Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
My time with you is quickly coming to an end.  Father's Day will likely be my last Sunday at UUCG.  Following that I will be taking the rest of my vacation and study leave to complete this, the third of my 3 years as your Developmental Minister.  Even though our time was short I sincerely believe that together we have accomplished a lot!   There are "fresh" new members who are eager to continue to be fully engaged as UU's in Greensboro, and as members at UUCG.  There are those individuals who disappeared for a while, and now are back.  And, there are long timers who are excited and encouraged about what UUCG has become.  I was curious about who makes up UUCG's membership as that might relate to certain markers.  This is what I found:  37% of the current members joined before the last "settled" minister was called.  30% of the current members joined during the tenure of that settled minister and are still here.  The remaining 33% joined after that minister's departure, either during Rev. Eric Posa's time as an interim or mine as developmental minister.  That is a pretty good distribution!   It is my prediction that you will see that distribution shift towards those who have not yet experienced a settled minister at UUCG.  As you say goodbye to me (and to another member headed for the UU ministry in the person of now President of the Board Karen Madrone), be ready to welcome the NEWBIES!  They are on the way in!
In Freeing Faith, Rev. Ann Marie

ANNUAL DINNER

Every year in May, UUCG has an annual dinner to celebrate our successes and to dream about our future.  At this dinner, there is typically a children's table...which I will be hosting again.  This year's Annual Dinner will take place on Saturday, May 21.  And in the spirit of honoring our children, attendees at my table may bring whatever food they wish.  There will be no theme or cuisine -- we will just honor whatever our children want to eat.  If you would like to help host the "children's table," please contact Cindy Dillard, UUCG DRE: uucgre@att.net/614-975-0126

On a different note, YRE will be entering its summer routine: all-ages (pre-thru 5th) Sunday school.  This year, we will be returning to Cooperative Games, which helps our children learn and live our 1st & 2nd principles.  Here is the schedule for May:

From Congregational Vice President Michelle Lee

Ministry Transitions

Michelle Lee 2014
The UUCG board of trustees voted in March 2016 to recommend to the congregation that we begin the process of finding a permanent minister.  This process is called search, choosing this minister is referred to as calling, and this type of minister is a settled or called minister.  At the May 2016 annual meeting, the congregation will vote on whether or not UUCG will begin searching for a settled minister.  We understand that calling a settled minister is a long process, and we need two years to do it well.

At the board's April meeting, in response to the news that Ann Marie will not be renewing her contract as UUCG's developmental minister, we discussed our options for ongoing ministry at UUCG.  The board voted to hire an interim minister, someone with additional specific training in reviewing and revitalizing congregational operations during ministerial transitions.  We anticipate an interim minister beginning at UUCG in August 2016.

The UUCG board of trustees is sad to say goodbye to Ann Marie and her family, even as we celebrate their opportunity and recognize the benefits they can bring to Unitarian Universalism outside of North Carolina. We also recognize our own opportunity for UUCG to get to know and benefit from the professional leadership of another passionate and skilled Unitarian Universalist minister.  We look forward to the months and years ahead.

For more information on ministry transitions... http://www.uua.org/careers/ministers/transitions
If you have additional questions about UUCG's ministry transitions, or anything else related to UUCG's governance, please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president.

 Interim Minister

A message from the Interim Minister Search Task Force
May 1, 2016

The search for an Interim Minister for the 2016-17 church year is underway.  On April 21st the Board of Trustees appointed the following members to serve on the Search Task Force:  Kay Bishop (chair), Charlotte Hamlin, Jim Kalinowski, and Betsy Lindsey.  UUCG's application for an Interim Minister has been submitted to the Transitions Office of the UUA which coordinates applications and matches with interested UU ministers.  The Task Force will be reviewing the list of interested ministers submitted by the Transitions Office in the next two weeks and talking with UUCG staff.  The IM Search Task Force is authorized to extend a one-year contract to the candidate who is the best match, renewable for a second year.  It is anticipated that the interim minister will be selected within the next four weeks.  The Interim Minister will assist the congregation in preparing to search for a Settled Minister.

 Communication Film

Nonviolent Communication

Please save Saturday, May 14, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. for a showing of Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Love.   Rosenberg gives insightful stories, practical exercises and role-plays that will dramatically change your approach to communication.  We will meet at church, serve coffee and donuts and discuss this wonderful seminar.  There will be no signup sheet, just contact Sue Beck to let her know you plan to attend.

Candidates Forum

Look for information in the near future about the slate of Candidates for UUCG and mark your calendar to stay after church on Sunday, May 15th at 12:15 for the Candidates' Forum.

The Leadership Development Committee has nominated the following members: Board officers: President - Lonnie Houck, Vice President - Katja Brown, and five trustees: Jeff Gauger and Robert Gretton (3 year terms), Paul Namaste (2 year term), and Nora Bird and Mary Alice Knight (1 year terms).  Wendell Putney has been nominated for a 3 year term on the Endowment Committee.  At the Forum on the 15th, candidates will be introduced and respond to questions.

Annual Dinner

ANNUAL DINNER 2016   MAY 21st 6:00pm

Please sign up on the bulletin board near the kitchen or contact Cindy Williams by May 15th.
Each year, we gather for a shared meal and shared laughter as we celebrate our work together.  Please come enjoy food and fellowship as we thank the people who volunteered time and talent to UUCG in 2015-16.

