Sunday and Special Worship Services and Schedule

Sunday, July 3

"Just Three Things"
The Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wrote that he had "just three things to teach: simplicity, patience and compassion." Today we explore these things, which he referred to as our "greatest treasures."

Rev, Mary Frances Comer

Sunday, July 10

"Breathe Deeply,...."
When each of us as individuals, and the congregation as a whole, pauses from the everyday busyness of living and takes a deep breath, we discover a deeper perspective on the human role on Planet Earth. Humans have developed ways of Knowing that transcend mere details and events; human Doing occurs within the context of the long-term future and mindful of global impacts. Humans' very existence provides a portal through which the wonder of Being shines through. This sermon will explore ways to enhance these capacities.

F. Nelson Stover

Sunday, July 17

"....Act Boldly"
The Human Species is now entering a new era, a time when individuals and organizations, spiritual people and religious congregations, work to foster a mutually enhancing relationship between the human and the non-human realms. Beyond the mere survival, of either our species or of the Planet, this new time has the possibility of thriving beyond any previous expectations and the Human Species has an essential and creative role to play. This sermon will explore ways UUCG can participate in this history-making endeavor.

F. Nelson Stover

Sunday, July 24

"Wonders of the Universe
and the Seventh UU Principle"

Have you looked at the night sky recently? The moon, planets and starts have called out to humans since prehistoric times. What have we recently discovered in this universe? Does it mean anything to us? Dennis will share some interesting discoveries in astronomy, and pose some unanswered questions.

Dennis Hands

Sunday, July 31

"This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things"
Almost every spiritual tradition warns about the dangers of becoming overly attached to your possessions. We will talk about how to balance a love and appreciation for the finer things with spiritual growth.

Wednesday Potluck

We share a potluck supper at 6 p.m. each Wednesday.

Please bring a dish to share and your own table service.

Following the Potluck this Summer ...

Join us each Wednesday night following our traditional potluck supper for some invigorating conversations, and a bit of Star Trek thrown in for fun.

This summer on Wednesday nights, beginning at 7:00 PM, Barbara Hands will lead discussions concerning the four major philosophical ethical theories as they are demonstrated in the widely popular sci-fi series Star Trek.  We will delve into The Divine Command Theory, Consequentialism and Virtue Ethics, among others.

We will also discuss the idea of "personhood" (philosophically, person and human are not interchangeable). What constitutes a person and when does one gain the rights and privileges of being able to be called a person.  If time permits, we will also look into the issue of aging and death with dignity.   Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes depending on depth of discussions.
Except as noted, all episodes will be from The Next Generation franchise.

The schedule for the remainder of the summer is:

Ethics
          July 6 - "Ethics"
July 13 - "City on the Edge of Forever" (original series)

Personhood and the Enduring Self
July 20 - "The Measure of a Man"
          July 27 - "The Offspring"
          Aug 3 - "The Host"

The Nature of Reality
Aug 10 - "Elementary Dear Data"
          Aug 17 - "Ship in a Bottle"

Time Travel
          Aug 24 - "Time's Arrow, part 1"
          Aug 31 - "Time's Arrow, part 2"

Cindy Dillard, Youth Religious Education Director

Cindy Dillard 2013

During my first years at UUCG, you-our members and friends-have always provided me with a budget that provides for professional development (as well as for RE supplies). Every year, I have spent those funds-with gratitude-on trainings and resources, from which our children and youth have greatly benefited (especially during 2014-15, when all of our children and youth-and their families-were engaged in OWL [Our Whole Lives] Education).

