Spotlight on Volunteers

Volunteerism Growing in Robbinsdale Area Schools

Student success comes, in part, from positive adult relationships.  Our thriving Volunteers in Partnership Program (VIP) helps to create and foster such relationships. VIP, which links community members with schools and programs within the district, announced the 2011-2012 statistics that reflect the total number of volunteers and service hours contributed by volunteers.  From ongoing, weekly commitments, helping at one-time special events, and conducting vision and hearing screenings, 758 VIP volunteers provided 27,436 service hours in support of the district's schools and programs.  These numbers represent a 36% increase in the number of volunteers and a 13% increase in the number of service hours over the previous year which translates to an in-kind contribution of $593,166 to our district.  Read more about our VIPs!

varsity football game on Tuesday, October 23.  Solt, a former defensive end on the Cooper varsity team, joined the army shortly after graduation.  He was deployed to Afghanistan in February 2010 with the 42nd Clearance Company, 54th Engineering Battalion, 18th Engineering Brigade. Solt operated a gunner's station on an RG 31, a seven ton four-by-four mine-protected armored personnel vehicle.  On May 1, 2012, while on the lookout for IEDs, the vehicle he and his crew were in was hit by a homemade bomb.  Solt lost both of his legs below the knee.  He has undergone many surgeries and has since been fitted with prosthetic legs.  Home for a month to visit family, Solt will return to Washington D.C. to continue with physical therapy.  A fund has been set up at Wiggle Your Toes Foundation to support Solt and his family as he continues to recover.
