Robbinsdale Area Schools Celebrate Volunteers with Banquet
Logging over 27,000 hours for the 2012-2013 school year, community volunteers in Robbinsdale Area Schools are an invaluable resource, so treating them like the VIPs they are is one way to thank them.
Nearly 600 Volunteers In Partnership (VIP) volunteers, district staff, and VIP partners were invited to the VIP appreciation breakfast on May 2 at New Hope Church. The keynote speaker this year was Diane Sims Page, executive director of the Page Education Foundation and wife of Minnesota Supreme Court Justice and NFL Hall of Fame player Alan Page. The Page Education Foundation provides college scholarships to students of color, with a condition of receiving the scholarship a commitment to fifty hours yearly as tutors and mentors to young children.
VIP links community members with volunteer opportunities by recruiting, training, and placing volunteers in service to learners, pre-K through adult. Volunteers tutor students in core curricular areas, assisting with classroom activities, providing vision and hearing screening, helping at school events, and assisting with literacy skill development. For other photos from the event, check out our Facebook album.
Peer Leaders at Cooper Mentor RMS Students Last fall, 25 Cooper students were trained as peer leadership coaches through a collaborative partnership between Cooper, RMS, Robbinsdale Community Education and the Gary S. Stevens Foundation. Peer leaders volunteered to coach RMS students in their after school homework help program on Tuesdays. Cooper coaches worked with the students to set goals, identify their dreams and check-in with students weekly from November through April. Ms. Heidi Palms, a Cooper teacher, led the program as the first ever Cooper Coaching Club Advisor. "I have seen positive shifts in both sets of students from Cooper and RMS gaining confidence and increase their grades," said Toni Hults, Program Specialist with Community Ed. "I am hoping to continue to offer staff trainings and bring programming to Armstrong and Plymouth Middle school in co-active coaching."