This year, I am experiencing a new level of appreciation for UUCG's financial support of my professional development after participating in my first UUA General Assembly. Please join me (as well as my fellow GA attendees, as they are available) for a potluck lunch after church on Sunday, July 17. Come hear what we learned from our 4,000+ fellow UUs, and the ideas we have for this year and beyond (maybe even into "infinity...! " and beyond, right?) I hope you will be available to break bread with us, visit with us, dream with us and plan with us. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

SUMMER SCHEDULE:
During the summer, children begin in the service at 10:55 a.m.with their families in the Sanctuary. After a story-for-all-ages, children aged pre-school thru 5th grade adjourn to the RE wing to put into practice our UU Principles through cooperative games. The exception is the 2nd Sunday of the month, when our children & youth participate in our monthly justice action project "Taking It T-UU The Streets" (TTS), preparing carebags for the needy. Still putting into practice our UU Principles...just in a different way. Each Sunday, nursery care for our youngest is provided starting at 10:15am. Children/youth older than 5th grade are invited to remain in the service. Youth volunteers are welcome into the classroom after having a conversation with Cindy Dillard, DRE Youth & Children (uucgre@att.net).

From Congregational President Lonnie Houck

For me personally, this last week highlighted the reasons I am involved with a wonderful church.

Over the last week, three friends or family members passed away. One was expected. Dan Shannon lost his three-year fight with cancer but the others were not expected.

Marie's father, Bernard St. George who many of you had gotten to know from their yearly visits, died at home in Duluth.

Another shock was hearing that an old friend from San Jose, Calif., who had been a Chalice Circle leader with me and had decided to become a UU minister, died of a heart attack. This was the Rev. Suzanne Marsh. Having had these losses made it all the more important that I was connected to a loving, supportive community.

With Ann Marie moving on to The First Unitarian Society of Plainfield NJ as their Developmental Minister, I want to thank her for her work with us over the last three years. Demonstrating clear boundaries and providing good ministerial support of stewardship were important tasks accomplished during her time with us. Helping us look at our UU identity has moved us forward on developing a mission and vision for ourselves. This important work will be concluded over the next few months.

During the Congregational Meeting in May, we voted to begin the two year process of searching for a called minister. This was an exciting beginning and you will hear more about this process over the next two or three months. Between now and calling a new minister in two years, we have hired a Minister to help us get ready for the next phase in our Congregation's life. The Rev. Diane Dowgiert will become our Interim Minister on August 1 and will also be traveling to Greensboro in early July for apartment hunting and some early meetings with church leadership. I look forward with eagerness for our partnership together.

Sunday Afternoon Meditation

Every Sunday Afternoon
Deep River Sangha, Buddhist meditation
 4:00 - 5:30

Due to the replacement of the floor in the Sanctuary, the Deep River Sangha will resume on Sunday, June 12.

Our Interim Minister

The Interim Minister Search Task Force is delighted to introduce
Rev. Diane Dowgiert as our new Interrim Minister.

For the past 10 years, she has been pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson (Arizona).  Before that, she led First Unitarian Universalist Society, a 150-year-old congregation  in Marietta, Ohio.  She served her internship with the UU congregation in Chapel Hill, N.C.

She told us: "Times of transition are ripe with opportunity for growth and change. The congregations I have served have taught me well what our UU congregations need in order to thrive in the 21st century."

Diane's service in Tucson began in 2006.  She helped the congregation to stabilize after several turnovers of the pulpit, to improve its organizational structure, to grow, and to revitalize its social justice work.  In 2012, the church's ministry, "No More Deaths," was awarded the Wilton Peace Prize for humanitarian efforts to end migrant worker suffering in the deserts of southern Arizona.  Two years earlier, the congregation received the Bennett Award for exemplary social justice work.

In contrast to the Tucson church of nearly 300 members, the Marietta congregation had only about 120 members, who had been through several years of conflict.  In addition, Rev. Dowgiert helped the members cope with major flooding, which damaged the church building, members' homes, and nearly wiped out the community's business district.  By the time she left, the congregation was healthy and stable and the building and grounds were in the best shape they had been in for years.

Before entering the ministry, she worked in social service agencies, a department store and bank, as well as doing community volunteer work and being a stay-home mother.

Rev. Dowgiert's husband of more than 40 years, Al, took early retirement at the same time she entered seminary.  She said, "Since then, he's been a supportive minister's spouse, finding work wherever we've been called.  Al currently works of the University of Arizona in the Parking and Transportation Department.  In the past, he owned and operated a small furniture making business.  As he's beginning to think about retirement, he's also developing a new woodworking business.  We have two adult sons, a beautiful daugher-in-law, and two adorable cats."

