The recent tragic fire on Howe Avenue in Shelton has brought with it a very touching and effective response from the community. The main story is the incredible job done by Echo Hose firemen and other first responders in saving the lives of all the tenants. They then used the fire house as a base for providing the short term needs of those affected, while also setting up the Howe Avenue Relief Fund. In the days since the fire, many others including Valley United Way, have been actively assisting the efforts to restore normalcy to the life of those displaced.
We were extremely pleased to be part of an effort by Valley funders including ourselves, the Valley Community Foundation, and the Katharine Matthies Foundation joined by Griffin Hospital to provide funding to help the displaced tenants find new homes. TEAM, Inc. has been doing a great job in providing case management services to the tenants.
You can read that story here.

Students Lend a Helping Hand
|
Add the students at Mohegan School to the list of those helping to ease the pain of the victims of the Howe Avenue fire. The students decided to do something to help - and they did an incredible job in raising $1,200 to purchase gift cards that TEAM, Inc. will help distribute as part of the case management work that they are doing with them.

Since 1990, Valley United Way Youth Leadership members have distributed small, venture grants to community organizations in the Valley area. These grants are aimed at helping to fund new and/or expanding programs that serve the needs of Valley Youth.
Thanks to a grant from Prudential, Valley United Way Youth Leaders traveled to Camp Jewell in Colebrook, CT. They arrived on January 31, 2014. Twenty five members of the program reviewed Request for Proposals applications and after many hours of discussion, they determined which requests were granted.
This year, $2,000 was available to allocate to programs they felt most worthwhile and met the needs of Youth in the community determined by their annual needs assessment. The following areas were identified as a critical concern to Valley teens: drugs and alcohol, bullying, texting and driving, teen violence, the arts, stress, mentors and after school activities.
To see who they approved for venture grant funding visit our website. or watch their video.
Applications for a new class of students will be available shortly on the website.
