The Philosophy of Star Trek
We can learn many things from Gene Roddenberry's vision of the future. Star Trek is more than just a "wagon train to the stars" story. It is ripe with lessons of family, gender and aging issues, respect for that which is different, and much more.

Live Feed of the Sunday morning worship service at General Assembly
If you have never been able to attend the UUA General Assembly, but have wondered what a worship service might be like, you are in luck. With this year's GA in Ohio, time zones are on our side and we are provided with an interesting, and different from our usual, worship experience. On June 26, we will stream the live feed of GA's Sunday morning worship service. It will begin in our sanctuary at 10:30 a.m.and is scheduled to end at noon. This is a bit earlier than we usually begin, but not to worry. We will call it a "drop in" service. Join us when you arrive, even if it is after 10:30, just drop on in and join in the experience. Do plan on staying after the service for coffee and community.
|

|

Reception for Rev. Ann Marie
|
Plan to linger after the service on Sunday, June 19 for an extra-special coffee hour. This will be our official thank-you to Ann Marie for the last three years of counseling, consulting, and helping us to heal and grow, with an appreciative farewell reception. Coffee, tea, and cookies, of course, but also snacks and cake.

Wednesday Potluck
|
We share a potluck supper at 6 p.m. each Wednesday. EXCEPT WEDS, June 8, while the Sanctuary Floor is being re-finished!
Please bring a dish to share and your own table service starting again on June 15!

Following the Potluck this Summer ...
|
Join us each Wednesday night following our traditional Pot Luck supper beginning June 15 for some invigorating conversations, and a bit of Star Trek thrown in for fun. This summer on Wednesday nights, beginning at 7:00 PM, Barbara Hands will lead discussions concerning the four major philosophical ethical theories as they are demonstrated in the widely popular sci-fi series Star Trek. We will delve into The Divine Command Theory, Consequentialism and Virtue Ethics, among others. We will also discuss the idea of "personhood" (philosophically, person and human are not interchangeable). What constitutes a person and when does one gain the rights and privileges of being able to be called a person. If time permits, we will also look into the issue of aging and death with dignity. Sessions will last approximately 90 minutes depending on depth of discussions.
A more detailed schedule of the summer sessions will be included in the weekly e-announcements. Watch for it.

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|
In the end everyone leaves. It is a painful part of human existence. Yet, it happens. Perhaps, a congregation is just the place to learn to do endings well. If that is true, then this congregation is getting another opportunity to practice, as the end of my time as your developmental minister is coming to a close much sooner than any of us really anticipated.
Sunday, June 19th will be my last time to be with you during a worship service at UUCG. Perhaps, you will come that day to say your goodbye to me. I plan to share my well wishes to you and for this congregation, as I end my time here and move forward to other ministries in another place.
I hope you have or will pick up a hard copy of the Annual Report. They are in the foyer and inside you'll find words on how much we have done together. Or you can find a copy here. Like any decent, loving partner, I am so proud of who we have been. And, I am overjoyed that you have a great interim minister coming to partner well with you very soon. I just know you will do great when you are ready to call a new settled minister, and that minister will really believe they have been chosen by a fabulous church! So, in leaving I will remember the relationship we created and the trust we found. It has been a true pleasure to have been your minister. Rev. Ann Marie |
Cindy Dillard, Youth Religious Education Director
|