Coffee Volunteers

Volunteers are needed for Coffee Hour.  It is a gift of a time and joy we can all share.  Anyone can sign up; the sheet is on the bulletin board just outside the kitchen, next to the 'Flowers' sign-up.  Serving coffee is easy, and we will be glad to go through it with anyone interested.

We would like to express a sincere "Thank You!" to the great folks who have volunteered to provide coffee after Sunday service.

Karen and Robb Fulkerson

Ladies' and Men's Night Out

Ladies' Night Out

We return to the Saigon Restaurant the last Monday of July (25th) at 6:30 pm.  We heartily welcome newcomers.  If we have ten in attendance we have the option of the chef preparing the dinner with our approval of his suggestions.  The other option is choosing your dinner from the menu.  It's a fun evening where we get to learn more about each other as we eat tasty Vietnamese food. The cost is around $10.00.  If you plan to attend, please phone Mary Davis at 212-0819 or Janet Plummber at 294-6364.

Men's Night Out

Join us the 2nd Monday of the month -- July 11 -- at 6 p.m. at Villarosa,  6010 Landmark Center Blvd, Greensboro, near I-40 and Wendover.  We also meet on the last Monday of each month at Applebee's on Battleground Avenue at 6 p.m.

Styrofoam Collection

UUCG Styrofoam Collection Program

We are looking for volunteers for the next several months to handle the emptying of bins and transport of the collected Styrofoam to Dart, Inc. in  Randleman, NC.  Usually it is taken every 5 to 6 weeks.  If you can help your planet and community, or if you need more information, please contact  Vance Archer

Justice Action Team Update

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

On the first Monday of each month, volunteers from our church and from Hinshaw United Methodist church serve a meal of chili, fruit salad, corn-bean salad and homemade cookies to an appreciative group of residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry night shelter.

This project depends on the labor of volunteers and financial support from the church budget.  Some of the volunteers make cookies and some help with preparing the meal.

If you would like to be part of the crew, contact Ken Knight at oldpeacenik@gmail.com.

TAKING IT T-UU THE STREETS (TTS)

Since Sept 2013, UUCG has been engaged in a justice action project that speaks across boundaries:

  • for those who have an extra $5, $10 or $20 dollars, TTS is a project of UUCG that accepts donations to help purchase individual hygiene and non-perishable food items
  • for those who aren't able to contribute funds, but who might see a good deal on some granola bars or juice boxes while shopping for their families, TTS is a project of UUCG to which they can drop off those items into the basket in the lobby
  • for those who travel a lot (or even a little) and don't need the individual-portioned hotel shampoos, soaps, etc, TTS gladly accepts individual hygiene items for the carebags
  • for those who aren't comfortable giving money to those in need, but want to do something to acknowledge the humanity of those standing on the side of the street, TTS provides a carebag of healthy items (as well as a message of kindness, decorated by our children) for you to take with you and distribute when you see those in need
AND
  • FOR OUR CHILDREN, WHO MIGHT NOT HAVE EVER PARTICIPATED IN AN ACT OF SOCIAL JUSTICE, TTS gives our youngest a way to think about those who are less fortunate and engage in an action that is safe for them, but also has meaning. TTS is framed around their experiences seeing folks on the side of the road with cardboard signs, and gives them a hands-on activity "to become part of the solution."

Our next Carebag Assembling will take place on Sunday, July 10. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (DRE Youth & Children) uucgre@att.net.

Strategic Planning Update

Have you heard of the "Enigma" machine?  The German engineer Arthur Scherbius invented the Enigma machine at the end of World War I.  The German military used the machine to encipher messages.  As the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, the process of coming up with a new vision and mission statement feels somewhat like deciphering the messages that we have heard from the congregation through the surveys and listening circles and condensing these messages into a couple of short sentences.

Our committee has collaboratively crafted this first draft of the mission and vision, but we all carry around our own cipher.  Up to the point when this article was due, we could not all agree on just ONE version.

