Spotlight on Victoria Arabamos

PMS Education Assistant Named MN Education Support Professional for 2013

 Victoria Arabanos

Victoria Arabanos, our 2012 district EA of the Year, has been named the Education Support Professional of the Year by Education Minnesota for 2013.  Victoria is a Behavior Support supervisor at Plymouth Middle School supervising in-school suspension (ISS) for over ten years.  She also regularly stays after school to tutor struggling students, has volunteered as an assistant coach for the STEP dance team, and also volunteers her time for cheerleading, theatre arts and, currently, rugby.

Ms. Arabanos, with past experience serving in the military, brings a strong example of leadership, confidence, discipline and charcter to her students.  "Over the years, I have learned the most important technique of all is the ability to listen and read between the lines, so to speak, when working with students," stated Arabanos, who understands the challenges of raising children in today's society.  She wants to help them persevere through difficult times.   Read more about Victoria.
Celebrating Veteran's Day
Operation Candy Drop in Honor of Veterans Day

During the 1948-49 Berlin Airlift, Colonel Gail Halvorson, a now retired career officer and command pilot in the United States Air Force, would drop candy from his plane to the children in Berlin, Germany.  In order for the children to identify which plane was his, Halvorson told them he would wiggle the wings of his plane to identify himself, which led to his nickname "Onkel Wackelflügel" ("Uncle Wiggly Wings").

Inspired by this hero and in honor of Veterans Day Mr. Vestal's 2nd grade students at Northport Elementary used science to come up with their very own designs for "parachuting" candy in Operation Candy Drop.  By working with a partner, they simulated the teamwork that veterans use while in the military!  Mr. Vestal and Principal Derden then tested their hypothesis by dropping the candy from the roof of Northport.  The students watched and cheered as each parachute was dropped.  Afterward the kids heard the story of Mercedes and the Chocolate Pilot to learn more about this wartime hero. What a great example of integrating history, science, and literature in one lesson.

American Education Week

November 11-17 has been proclaimed American Education Week, and the proclamation was signed by President Obama on November 9.  Great public schools are a basic right and our responsibility.  It's a great time to think of dedicated teachers we've had in our lives and what education means to us as families and communities. STEM Training at Noble Elementary

On Thursday, November 8, all staff at Noble Elementary took part in a three-hour after school STEM training with the Jeffers Foundation.  The outdoors became their classroom as staff learned how to implement science notebooks with their students. Each teacher was given a science notebook and a kit of science tools for each of their students in their classroom.  Staff brought lesson ideas and/or their grade level curricula with them to focus on state standards.

Then, on November 9, third graders at Noble elementary used tools and pumpkins to make predictions, measure, weigh, compare and graph, using science notebooks.  From learning... to learning!