At our annual dinner last month, I was proud to host the table for children/youth/young adults. It was a themeless, delightful mess --everyone brought their favorite food, some brought their favorite play-thing to serve as our centerpiece, many indulged in Starburst candies, markers on paper table cloth, and pipe-cleaner bead bracelets (with one spectacular rescue of the bead bin with an assist by Logan-THANK YOU, LOGAN!)
A more serious (but no less delightful) aspect of the annual dinner has been thanking everyone who supports YRE. Sadly, speaking extemporaneously has never been my strong suit (as some of you might already know). While I managed to celebrate my completion of four years as UUCG's DRE, congratulate our youth on their worship service, and give a plug for our all-ages summer program, I failed to thank everyone who has helped our YRE program become what it is.
So, I'd like to use this space now to formally thank everyone who has devoted their time, energy and love to our children and youth during 2015-2016. Thanks to our wonderful volunteer teachers: Marty Bergman, Sharin Francis, Lauren Houck, Shavonta Kuecker, Robin Lewis, Amelia Mattocks, Jake Mattocks, Heather Rushforth, Dakota Spooner & Marty Ward. Many thanks to my YRE Team chair over the last two years, Heather Rushforth, with warm wishes for her next adventure: singing in our choir. And a special thank you to our "floaters", volunteers who forego the worship service to provide a life-line between parents (in worship) and children (in YRE) should any need arise: Michelle Puzio, Laura Graham, Barbara Hughes, Sharin Francis and Meg Wolfe-Roberts
If you would like to become involved in this ministry, a ministry that involves working with children and youth, but also families and teachers, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
SCHEDULE FOR JUNE:
Sun, June 5-11:00 am "Worship in the Park" Please join us at Gibson Park for our annual worship in nature, followed by a potluck and lots of visiting and play
Sun, June 12-11:00 am Beginning in the service, then adjourning to the RE wing to put into practice our 1st and 2nd UU Principles through cooperative games
Sun, June 19-11:00 am Our children & youth will participate in our monthly justice action project "Taking It T-UU The Streets" (TTS), after first beginning in the service

Since this is my last board newsletter column I'm going to use this opportunity to encourage and challenge UUCG to truly live from what you believe.
If you've been a member at UUCG for a while but are not serving in a Team or Committee, I encourage you to think about where you can be of service. Think about the skills you have now and what you would like to learn. If you are interested in serving on a board committee or on the board itself, get in touch with Marty Bergman, the Chair of the Committee on Leadership Development. If working on the ministry side (Worship, Membership, and Communications for example) calls to you, when our new Interim Minister, Rev. Diane Dowgiert, begins serving at UUCG this fall, talk to her about how you can be of service. I also encourage you to talk to people who are currently serving in these roles. Find out what they do, see if there is a way you can contribute. UUCG is a great place to be a beginner. I'm going to encourage you to make a pledge if you haven't already (if you haven't yet done this for the 2016-2017 church year get on it!). If you haven't increased your pledge in many years, I encourage you to do so. Now. Contact UUCG's Treasurer, Susan Hill, and tell her you are going to increase your pledge. If making a pledge is truly a commitment to you, you're going to find a way to make it work. Your budget is a picture of your values. Whatever giving level you are at now, consider increasing it. I challenge both members and the church itself to get connected to the larger UU movement. Did you know that we are international? Lots of international UU links can be found here: http://www.uua.org/directory/organizations. Did you know you can be a member of both UUCG and the Church of the Larger Fellowship (CLF)? CLF has phenomenal online worship services and a weekly "talk show" called "The VUU" with current UU issues being discussed. In addition, get on the email list from UU World, the Southern Region, and the UUA. It's really, really important to be connected to the larger UU conversation. Finally, have patience and faith in each other. Know that UUCG is an ever-evolving faith community with open minds and open hearts. UUCG does great things now and will continue to do so in the future. To quote Jason Shelton, a UU songwriter, "Love one another, honor one another, serve one another, that's how we understand. Love one another, honor one another, serve one another, as equals hand in hand."

Our Interim Minister
|
The Interim Minister Search Task Force is delighted to introduce Rev. Diane Dowgiert as our new Interrim Minister.
For the past 10 years, she has been pastor of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Tucson (Arizona). Before that, she led First Unitarian Universalist Society, a 150-year-old congregation in Marietta, Ohio. She served her internship with the UU congregation in Chapel Hill, N.C. She told us: "Times of transition are ripe with opportunity for growth and change. The congregations I have served have taught me well what our UU congregations need in order to thrive in the 21st century." Diane's service in Tucson began in 2006. She helped the congregation to stabilize after several turnovers of the pulpit, to improve its organizational structure, to grow, and to revitalize its social justice work. In 2012, the church's ministry, "No More Deaths," was awarded the Wilton Peace Prize for humanitarian efforts to end migrant worker suffering in the deserts of southern Arizona. Two years earlier, the congregation received the Bennett Award for exemplary social justice work. In contrast to the Tucson church of nearly 300 members, the Marietta congregation had only about 120 members, who had been through several years of conflict. In addition, Rev. Dowgiert helped the members cope with major flooding, which damaged the church building, members' homes, and nearly wiped out the community's business district. By the time she left, the congregation was healthy and stable and the building and grounds were in the best shape they had been in for years. Before entering the ministry, she worked in social service agencies, a department store and bank, as well as doing community volunteer work and being a stay-home mother. Rev. Dowgiert's husband of more than 40 years, Al, took early retirement at the same time she entered seminary. She said, "Since then, he's been a supportive minister's spouse, finding work wherever we've been called. Al currently works of the University of Arizona in the Parking and Transportation Department. In the past, he owned and operated a small furniture making business. As he's beginning to think about retirement, he's also developing a new woodworking business. We have two adult sons, a beautiful daugher-in-law, and two adorable cats."