Therefore, I am asking all of you to take some time to think about this first draft of the vision and mission over the summer.  If the timeline works out and we'll get an interim minister starting on August 1st, 2016, we'll present the new minister with this draft and he/she will have a chance to look at it with fresh eyes and see if our draft matches what he/she actually observes at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro.

Our next listening session will be in early fall.  We appreciate your patience with us, and we hope you will continue to support our strategic planning work!

Draft of the vision:
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro is a place of religious worship, spirituality, learning, and community service.  Our church is inclusive, based on love, compassion, responsibility, shared power, and respect for all people, places, and things.
We provide a safe place for families and individuals wanting a religion based on principles rather than creed, and discussion rather than dogma.
We aspire to be an attractive, thought-provoking and adventurous place to worship, providing many opportunities for our members to participate in the church and local community.

MISSION:
Love +Learning = Service

Need a current UUCG directory?  Interested in Board reports?

These and other important documents are posted on our UUCG website.  You can also find our current bylaws, budget and other governance related documents.

To do this, go to the uugreensboro.org website and select the "For Members" tab at the upper right hand corner of the home page.  From the "For Members" page, select "Access Member Documents" under the Member Documents heading.  As you'll see, a password is required, which you can get by calling the church office.  Once you access the "For Members" section, you'll find various documents arranged by folders.  Within the folders there may be subsections, such as Board minutes and reports arranged by year and month.  These documents are provided to members so they can be well-informed about how to contact other members and about church governance.

It is also possible to read past issues of the UU News by selecting the News and Events tab.  This will bring up a list of four options, from which you select "Newsletters".  On the page this brings up, is one sentence: You can access all newsletters here.  Clicking on the "here" link will take you to past newsletters.
If you have further questions about accessing member documents on the website, you are welcome to contact me at sharinfrancis@hotmail.com or 336-520-3866.

Board of Trustees

Highlights of the June 16, 2016 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
  • Karen Madrone, President, welcomed incoming 2016-17 Board members: Nora Byrd, Jeff Gauger, Lonnie Houck and Mary Alice Knight. Departing Board members, Karen Madrone, Sue Beck and Michelle Lee, were presented with certificates of appreciation for their service on the Board. Karen mentioned having arranged an opportunity at UUA General Assembly for our interim minister, Rev. Diane Dowgiert, to have lunch with UUCG members attending GA. Karen also invited Board members to meet Rev. Diane Dowgiert, at the July 6 potluck during her 3-day introductory visit to Greensboro.
  • Rev. Ann Marie Alderman reported that Worship Team has planned all worship services through the end of August. She also noted the vigil on Friday night, June 17, for Orlando lives lost and that it would be in the Memorial Garden, weather permitting. She gave the year-end report about the Minister's Discretionary Fund.
  • The Board approved the following resolution to express appreciation for the work of the Developmental Taskforce:
The members of the Unitarian Universalist Board of Trustees would like to thank the members of the Developmental Ministry Team for their work over the past three years. Members of the team are Marty Bergman, Betsy Lindsey, Steve Andrews and Tim Leisman. (Joan Skokan left the church last summer.)  Your hard work in providing historical perspective and a safe space for reflecting upon the minister's and the congregation's progress toward the Developmental Ministry goals was instrumental in the Reverend Ann Marie Alderman's successful time as our Developmental Minister. The Board recognizes your efforts and thanks you for a job well done.
  • Susan Hill, Treasurer, reviewed the financial reports, noting that operating income is currently slightly more than expenses.. This is partly because we received the biannual bank lease money and an $800 annual refund from Duke Energy on our equal payment plan. The special fundraiser has also brought in $2,500 so far. At the end of July, all members will receive their annual 2015-16 pledge statements.
  • The Board approved the Policy Book.
  • A motion was tabled, following additional discussion of a proposal from Piedmont Interfaith Conservation Burial Society that UUCG consider accepting land from PICBUS, should it become available in the future.
  • Katie Klod, Smoking Task Force Chair, updated the Board about STF goals and status.

More details are available in reports posted at the UUCG website   http://uugreensboro.org/for-members/members-only/ Go to "2015-16 Board Reports" in June.

The next Board meeting will be Thursday, July 21, at 7:00 pm and is open to all.
