legislation. The bill would provide funding for free meals to students who receive reduced-price meals. Thank you for thinking of not only the students of Meadow Lake and Minnesota but of the whole country!
 
District Spelling Bee Held on March 15
Community Education of Robbinsdale Area Schools held its annual District Spelling Bee on March 15. Maheen Rahmatullah (RSI) took home first place for second grade and Owen Larson (SEA) was the runner-up. Thao Dang (ZLE) received first place for third grade and Ben Hathaway-Wrestling (SEA) was the runner-up. Noah Peterson (SEA) was the first place winner for fourth grade and Harshita Somani (RSI) was named the runner-up. Mio Aoki Sherwood (RSI) received first place for fifth grade and Shawn Chishala (RSI) was the runner-up. Congratulations to all who participated and thanks for all the help that you gave to this year's Spelling Bee.  It was a fun event.

Armstrong Senior is a National Merit Scholar Finalist

Armstrong High School Senior Sara Wixon was named a National Merit Scholar Finalist. Sara's rigorous coursework during her time at Armstrong, including taking almost a dozen Advanced Placement courses, helped her prepare for the PSAT. "The coursework at Armstrong has been very challenging," Sara said. "My teachers have been really great about working with me individually, and I know I'm going to miss that next year in college." Robbinsdale Debate and Speech Teams Take Top Honors
Congratulations to Cooper Senior Olivia Heusinkveld and Junior Seth Thompson for qualifying in Public-Forum debate and Armstrong Senior Andrew Urevig for qualifying in International Extemporaneous Speaking. The National Debate and Speech tournament will feature over 2,000 students from around the country competing in nine different events to be crowned the national champion. This is the second time Olivia and Andrew qualified to the tournament. Andrew was also named the Southern Minnesota National Forensics League Student of the Year. This award is presented to one student in each district who characterizes the very traits of humility, integrity, leadership, respect and service touted by the NFL Code of Honor.  At the national tournament, a Student of the Year for 2014 will be named from all district recipients.  Robbinsdale attended the National Debate and Speech Tournament in 2013 and finished in 3rd place in Lincoln-Douglas Debate and Robbinsdale Cooper was named as a School of Honor for debate. The National Debate and Speech Tournament will be held in Overland Park, KS, June 15-20. Robins PI Adapted Floor Hockey Team Wins State Tournament
This weekend, the Robins became the first floor hockey team in state history to earn a 4-peat. They defeated South Minneapolis 10-0 on Friday night, dominated Rochester 12-3  Saturday  morning, and then knocked off their biggest rival, Dakota United, 8-3 to take home the championship trophy. "All three games were total team efforts, as the team seemed to hit their playing peak at just the right time," said coach Marcus Onsum. Tyler Sarff and Jeremy Jost were named to the all-tournament team. Congratulations to all members of the Robins!

Education Assistant of the Year Finalists Named
This year's Education Assistant of the Year finalists in Robbinsdale Area Schools were selected this week. The finalists are Judy Anderson, early childhood special education assistant at New Hope Learning Center;  Laura Martin, media assistant at Sonnesyn Elementary; Cheryl Ekberg, Title 1 assistant at Forest Elementary; and Sandra Lindstrom, job coach at the Robbinsdale Transition Center. "Education Assistants
are vital to the learning that occurs in our classrooms," said Peter Eckhoff, President of the Robbinsdale Federation of Teachers. Click here to read more.
 
School Board Approves New Strategic Plan
The School Board of Robbinsdale Area Schools approved a new strategic plan designed to increase the academic achievement of all students. The plan, which is called "Unified District Vision: High Intellectual Performance Through Equity," was developed after a year of collaboration among employees, students, families, and community members.