Table Hosts will organize a meal for the 8 to 10 people assigned to their table.  Hosting includes decorating, making sure there are plates and utensils (either by providing them or asking each person to bring their own), and coordinating with each person (or family) what food they are bringing - Salad? Entrée? Dessert? All of this can happen around a theme, for example, a "beach theme" could include paper plates that look like sand dollars, seafood, and you could even wear beach-y attire!

There will be a separate kids' table hosted by Cindy Dillard, our Director of Religious Education.  If your children would like to sit with Cindy and the other children, please indicate by putting their number on the signup sheet under "# of kids".  Children are also welcome to sit with their parents at the adult tables, just include their number under "# of adults".

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

On Monday April 4, 2016 11 volunteers from our church and 5 from Hinshaw United Methodist church served a meal of chili, fruit salad, corn-bean salad and homemade cookies to an appreciative group of residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry night shelter.

This project, which we undertake monthly, depends on the labor of volunteers and financial support from the church budget.  Some of the volunteers make cookies and some help with preparing the meal.

If you would like to be part of the crew, contact Ken Knight at oldpeacenik@gmail.com.

Many thanks to those of you who donate regularly to the TTS basket in the lobby.  Items that are needed include: granola bars, boxes of bandaids, socks, juice boxes, individual peanut butter containers, and so much more.  Also thanks to those who donate financially.  In celebration of the end of our 2015-2016 YRE year, all classes will meet in rm 6-7 to assemble TTS Carebags on Sunday, May 15, followed by an ice cream social.  We usually assemble 40 carebags --
but the basket in the lobby has been running out after even 2 weeks.  Clearly, there is more need -- and maybe we can expand our reach...with your help.  Thank you in advance for supporting TTS in any way that works for you.  For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

Strategic Planning Update

Have you heard of the "Enigma" machine?  The German engineer Arthur Scherbius invented the Enigma machine at the end of World War I.  The German military used the machine to encipher messages.  As the chair of the Strategic Planning Committee, the process of coming up with a new vision and mission statement feels somewhat like deciphering the messages that we have heard from the congregation through the surveys and listening circles and condensing these messages into a couple of short sentences.

Our committee has collaboratively crafted this first draft of the mission, and vision but we all carry around our own cipher and up to the point when this article was due, we could not all agree on just ONE version.

Therefore, I am asking all of you to take some time to think about this first draft of the vision and mission over the summer.  If the timeline works out and we'll get an interim minister starting on August 1st, 2016, we'll present the new minister with this draft and he/she will have a chance to look at it with fresh eyes and see if our draft matches what he/she actually observes at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro.

Our next listening session will be in early fall.  We appreciate your patience with us, and we hope you will continue to support our strategic planning work!

Draft of the vision:
The Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro is a place of religious worship, spirituality, learning, and community service.  Our church is inclusive, based on love, compassion, responsibility, shared power, and respect for all people, places, and things.
We provide a safe place for families and individuals wanting a religion based on principles rather than creed, and discussion rather than dogma.
We aspire to be an attractive, thought-provoking and adventurous place to worship, providing many opportunities for our members to participate in the church and local community.

MISSION:
Love +Learning = Service

Need a current UUCG directory?  Interested in Board reports?

These and other important documents are posted on our UUCG website.  You can also find our current bylaws, budget and other governance related documents.

To do this, go to the uugreensboro.org website and select the "For Members" tab at the upper right hand corner of the home page.  From the "For Members" page, select "Access Member Documents" under the Member Documents heading.  As you'll see, a password is required, which you can get by calling the church office.  Once you access the "For Members" section, you'll find various documents arranged by folders.  Within the folders there may be subsections, such as Board minutes and reports arranged by year and month.  These documents are provided to members so they can be well-informed about how to contact other members and about church governance.

It is also possible to read past issues of the UU News by selecting the News and Events tab.  This will bring up a list of four options, from which you select "Newsletters".  On the page this brings up, is one sentence: You can access all newsletters here.  Clicking on the "here" link will take you to past newsletters.
If you have further questions about accessing member documents on the website, you are welcome to contact me at sharinfrancis@hotmail.com or 336-520-3866.

Thank you,

Board of Trustees

Highlights of the April 21, 2016 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
  • Karen Madrone, President, reported on initial research concerning next steps in UUCG's ministerial transition
    • The Board approved a motion to create a task force to hire an interim minister to begin August 2016.
    • The Board approved Karen's appointment of interim minister task force members. They are: Kay Bishop, Charlotte Hamlin, Jim Kalinowski and Betsy Lindsey.
    • Lonnie Houck, on behalf of the finance committee, presented and answered questions about the 2016-17 budget to date.  Pledges are still coming in, so the final version of the proposed budget won't be available until closer to the May 1 special called board meeting when the board votes to accept the budget.  On May 22 it will be presented to the congregation at the Annual Meeting when it will go up for a vote.  It was noted that increasing the budget for the minister's salary is important to our efforts to hire an interim minister.
    • Susan Hill, Treasurer, reviewed the financial reports and indicated that income is still a bit behind expenses overall.  The bank lease payment, when it comes in, will bring the budget closer to even.
    • The Board accepted the conflict of interest policy.
    • Rev. Ann Marie Alderman reviewed her report, noting that the four new members who joined in March will be recognized on May 15.  Barbara Hands has agreed to resume her role as chair of Worship Team.  A draft of a three word mission statement has been created in consultation with Strategic Planning Committee.
    • More details are available in reports posted at the UUCG website   http://uugreensboro.org/for-members/members-only/ Go to "2015-16 Board Reports" in April.

The next Board meeting will be Thursday, May 19, at 7:00 pm, and is open to all.
