Youth Leaders Celebrate Their Allocations Decisions
|
This weekend the Valley United Way Youth Leaders decided what programs to allocate part of their $2,000 funds to based on which they felt most met the needs of youth in the community. The following areas were identified as of critical concern to Valley teens: bullying, texting and driving, drugs, alcohol, teen violence, the arts, stress, mentors and after school activities.

Nominate the Next Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award Recipient
| CHARLES H. FLYNN |
Valley United Way is now accepting applications for the 2013 Charles H. Flynn Humanitarian Award, the Valley's oldest and most prestigious award for community service. The award has been presented annually since 1971. It is restricted to living persons whose service has been to the Valley community. That service must encompass more than one town and more than one organization. The award is for a single individual.
The 2013 award winner will be announced in March and and will be presented at the Annual Meeting in April. The deadline for nominations to be considered for the 2013 award is Friday, February 22.

Governor's Nonprofit Liaison Visits
|
The Valley Council for Health & Human Services is one of the groups that regularly uses United Way's Lavietes Conference Room for their monthly meetings. This month they had a special guest when Terry Edelstein, Governor Malloy's Nonprofit Liaison, attended the meeting to update the group on the state's plans for working with the nonprofit community and to hear the concerns of local providers. State Representatives Linda Gentile, Jason Perillo, Larry Miller and Theresa Conroy also attended along with State Senator Kevin Kelly. Both the Lavietes Room and the Katherine Matthies Room are used regularly by the Valley's nonprofit community, and United Way is pleased to be able to offer the rooms for their use. Reservations need to be made in advance, and the form can be submitted on line by clicking here.

Updated Website Coming Soon
| Did you know that Valley United Way was the very first United Way in Connecticut to have a website on the Internet, or that our site was once judged the best United Way website in the country for our size or smaller United Ways? We have also been pioneers with video before there was YouTube, e-Groups before there was Facebook and listserves before there was Twitter. However, we have to confess that though our site always contains the latest news, it is a bit outdated in look and feel. However, thanks to the generous support of the Raymond P. Lavietes Foundation that will all change in 2013. Watch for our first major upgrade and functionality in February! |
