How Health Coverage Providers Can Prepare for ACA Reports Due in 2016

by Rick Krueger, CliftonLarsonAllen

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) requires that employers, insurers, and health care exchanges report certain information to the Internal Revenue Serce (IRS) in early 2016. Health coverage providers, including certain employers, will file information returns with the IRS and furnish statements to individuals in 2016 to report group health coverage information for calendar year 2015. Reporting is optional for calendar year 2014.

The IRS requires reporting to determine whether employees have been offered affordable, minimum essential coverage, and whether the employer is subject to shared responsibility payments under the Internal Revenue Code. Continue reading here.

Missing the Mark on Mental Illness

jfs seattle

During the past few years I have made an effort to reconnect with former students and old friends. Many common themes arose over the course of these conversations, including a topic rarely discussed in public Jewish spaces.

I have lost track of the number of times I've sat down with a friend, a former student, or a parent of a former student, and heard about their struggles with mental illness - either their own illness or the illness of a loved one. No age is exempt, from children in grade school to grandparents. Continue reading Beth's blog here

The Voice and Vision for Stronger Communities
D'Var Torah

Lee I. Sherman
President/CEO

Last Friday, October 9, was a difficult day. Shortly after I came into the office, I received the news that Bert Goldberg had died earlier in the morning. Bert had been the CEO of AJFCA from 1986-2008, a time of dramatic growth for this organization, both in numbers and in visibility.  Prior to his leadership of AJFCA, Bert had been the executive director of the JFS in Orange County, CA, and the founding executive director of the JFS in Allentown, PA. Along with some stops at a few JCC's across the country, Bert had been a Jewish communal worker throughout his professional life. More recently he was teaching and directing a leadership program in the School of Social Work at Rutgers University. Bert received many honors and awards during his career, but his greatest mark was on the people he mentored and advised along the way.

As the news of Bert's death spread, I received many calls and emails from people who had known him during his leadership of AJFCA. Along with the shock at his untimely passing, there was an expression of gratitude for the work he had done to further the work of Jewish social service agencies throughout the United States and Canada. Bert often worked behind the scenes, but he was a strong guiding presence.

In this week's Torah reading, we read the story of Noach and the Flood, but in the context of the generations that preceded and followed his life. It is a story of strength in response to crisis and of the continuity of community. Even in the face of the ills of society or natural disaster, we find the resilience to keep moving forward. Bert Goldberg exemplified this in his life and work. May his memory be for a blessing.

Shabbat Shalom.

September a Record-Setting Month for Donations for Refugee Crisis chronicile of philanthropy
September was a record-setting month for charitable donations in response to the Syrian refugee crisis, according to officials at several aid organizations, the result of heavy media coverage. Still, the scale of the Syrian conflict and others, which have created a record 60-million displaced persons worldwide, coupled with years of donor silence, means resources are insufficient. BOARD RESOURCES
Why Boards Are Integral to Success of the Nonprofit Sector huffington post
The nonprofit sector would eventually cease to exist without boards because they are responsible for instilling public trust, ensuring strong leadership and enabling staff and CEO transitions, writes BoardSource President and CEO Anne Wallestad. "The nonprofit sector is too critical to our society and our communities to have a cavalier attitude about its sustainability and survival," she writes. "And it's too critical to abandon the very good idea requirement that each organization have a group of people who are bound and committed to the organization's success in such a real way that they are willing to put their own financial, reputational, and social capital on the line." Who Brands Your Nonprofit? Who Tells Its Story and How? NPQ
Dr. David Denborough, a pioneer in narrative therapy, says "who we are and what we do" is influenced by the stories we tell about ourselves. "We take certain events and link them together into a plot or theme. And this plot or theme about our lives then shapes our identities." Read the entire article here.
5 Reasons Why Every Nonprofit CEO/ED Should Blog
There's no arguing that a nonprofit CEO or Executive Director is the most influential member of your organization. After all, why else would the cover letter for the annual report or your gift acknowledgements be penned by them? Just like those donor communications pieces, a blog can be a great place to let the leader of your nonprofit shine. Read more here.