Justice Action Team Update |
Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry
On the first Monday of each month, volunteers from our church and from Hinshaw United Methodist church serve a meal of chili, fruit salad, corn-bean salad and homemade cookies to an appreciative group of residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry night shelter.
This project depends on the labor of volunteers and financial support from the church budget. Some of the volunteers make cookies and some help with preparing the meal.
If you would like to be part of the crew, contact Ken Knight at oldpeacenik@gmail.com.
TAKING IT T-UU THE STREETS (TTS) One of our church elders was talking with me recently as I was rearranging care bags in the lobby basket. He asked: "So is this thing really working?" or something to that effect. I told him, each month, our children & youth make 40 bags, and our congregation takes them all out into the community. The basket is usually empty within 2 weeks. It's a justice action project in which everyone can participate on many levels -- and it's been going on for over 3 years now. I hope that EVERYONE will know that TTS continues to support our needy, and that they will continue to support our congregation's need to help the needy. We are ever in need of supplies & funds. Our next care bag assembling will take place on Sunday, June 19. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

Strategic Planning Update
|
Have you heard of the "Enigma" machine? The German engineer Arthur Scherbius invented the Enigma machine at the end of World War I. The German military used the machine to encipher messages. As the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, the process of coming up with a new vision and mission statement feels somewhat like deciphering the messages that we have heard from the congregation through the surveys and listening circles and condensing these messages into a couple of short sentences.
Our committee has collaboratively crafted this first draft of the mission and vision, but we all carry around our own cipher. Up to the point when this article was due, we could not all agree on just ONE version.
Therefore, I am asking all of you to take some time to think about this first draft of the vision and mission over the summer. If the timeline works out and we'll get an interim minister starting on August 1st, 2016, we'll present the new minister with this draft and he/she will have a chance to look at it with fresh eyes and see if our draft matches what he/she actually observes at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro.
Our next listening session will be in early fall. We appreciate your patience with us, and we hope you will continue to support our strategic planning work!
Draft of the vision: The Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro is a place of religious worship, spirituality, learning, and community service. Our church is inclusive, based on love, compassion, responsibility, shared power, and respect for all people, places, and things. We provide a safe place for families and individuals wanting a religion based on principles rather than creed, and discussion rather than dogma. We aspire to be an attractive, thought-provoking and adventurous place to worship, providing many opportunities for our members to participate in the church and local community. MISSION: Love +Learning = Service

Need a current UUCG directory? Interested in Board reports?
These and other important documents are posted on our UUCG website. You can also find our current bylaws, budget and other governance related documents.
To do this, go to the uugreensboro.org website and select the "For Members" tab at the upper right hand corner of the home page. From the "For Members" page, select "Access Member Documents" under the Member Documents heading. As you'll see, a password is required, which you can get by calling the church office. Once you access the "For Members" section, you'll find various documents arranged by folders. Within the folders there may be subsections, such as Board minutes and reports arranged by year and month. These documents are provided to members so they can be well-informed about how to contact other members and about church governance.
It is also possible to read past issues of the UU News by selecting the News and Events tab. This will bring up a list of four options, from which you select "Newsletters". On the page this brings up, is one sentence: You can access all newsletters here. Clicking on the "here" link will take you to past newsletters. If you have further questions about accessing member documents on the website, you are welcome to contact me at sharinfrancis@hotmail.com or 336-520-3866. Thank you, Sharin Francis Board Secretary
