Love is in the Air: Four Coward Productions in LA Soon
Showcasing works that span much of Noël Coward's career, theatres in greater Los Angeles are providing a banquet of Coward productions in the next three months: his ground-breaking work from 1924, The Vortex; Emma Rice's Kneehigh adaptation of Brief Encounter; from 1966, planned by Coward as his theatrical swan song, one of the trio "Suite in Three Keys", A Song at Twilight; and Love, Noël, a new work devised by Sir Barry Day from Coward's letters and songs, directed by Jeanie Hackett.

The Wallis Annenberg Center just announced that due to popular demand, they are extending the run of Love, Noël, which now opens on Friday, February 14th, and closes Sunday, February 23rd.

Happy Valentine's Day!

The Wallis Annenberg announced this week that Tony nominee Judy Kuhn (She Loves Me, Chess and Les Misérables) and Tony winner and five-time Emmy nominee John Glover (Love! Valour! Compassion!, "Smallville") will star in Love, Noël: The Letters and Songs of Noël Cowarddevised and written by noted Coward authority, Sir Barry Day.

Director Jeanie Hackett brings considerable Coward expertise to this show. Among her many outstanding works, she oversaw the 2007-2011 productions by The Antaeus Company of a set of Coward's plays, which received multiple LA theater awards: all ten of the Tonight at 8:30 one-acts, and the multi-year development of Barry Creyton's adaptation of Coward's Peace in Our Time.

Musical direction and piano accompaniment is by David O. -- the most recent recipient of the LA Drama Critics Circle Joel Hirschhorn Award for Excellence in Musical Theatre.

Based on Barry Day's book, The Letters of Noël CowardLove, Noëis
an intimate nightclub entertainment that interweaves a fine selection of Coward's songs (he wrote hundreds!) with witty letters exchanged across the decades between Noël and his famous friends.

LA Premiere Opens Saturday, February 15 at The Wallis

Direct from England, the celebrated Kneehigh Theatre production of Brief Encounter -- a smash hit in San Francisco in 2009 and world-wide -- makes its LA premiere at the Bram Goldsmith Theater in The Wallis Annenberg Center in Beverly Hills.

Adapter/Director Emma Rice takes you back to an era of romance and the silver screen.  The production, which The New York Times hailed as "The most enchanting work of stagecraft ever inspired by a movie", blends theater and film, using a combination of Noël Coward's original stage play Still Life and Coward's own screenplay for the classic 1945 British film Brief Encounter, directed by David Lean.

Led by Hannah Elland and Tristan Sturrock, the Broadway Cast of Brief Encounter will appear at The Wallis, including New York cast members Joe Alessi, Dorothy Atkinson, Damon Daunno, and Annette Laughlin.  Musician David Brown appeared in the show in the UK, and musician James Gow joins the company for The Wallis engagement.

About The Wallis

Located in the heart of Beverly Hills, the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts ("The Wallis") has transformed a Beverly Hills city block, facing Santa Monica Boulevard, between Crescent and Canon Drives, into a vibrant new cultural destination with two distinct, elegant buildings: the historic 1933 Italianate-style Beverly Hills Post Office (now the Paula Kent Meehan Historic Building) and the new, contemporary 500-seat, state-of-the-art Bram Goldsmith Theater.

Together these two structures embrace the city's history and future, creating a new cultural landmark. Within the treasured Post Office, existing spaces have been re-imagined into the 150-seat Lovelace Studio Theater, a theater school for young people, a café, and gift shop.  The Wallis -- the first performing arts center to be built in Beverly Hills -- is now a home for artists from around the world and audiences of every age.
