Pumpkins Dropped from the SEA Roof
For weeks the students at the School of Engineering and Arts (SEA) planned contraptions to secure their pumpkins in as they were pitched off the roof of the school on Wed., October 31. It's all about engineering design as the pumpkins were swaddled in cotton, marshmallows, and even balloons. The "Great" Pumpkin was roof top to drop the boxes. The score of the afternoon pumpkin drop: pumpkins 18, contraptions 0. But that's okay, students are already thinking about next year!

The college visit to MSUM engaged and enriched our 6th-12th grade students' lives through interacting with college students that share the same racial identity, urban school experience, and commitment to advancing their educational career after graduating from high school. The group toured the campus and participated in a panel discussion. Co-led by Cultural Liaisons Kevin Wilson (RMS), LeVarn Shelby (CHS), and Derek Fisher (AMS), the group is designed to empower young men, and build upon their academic development, social development, and racial identity development. The program educates our students about the importance of post-secondary education. The college visit was an opportunity for the young men to be empowered to continue their education beyond high school and to become productive citizens in this global world. The purpose of JOM is to provide supplementary financial assistance to meet the unique and specialized educational needs of American Indian children. These supplementary funds are not to take the place of federal, state and local funds. Supplemental programs and activities may include academic support, teacher support and educational support items. Funds may be used for student academic tutoring, preschool programs, summer school classes, cultural enrichment, field trips, transportation, medical examinations and school supplies. This important development will benefit the over 300 American Indian students we have within the district. ____________________________________________________________ Energy in Our Schools When we look at how our schools use energy, we begin to understand why our district has been asked to make a conscious effort to conserve it through our participation in the Schools for Energy Efficiency® (SEE) program. Typically, schools use mostly natural gas and electricity as energy sources. The majority of energy use in schools is for space heating, with lighting and water in a near tie for second place. The remainder of energy use is for space cooling, ventilation, cooking, refrigeration, and office equipment or electronics. Natural gas and fuel oil are used to keep students and staff comfortable in the winter and for heating water in kitchen sinks and dishwashers, bathrooms and locker room showers. Electricity is used to mainly to power lighting throughout a school building from the small lights on the marquee sign outside to the large high-intensity lighting systems of a gymnasium or auditorium. Where water is used is more obvious - drinking fountains, bathrooms, for cleaning and irrigation - because it's the only form of energy we can actually see. Read more about how schools use energy.

Adult Academic Program Holds Practice Election for Students

The week before the real election, over 250 students in the Robbinsdale Adult Academic Program (AAP) got a chance to learn about the election process and to practice voting in a mock election. Students checked in at registration desks and voted in private voting booths that were made from cardboard boxes. "Election officials" were students that each class had voted to represent their class. A sample ballot was created from one available on the State of Minnesota website, so students could get a realistic voting experience.
The AAP helps a variety of native and foreign born students improve their basic reading, writing and math skills. "This was great!" said one AAP student. "In my home country, people don't always get the opportunity to vote, so getting a chance to see how things work gets me excited to be able to vote here someday when I become a citizen."
