Inspirations
|
The sense of danger must not disappear:
The way is certainly both short and steep,
However gradual it looks from here;
Look if you like, but you will have to leap...
A solitude ten thousand fathoms deep Sustains the bed on which we lie, my dear; Although I love you, you will have to leap; Our dream of safety has to disappear.
(W.H. Auden, 1907 - 1973)

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

It is starting out as a very wet month! Wet or not, as long as we have electricity and no pronounced flooding, the Annual Pet Blessing Sunday will take place on October 4. Any well-behaved and properly caged or restrained pet is welcome, (along with a human companion!)...or bring a photo!
Later in the month on Sunday, October 25th, we will have a guest preacher visit from the Rev. Marian Stewart, still a member of UUCG, who serves as the pastor of our sister congregation, Northlake UU Church.
After the service, she will share from her Doctor of Divinity dissertation: "Begotten Legacies: Examining the Soul of Inherited Racism". She describes her paper as motivated by her profound personal experience of white privilege and inherited racism. She examined stories of many Southern descendants of slave-holding ancestors to understand the tension, if any, between historic racism and contemporary examples of racism. Personal and family stories are presented in her paper to indicate positions on a cycle from original story to witness, awareness, catharsis, desire for change, and creation of a new story. Should be interesting!
Hope you see you at church!
Yours in faith,
Rev. Ann Marie

JUSTICE ACTION If you consider this concept through the prism of our principles, we are a faith all about seeking justice action for our communities and our world. At UUCG, YRE has a monthly activity for children and youth, providing them with an opportunity to explore the idea of homelessness/being in need and then act by assembling carebags. This is then extended to the congregation, by providing carebags for distribution (and is also sustained by the congregation with donations, both financial and in-kind.) This month, we all have the opportunity to put justice action to work in a different way -- in partnership with many non-profit organizations across the country -- by physically demonstrating on behalf of justice by walking in the streets against hunger. On Sunday, October 18, UUCG will participate in the annual CROPWalk, whose purpose is to raise awareness and funds to end hunger. UUCG's choir will once again sing the national anthem to open the event. Please plan to join the walk after church, Sunday, October 18. I will have a sign-up sheet posted for folks interested in carpooling. You can also contact me @ uucgre@att.net. YRE/SUNDAY SCHOOL [children start in the service @10:55, then adjourn to their classrooms*] 10/4 MULTI-GENERATIONAL SERVICE (children remain in the service): "Blessing of the Animals" 10/11 UU BIBLE/UU TALES (Pre-K thru 2nd Grade) "About the Bible" THE SIMPSONS & UU (3rd thru 7th Grades) "Life on the Fast Lane" CIRCLE OF YOUTH (8th-12th Grades) tbd 10/18 UU BIBLE/UU TALES (Pre-K thru 2nd Grade) "Adam & Eve" THE SIMPSONS & UU (3rd thru 7th Grades) "Bart Gets an 'F'" CIRCLE OF YOUTH (8th-12th Grades) tbd 10/25 UU BIBLE/UU TALES (Pre-K thru 2nd Grade) "Cain & Able" THE SIMPSONS & UU (3rd thru 7th Grades) "One Fish, Two Fish, Blowfish, Blue Fish" CIRCLE OF YOUTH (8th-12th Grades) tbd *CHALICE CLUB, our Fellowship Group for children aged preschool-5th grade, and offered in conjunction with Adult Ed from 9:30-10:30am, has been suspended due to lack of participation. We hope to offer it again in January. NURSERY CARE is provided for children birth-age 4, 10am-12:15pm, extended for special events.

From the Congregational President Karen Madrone
|
The last couple of months for the board have been ones of wonderful questions. Unitarian Universalism specializes in questions. In the past three months there have had two board resignations. One position was filled quickly, the second one we have had a harder time with. The resignations point to questions of how we as a church fill all the required positions according to our bylaws in the face of the reality that we do not currently have enough members to fill all of the leadership positions needed by UUCG as a whole. A board trustee position is not inherently more important than a team lead or committee chair. All leadership positions are necessary for the functioning of our church. One of the larger questions is: how many board trustees are truly needed for the functioning of the board? Will we function just as well (or even better?) with fewer trustees? This is actually a question that will be presented to the congregation on November 1st at the congregational meeting. The Bylaws Taskforce has been hard at work reviewing the bylaws for redundancies and inconsistencies. Many of the items you will be voting on are minor revisions that have been troublesome to us in the past or that no longer work for who we are now. One of the items you need to be aware of is that there is a proposal to reduce the size of the board. When I was informed of the second resignation, my reaction was that we should consider suspending that one portion of the bylaws that says that the President must fill the position within 60 days. The reason I suggested such a wild idea is that the congregational meeting will take place two weeks after the end of that 60 day period. I wanted the board to experiment with what it felt like to operate with one less position filled. If that section of the bylaw proposal is not approved, my plan was to fill it at that time (with the hope that someone accepts my request!). At our September board meeting, we decided by consensus to ask Lonnie Houck to serve as a board member for that two week time period between the end of the 60 day time period and the congregational meeting and he has agreed. For the functioning of the whole church, I hope that this proposal passes because we need leaders serving on both governance committees and in ministry teams and we need to be thinking into the future regarding a called minister search team. We must think strategically. Reducing the size of the board means we have the ability to have more people in other positions in the church. I am convinced that there is a part to play for everyone. We all have gifts to share. If you would like to explore good places for you to serve, I recommend contacting Wendell Putney, chair of the Committee on Leadership Development. Our board is consistently focused on two things: building our foundation and dreaming into the future. If you have questions about our processes, please feel free to talk to any board member. We believe in the future of UUCG. Please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like more information.

