Greetings!
Over the holidays my wife and I joined other family members in a small reunion at a local restaurant. It was one of those chains, a Chili's, with a big seating area for dining and a bar with booths. As we were leaving a young man passed next to us, in uniform. Nowadays everyone is looking young to me. He was wearing the Army Combat Uniform which is a camouflage pattern and was trim, fit and erect, all the things I tried to think I was, once upon a time. As he walked by, I said, "Thank you for your service!" He looked surprised, then perhaps a bit pleased and we went our separate ways. When you consider the sacrifices our armed services make voluntarily, expressing my gratitude was barely enough to register on the payback dial. Since then I have regretted not doing more, like buying him a drink or lunch. It is so little in comparison.
Next time I see a a man or woman in uniform, I will do more than say thanks. How about you?
