SEZ WHO?
Lately, headlines and TV news stories have focused on the wages paid to workers at fast food places and others. The complaint seems to be about the Minimum Wage. The individuals complaining are expressing the opinion that it is too low, not fair, inadequate to live on and that they are entitled to more. I have managed commission sales persons who felt that they should have more money too. My answer to them was, "Want to make more? Then sell more!" As far as I know, anyone working is an "employee at will" here in the USA. If he or she wants to quit that is their privilege. And if the employer wants to remove said person from their job, they can. If you cannot live on what you are getting paid, whose problem is that? Work more, get another job, do something for yourself. But what are those people saying? "It's Unfair! We are entitled to more money!" To that I must ask, "Sez who?"

 WHO IS THIS CAPTAIN SAFETY GUY? Actually no one knows but it is only a coincidence that Captain Safety and your editor look a little bit alike. Gamka is an associate member of the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association. Part of their monthly meeting agenda includes a visit from the Captain who gives brief talks on different topics on how to avoid hazards to the industry. This month the Captain talks about a danger that affects people from every industry. Note that he calls for audience participation and even has an Emergency Beacon prop! Here is what Captain Safety will say this month... Hello everyone, you are probably all thinking that Captain Safety wants to talk about how to be safe in cold weather, just like he did last year. Well, that is wrong! Today Captain Safety is going to talk about a subject much more serious than frostbite. What could be worse than that? Heart attacks and strokes! During the snow plow season, how many of you eat poorly, drink too much coffee, don't sleep enough, push yourselves too hard and take cat naps in the truck so you can keep on plowing? (Hands?) So what's the problem? You may be a candidate for a heart attack or stroke, that's what! Did you know that one in two men and 64 percent of all women who die suddenly from a heart attack experienced no previous symptoms? Many victims don't get crushing chest pains. They have "Silent attacks where there are no obvious symptoms. Can you name five warning signs of a heart attack? If you can't, you are in good company. 75 percent of people not only can't name five warning signs, but also don't know what to do if those symptoms appear. The signs are: 1) Chest pain or discomfort 2) Shortness of breath 3) Discomfort or pain in the arms or shoulder 4) Discomfort or pain in the jaw, neck or back 5) A feeling of weakness or lightheadedness What else? Other potential symptoms of a heart attack include nausea, vomiting, indigestion and sweaty or clammy skin. Not knowing the symptoms can literally kill you, because half the estimated 175,000 people in the US and Canada who die from heart attacks every year do so within an hour of experiencing symptoms. Getting to a hospital as soon as possible can make the difference between surviving and dying. Do you agree? I cannot hear you! And what are the signs of a stroke? Think of the word FAST: F is for Face. Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the mouth droop? A is for Arms. Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one drift down? S is for Speech. Ask the person to say a simple sentence. Is their speech slurred or strange? T is for Time. If you see any of those signs, call 911 right away! Let's all remember, this is not just about you and your employees. Your customers could have a heart attack or stroke too. Don't brush off heart attack or stroke symptoms. Call 911 immediately. Right? I cannot hear you! OK! Immediate treatment can save lives but one third of acute stroke victims don't take an ambulance to the hospital. (At this point, Captain Safety surreptitiously turns on the Emergency Safety Beacon) Be sure to share all this information with your workers and document when you did it and who was there for your files in case the man from OSHA audits you. Uh-Oh, there goes the Emergency Safety Beacon. An accident is about to happen and Captain Safety must leave to prevent someone from getting hurt. Before he goes, remember, Better Safe Than Sorry! Repeat after me, Better Safe Than Sorry!
