Are you ready to see the more serious side of Coward?  Of course, there is witty dialogue in each play, but two upcoming March/April productions in Los Angeles take a dramatic turn.

Opening at Pasadena Playhouse on March 23rd,
A Song at Twilight, directed by Art Manke.  Malibu Playhouse announces the cast for The Vortex, coming April 11th.

Praise for the Kneehigh/Emma Rice adaptation of Brief Encounter, which plays for two more weeks in Beverly Hills -- through March 23rd at The Wallis -- and for Barry Day's charming Valentine cabaret, Love, Nol, directed by Jeanie Hackett.

With A Song at Twilight as the seventh of Noel Coward's plays on his resume - including the American premiere of Star Quality - director Art Manke has earned the nickname, "L.A.'s Coward specialist" from the Los Angeles Times. His recent hit revival of Coward's Fallen Angels broke box office records at the Pasadena Playhouse, and transferred for an extended run at Laguna Playhouse.

Manke commented, "Despite several decades of audiences roaring with laughter at his plays, Nol Coward was often the target of critics who found his work to be thin, at best. With his final play, A Song at Twilight, he had the last laugh and proved that in addition to the usual sparklingly witty dialogue, he could craft characters of great depth and pathos."

Direct from England, the celebrated Kneehigh Theatre production of
Brief Encounter -- a smash hit in San Francisco in 2009 and world-wide -- made its LA premiere at the Bram Goldsmith Theater in The Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills.  Just two weeks left for you to see this acclaimed show in Los Angeles.

From Charles McNulty, Los Angeles Times, Feb. 20, 2014:

If you love the movie (and what emotionally sentient human being doesn't?), you'll surely get a kick out of Kneehigh's ingenious homage.

Adapter/Director Emma Rice takes you back to an era of romance and the silver screen.  The production, which The New York Times hailed as "The most enchanting work of stagecraft ever inspired by a movie", blends theater and film, using a combination of Nol Coward's original stage play Still Life and Coward's own screenplay for the classic 1945 British film Brief Encounter, directed by David Lean.

Led by Hannah Elland and Jim Sturgeon, the Broadway Cast of Brief Encounter will appear at The Wallis, including New York cast members Joe Alessi, Dorothy Atkinson, Damon Daunno, and Annette Laughlin.  Musician David Brown appeared in the show in the UK, and musician James Gow joins the company for The Wallis engagement.

From the blog of Jay Weston, on Feb 19th in the Huff Post Los Angeles:

Who would have dreamed that the best nightclub performance I have ever seen in Beverly Hills would happen at the new Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts? Yes, someone had the brilliant idea to take the smaller Lovelace Studio theater at The Wallis and turn it into a cabaret for two brilliant performers to act and sing in. (The venue actually offers to sell drinks and snacks before the show and during the intermission. So civilized, to sip a cocktail while enjoying the show.)

Love Noel: The Letters and Songs of Nol Coward, has opened for several performances, mostly sold out. May I suggest to Ms. Lou Moore, the dynamic Executive Director of The Wallis, that they reschedule this show for a return engagement, 'cause it is utterly delightful, full of juicy gossip, snappy banter and Coward's candid humor.

Let's hope Ms. Moore takes Mr. Weston's suggestion to heart, and we see more Coward cabaret in Beverly Hills.