Work Day
|
On Saturday, October 10, there will be an all church Work Day starting at 9:15am and running until the early afternoon. In addition to various maintenance chores, we will be landscaping the new Memorial Garden area. Please bring a shovel and a wheelbarrow if you have them, but most importantly, bring yourself. Lunch will be served.

Coffee Volunteers
|
Volunteers are needed for Coffee Hour in October and November. It is a gift of a time and joy we can all share. Anyone can sign up; the sheet is on the bulletin board just outside the kitchen, next to the 'Flowers' sign-up. Serving coffee is easy, and we will be glad to go through it with anyone interested.
We would like to express a sincere "Thank You!" to the great folks who have volunteered to provide coffee after Sunday service.

Strategic Planning
|
After presenting both at the Coordinating Council as well as the UUCG Board of Trustees in August 2015, the Strategic Planning Committee will present the results of the first survey to the congregation during our congregational meeting on November 1, 2015. The answers of the first survey indicate that UUCG currently is in a safe and comfortable place. Now we want to shift gears with a second set of questions that will serve as a measure of how our answers change as we are thinking into the future of our congregation. We will start distributing the second survey at the congregational meeting. If you have questions about this, please contact Katja Brown.

Ladies' Night Out
Ladies are invited to our monthly Vietnamese dinner at the Saigon Restaurant the last Monday of the month -- Oct. 26. We meet at 6:30 p.m. If we have ten or more, we have the option of having the chef prepare a communal meal for us. It's a lively evening of table discussion, laughter and getting to know more about each other. Newcomers are always welcome. If you plan to attend please contact Mary Davis (586-0188) or Janet Plummer (294-6364).
Men's Night Out
Join us the 2nd Monday of the month -- Oct. 12 -- at 6 p.m. at Villarosa, 6010 Landmark Center Blvd, Greensboro, near I-40 and Wendover. We also meet on the last Monday of each month at Applebee's on Battleground Avenue at 6 p.m.

