Remembering Harland Sedgwick
and Richard Lindner
The airport community lost two great friends over the past month.  Harland Sedgwick died January 8 at the age of 95 and Richard Lindner passed away on December 2 at the age of 73.

Harland is a legendary former airport manager and partial owner of an FBO at Crites Field, where he began as a flight instructor for Spring City Flying Service. He was also an FAA Pilot Examiner.  He served in the Army Air Force in WWII and worked for Waukesha Motor Corp after the war.  A touching tribute to Harland by Pete Schoeninger has been posted on the Waukesha Aviation Club Facebook Page.

Richard Lindner, a former airport tenant, was dedicated to the family business and the employees of Advance Transportation. He is survived by his loving wife Cathryn, of 44 years and his children Sue, Patti, Gregg and Scott. He enjoyed spending his summers in Canada, winters in Florida, and was an avid pilot, fisherman and snowmobiler.
Time for Coffee Talk!
Mark your calendar - the next Waukesha Aviation Club Coffee Talk will be held February 2 from 8 - 10 am in the terminal conference room.  Coffee and doughnuts are complimentary and ramp fees are waived for those coming from other airports.

Come and join your fellow pilots and aviation enthusiasts for a conversation about flights, upcoming aviation events, scholarship opportunities, memories, near-misses, and good old-fashioned networking!  You do not need to be a member of the club, nor do you have to be a pilot.  You may even bring your own, aviation-themed mug!
Faces in the News
If you read the November/December issue of Warbirds International magazine, you may have noticed a nice article about the Mustangs over Michigan event, which featured photos of our own Tony Buechler and his famous P-51 Mustang. Waukesha pilots are frequently popping up in all of the aviation magazines, and we also spotted Carl Schwerman and his son Eric in EAA Warbirds Magazine's review of AirVenture.  Nice to see all of your smiling faces out there enjoying the wonderful world of aviation!

Greetings!

I am excited to announce that, after an extensive interview process with several highly qualified candidates from across the country, we have selected Kurt Stanich as the new Airport Manager!  I truly appreciate all of the advice that I received in the selection process from so many of you, and the strong support that I heard for Kurt to take on this new responsibility.

Since 2007, Kurt has served as the Airport Operations Manager and your primary point of contact for everything from airport equipment in need of maintenance to wildlife on the runways and special events.  For those who are not aware, Kurt has also been serving as Interim Airport Manager since Keith Markano's departure in July, and he also served in this role for several months in late 2011 when Keith was out on short-term disability for several months.  This experience has given us great confidence that he is the perfect choice to move up to Airport Manager.  Please join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved promotion!

Since Kurt has been serving double duty for much of the past year, one of his first priorities as Airport Manager is to hire his successor as the Operations Manager in order to ensure both roles are functioning at full capacity.  If you know of any good candidates, please send them his way!

And, as always, if there is anything either of us can do to improve your airport experience, please don't hesitate to contact us.  Thank you everyone!

Sincerely,

Allison Bussler

Vic over Miller Park
Honoring Veterans a Top Priority of  Waukesha Aviators
Every year, pilots from across the airport volunteer their time, their aircraft and the fuel required to fly in numerous events honoring our fallen military veterans.  These events range from national holidays to private funeral fly-overs, and 2012 was an exceptional year for these extraordinary volunteer efforts.
In the December issue of EAA Warbirds Magazine, Vic Stottlemyer authored an article that chronicled his experience in the "Field of Honor Flyover" for the premiere of the Honor Flight movie at Miller Park in mid-August.  Stottlemyer coordinated the flyover which included his own T-6 and three others owned and flown by Aaron Marshall, Stan Markus and Eric Woelbing; Scott Marshall in his Stearman; Tony Buechler in his P-51 Mustang, Paul Keppeler in his T-33; Steve Betzler in the CAF's PT-26; Sam and Shari Taber in their L-5 and L-4 airplanes; Kevin Eldridge in his P-38 and Warbirds Magazine editor Jim Busha in his L-3.  The 90-minute fly-over was a highlight for the 28,000 people who attended the event, and also set a Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a movie premiere.

On December 28, our own Commemorative Air Force - Wisconsin Wing participated in a fly-over for a memorial service for Jim Sullivan, a retired Vice President of Briggs & Stratton who served as a Lieutenant Commander Senior Grade flying Corsairs and SBDs in the U.S. Navy in World War II.  This is just one of several such fly-overs that are requested and quietly organized and conducted by the generous pilots of Waukesha County Airport.

Hats off to all of you who perform such an honorable service to our nation's veterans.  Any other pilots who would like to volunteer your time, aircraft and fuel to such worthy efforts would be welcome to volunteer.  Please contact the airport management office and we will make the connection for you.
Crites Field a Great Option for Corporate Aviation
A recent article in the Business Journal featured interviews with MillerCoors, Johnson Controls, Northwestern Mutual and the MMAC regarding the lack of direct flights available from Milwaukee since the airlines have reduced their service to this market over the past year. According to the article, many companies are sending their employees to Chicago for airline flights, and they have noted the negative impact on employee productivity when travel takes significantly more time than it has in the past. We realize that many businesses do not realize the convenient corporate travel options that exist at Waukesha County Airport, including charter flights, aircraft management and fractional share aviation services, which are described fully in our corporate aviation brochure.

If your company, or someone you know, is struggling to find efficient corporate aviation options out of Milwaukee, we encourage you to share the link to our corporate aviation brochure or our website for more information, or stop by the airport management office for a hard copy of the brochure to share with your corporate contacts. Stein and Spring City  would be happy to help, as well as NetJets and other services that frequently use the airport. More than 50 companies regularly use Waukesha County Airport for their corporate travel needs and we can easily accommodate many more. Plus, we rarely close due to snow, which often means fewer travel delays than Milwaukee.
The Waukesha County Airport/Crites Field Newsletter is intended to inform airport tenants, visitors and other interested individuals about the latest events, news and services available to them at the airport.  If you would like to see a topic featured in the next newsletter, please contact Kurt Stanich in airport operations at kstanich@waukeshacounty.gov or call 262-521-5250.
