High Schools Excel at Students in Action Competition
Congratulations to the Students in Action teams at both Cooper and Armstrong High Schools, who earned a gold medal and bronze medal, respectively, at the state Jefferson Awards Students in Action competition last weekend. Cooper ranked in the top three, earning them a gold medal for the first time, and Armstrong earned a bronze medal in only their first competition, as the program was implemented at Armstrong for the first time this year.

Destination ImagiNation Teams Move on to Global Competition The Neill Ostriches and Lakeview's Dangerous Pie Destination ImagiNation (DI) teams are both headed to the DI Global Tournament! Neill's coach Ken Strand and Lakeview's coach Barry Thorvilson will bring their students to Knoxville, Tenn. in May. "I think the kids did a wonderful job interpreting a very challenging problem," Strand said. "They needed to do a lot of research into wind energy, and also design a piece of kinetic art. I am really proud of their hard work."

Granite Woods Event Superintendent Sicoli joined Principals Dahl (Armstrong) and Beidelman (Plymouth Middle School), Instructional Assistant Nicole Norlander (Sonnesyn Elementary) and other staff members and students for a successful informational meeting at the Granite Woods apartment complex last week. This apartment complex serves Sonnesyn, Plymouth Middle School and Armstrong.

P.A.W.S. Reading at Zachary Lane
Last week, Zachary Lane Elementary (ZLE) hosted its second annual Paws to R.E.A.D. event to celebrate World Book Night. Over 125 people were in attendance with over 60 children who R.E.A.D. with dogs and rabbits. Children read one-on-one with trained therapy animals. ZLE gave away 80 books to parents and 74 books to children.
SEA Receives Box Tops Hero Award The School of Engineering and Arts (SEA) was selected as a winner in the Box Tops Hero Video Contest. Shortly before winter break, students entered SEA parent Stephanie Smith in the contest. After submitting the video in February, they were notified in March that they received the Grand Prize of 10,000 box tops! This adds $1,000 to the $4,000 previously collected. Congratulations, SEA!
Armstrong AVID Students Visit Cargill AVID sophomores from Armstrong High School attended Cargill Career Day on April 16. Lakeview Receives Exxon Mobil Grant For the second year in a row, Lakeview Elementary received the ExxonMobil Educational Alliance Math and Science Grant. Lakeview's principal Nichole Rens said she plans to use the $500 grant to help start raised bed gardens that students will be planting next spring. During the next year, students and staff will help design and plan for the gardens. Enjoy the fun projects ahead, Lakeview! Armstrong Student Named National Merit Scholar
Allison Domingues, a senior at Armstrong High School, was named a National Merit Scholar. Ranked first in her class with eleven Advanced Placement classes under her belt, Allison was recently named the Minnesota State high School League Region 6AA Triple A recipient. Allison lettered in three sports and was captain of two of them. Additionally, she is an accomplished musician in band, orchestra and marching band and was named to All State Band and All State Orchestra.

Teacher Awarded Grant to Study at Concentration Camp
 District Focus teacher Susan Beaubaire was one of seven U.S. teachers to receive a grant to attend the Rafael Schachter Institute for the Arts and Humanities in Prague, and the Terezin (Theresienstadt) concentration camp in the Czech Republic this summer. This institute is made possible through the Defiant Requiem Foundation that honors the legacy of Nazi prisoners in Terezin who found hope in arts and humanities in the midst of suffering and death. The goal of the institute is to share the education obtained from attending with the community regarding human rights, Holocaust education, and genocide prevention.