Faith Formation
|
Adult Faith Formation October 4: The Healthy Congregation Committee will continue their series of classes focusing on Compassionate Communications. This month we will be looking at Compassion as a Spiritual Practice. October 11 and 18: Ken Knight will continue his examination of The How of Happiness. Reading the book is not a requirement of the class. October 25: Tom Burwell will begin a series of classes drawing from a variety of sources. The idea that "society's problems need market solutions" presupposes that people are essentially just "rational-economic-actors". This class will study the opposite hypothesis -- that certain group-level problems in today's world require group-level solutions. The class will start by looking at Blake's and Shelley's dissent to the "Age of Reason" that dominated 17th and 18th century thought, move into a discussion of dreams and the "birth" of psychology as an independent field of knowledge, and end with a discussion of the overlap between psychology and economics. November 1: As we move towards elections, this seems a good time to explore what Compassionate Communications might offer us in dealing with our "Enemy Images". Who are YOUR enemy images? Justice Action Team Update |
Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry
On the first Monday of each month, a group of volunteers from our church prepares and serves supper to the residents of the Urban Ministry shelter.
For the past couple of months, we have had a small number of volunteers show up. We need some new workers, especially younger ones, to be part of this important contribution to the welfare of some or our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.
Food Drive
There will be another opportunity to help Greensboro Urban Ministry to feed the hungry on Saturday, October 10, 2015 at the Food Lion store at 4653 West Market Street. The food drive will need 8 volunteers, 2 volunteers to work each 2 hour shift, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect nonperishable goods from the patrons of the store. Please contact Becky Floyd at 336-852-3592 or rfloyd2@triad.rr.com to volunteer. Your help is greatly appreciated.
TAKING IT T-UU THE STREETS This year, we are taking a different approach to this project by rotating through the age-groups/classes. This month, our oldest group, "Circle of Youth," will assemble carebags for the needy on Sunday, October 11, as our monthly justice action project. Please consider donating non-perishable individual food and hygiene items to the collection basket in the lobby. If you (or someone you know) travels, please gather the soaps, etc. and donate them to the lobby basket. Financial donations are also welcome to help purchase materials for the carebags. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
Share the Plate: October
Donations will be given to the Animal Rescue and Foster Program
CROP Walk
Sunday afternoon October 18
Grasshopper Stadium
UUCG choir will again open the walk with the National Anthem. Gather with other UUs about 1:30 near the choir. Many will be wearing their Standing on the Side of Love shirts so you can't miss them. You can purchase a CROP Walk 2015 shirt if you wish.
You can sign up to walk or make a donation at the Justice Action table after service on Sundays. Stop at the table to pick up your pledge packet so you can start soliciting other members and your friends. Or even better, get your friends to walk with you.
If no walker has asked you for a pledge, you can make a donation at the JAT table. Remember that 25% of the funds raised by the CROP Walk will go to the Greensboro Urban Ministry to feed hungry people right here at home.
Community Housing Solutions
Saturday November 14 is the day! Join other UUs to repair a house working with Community Housing Solutions. This non-profit organization works to keep homeowners in their homes. These homeowners are often disabled or elderly and unable to complete or finance repairs. Jobs include carpentry, simple installations, lawn work, and cleaning. CHS furnishes all the tools, but you can bring a favorite hammer or rake! T eams from our church have worked on three homes and found it fulfilling and a great way to feel closer to other church members. The day usually begins around 8:30 and runs until 2:30 or 3:00. If you can work just a few hours, we'll welcome you! Lunch will be provided.
You can sign up at the Justice Action table any Sunday in October. If you are unable to work, the team will appreciate snacks and brownies. Just put down your name!
Contact Carla Duncan or Sara Bourquin for additional information, or see us on Sunday morning.
Peanut Butter Alert
Thanks to everyone at the Unitarian Universalist Church who contributed to the 85 pounds of peanut butter and nonperishable food collected last month for the Greensboro Food Bank. You are greatly appreciated! Becky Floyd

Healthy Congregation Committee |
The Board has approved the Complaint Response Policy drafted by the Healthy Congregations Committee, and the Committee is now writing the specific procedures to go along with the policy. Underpinning our work is the belief that most of the time, issues can best be resolved by direct conversation between the individuals involved, but that there may be times when it is necessary to ask a disinterested party to assist. That's where we will come in: our committee members have been called in a few times this past year, and stand ready to advise or to provide assistance if necessary. We believe that everyone has the right to be seen and heard, but acknowledge that there may be times when, in the end, not everyone is satisfied with the outcome. If you are facing a situation in church that you feel could benefit from our assistance, please feel free to contact any member of our committee.

Board of Trustees
|
Highlights of the September 16, 2015 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting - Karen Madrone, President, reported on efforts to find a chair for Human Resources Committee. The Accountability Committee and Developmental Ministry Team will meet to discuss progress on the Developmental Ministry.
- Lonnie Houck presented the Treasurer's report. All the money in the Memorial Garden Fund has been used, so donations are being sought. Work has begun on the bio retention cell, and half the minimum expense, $4,700, has been paid. Pledge income received through August was up by $10,386 compared to July. Delta (income - expense) through August is positive.
- Rev. Ann Marie Alderman noted that weekly email announcements have started going out on Thursday, rather than Tuesday. She noted that sending a message to the forum yahoo group does not reach all members. A better method would be to include the message in the weekly email announcements.
- Michelle Lee, Policies and Procedures Chair, provided copies and a review of the P & P outline from the Board policy book. She gave background and discussed policies that need to be created or updated, encouraging each Board member to choose one or more to work on.
- Robert Gretton reported that Finance Committee is developing a long term capital expenditure plan. In addition, the Finance Committee has worked with the company that owns the church's timeshare to change our week from April to February. This is assumed to be a better week to auction it off. Karen Madrone and Sharin Francis will sign the required documents.
- Last month there was a vote to create a task force to help develop a policy about how to respond to smoking. Next month the board will review a proposed charter for this taskforce. Cindy Williams has agreed to be on this taskforce.
- Karen will appoint Lonnie Houck as Board member to fill the vacancy created by Robin Lewis' August 19 resignation. Lonnie will serve in this role from the end of the 60 days vacancy until the congregational meeting on November 1st.
The next Board meeting will be Thursday, October 15, at 7:00 pm and is open to all. Submitted by Sharin Francis
