Inspirations
|
We draw from many wells, From oceans and rivers, From lakes and streams, From the muddy Mississippi to the roaring Rio Grande, From faraway places and from the ponds and puddles in our own backyards. Yet all are refreshing, each rivulet is cleansing, each capable of nurturing and sustaining life. As people of faith, we draw inspiration from many sources: From earth and sky, From poetry and legend, From art and music, From conscience and the law written in our own hearts. Each satisfying our deep thirst for meaning And the yearning for justice that rolls down like waters in the soul. Gary Kowalski

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

For years, Unitarian Universalist churches have started the "church year" with a water communion. This ritual usually happens in early September. In the past, it has been partially based on the assumption that many regular attenders take a vacation from church during the summers to return when school starts. I don't think that is true at UUCG! We seem to have the same amount of people in worship services year round. Yet, I do see again and again that exactly who is present each Sunday is different from the last Sunday. Those who come are members, plus first time guests, plus regular visitors, and every Sunday a different set of people are present than every other Sunday, and certainly there is a different set of people from any one given Sunday in one year, to the next year on the same Sunday. It is for that reason that I like to think of water communion as more of a continual acknowledgement that the body of who we are is re-constituted, re-formed, refreshed...all the time and we merely pausing in September to acknowledge that!
When you get ready for church on September 13, bring some water. If you have been doing this ritual for years and remembered to gather water from wherever you may have gone this summer, bring that. If you stayed home or nearby, bring water from your back yard or your faucet. If you forget altogether, no worries, there will be plenty of water available for you! At UUCG all are welcome, all the time, from wherever you have come. Whether or not you have been coming for years, or this next time is your first time, you are welcome to our open and inviting and refreshing water communion!
Yours in faith,
Rev. Ann Marie

September is always an exciting time. It brings closure to summer programming, while bringing promise to new classes. I'm happy to share with you our 2015-2016 YRE schedule, and hope that those who are willing and able will step into the YRE volunteer fold:
Sundays 9:30-10:30am, concurrent w/Adult RE
CHALICE CLUB (Pre-K thru 5th grade) This children's fellowship gathering is switching gears from the previous years' model of bead-earning towards experiencing (and even creating) UU games. And it's a perfect fit for those who are torn between choir and YRE...you can have the best of both UUCG worlds!
Sundays 10:55am-12:00pm, beginning in the worship service
UU BIBLE/UU TALES (Pre-K thru 1st Grade) This class will explore seminal Bible and UU stories, building a foundation on which to build strong UUs.
SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE (2nd thru 5th Grade) A curriculum designed for active children, we will encounter the stories of our UU forebears, from Fannie Farmer to P.T. Barnum.
THE SIMPSONS & UU (Middle School) Our older children will view key episodes of the TV series, "The Simpsons" that address various ideas surrounding religion, supported by creator Mark Pinsky's discussion guide, "The Gospel According to the Simpsons."
CIRCLE WORSHIP (High School) Following the UU model of Circle Worship, our youth will experience fellowship, pursue spiritual questions they generate, and experiment with joining the larger life of our church.
We have been greatly blessed this past year with a growth in YRE-but the plans listed here will only come to fruition with volunteer teacher support. Please consider becoming part of a teaching team for one of these classes. Teacher training will be offered Saturday, Sept. 12, 9am-2pm at UUCG, with breakfast and lunch provided. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard Director YRE (uucgre@att.net).
NEW NURSERY STAFF
Tenisha McBride joined UUCG's Nursery Staff last month. Originally from New York, she has lived in Greensboro for the past seven years. She shares a home with her boyfriend, Antwan, son Amarion (6) and daughter Monica (4). In recent years, she has cared for neighbors and friends' children, as well as her own, and looks forward to gaining more experience supporting young children. She also hopes to return to school soon to study psychology. If you see Tenisha -- either in the nursery or in the hallways -- please give her a warm welcome.
ALL-CHURCH POTLUCK Join us in the YRE wing Sunday, September 20, after church for a potluck lunch. Beverages and eating-ware will be provided. For more information, contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net)

Healthy Leadership 101
The members of UUCG's board of trustees spent part of this summer participating in an online course through the UU Leadership Institute. The board learned more about how a congregation functions as an interconnected system of relationships. The title of the 9-module course was "Healthy Leadership 101."
Through presentations, readings, and videos, participants explored the importance of purpose, diversity, and differentiation. Healthy leaders ...
- accept differences flexibly and creatively,
- lead from a place of strength and purpose rather than getting bogged down by disappointments,
- balance their human desire for both close relationship and independence,
- both challenge and empower others with grace and authenticity,
- function as part of a leadership team, and
- maintain their center while leading through change and conflict.
Please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like to talk more about healthy leadership at UUCG.

Chalice Circles Accepting New Members
|
Anyone who wishes to join a Chalice Circle can do so during the "open" period this September. Please fill out a form at http://tinyurl.com/puyh6pa to let us know of your interest. The circles at UUCG are similar to covenant groups or small group ministry found in other congregations. All Chalice Circle members are asked to commit to attend as many of the monthly meetings as they possibly can, as the goal of these circles is to provide a place to have conversations of depth regarding spiritual topics in a circle of trust.
All the leaders have been trained by Rev. Ann Marie to keep the conversations focused, rich and hopefully rewarding for all the participants. If you are interested in being with a small group of committed people every month for the next year, where you may develop relationships where honest reflection take place in a space where all spiritual journeys are respected and have worth, please fill out the form. This year there will also be an opportunity to join an online group if that works for enough people.

Board of Trustees

Highlights of the August 20, 2015 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
-
Karen Madrone, President, reported that she will give the September 13 sermon for UUs in Covenant, who will also collaborate with us on September 19 for Greensboro Pride.
-
Lonnie Houck, Chair of Bylaws Task Force, presented and reviewed the final version of proposed bylaw changes. Following discussion, the Board approved the changes to be recommended for a vote at the November 1 Congregational Meeting.
-
Katja Brown, Strategic Planning Chair, and Lonnie Houck, used a Power Point presentation to review themes that emerged from congregational listening circles held earlier in the year. Word clouds were created from participants' responses to three questions: What does UUCG mean t o you? How does UUCG affect your life? Why is this important? The next step in strategic planning will invite congregational input in articulating where UUCG wants to be in seven years.
-
Michelle Lee, Vice President, reviewed the Committee Report Summary from the August quarterly meeting of the Coordinating Council.
-
The Board approved the appointment of Ann Dickinson as Chair of Annual Commitment Time (ACT) Committee, as well as nomination of other Board committee chairs who have agreed to serve for the 2015-16 year.
-
Robin Lewis has resigned from the Board, due to increased responsibilities at her job.
-
Michelle Lee, Policies and Procedures Chair, presented the Safe Congregation Policy and the Complaint Response Policy, both of which were accepted after slight modifications.
-
Michelle Lee, Labyrinth Team Lead, reported that the outdoor worship space is completed and ready for addition of the Labyrinth. The contractor wrote off $4,500 of his fee. A policy for the Columbarium is needed.
-
Susan Hill, Treasurer, reviewed Treasurer's reports. Pledge income received through July was $545 or 4% over year to date budget. July expenses were higher due to air conditioner repair and staff professional development expenses, both posted in July.
-
There was further discussion of guidelines for UUCG's policy about onsite smoking. Agreeing that it is not the Board's wish to exclude smokers, the Board approved a motion to create a task force to develop details about how to respond to smoking.
The next Board meeting will be Wednesday, September 16, at 7 pm and is open to all.

Community Events |
Greensboro Pride Events This year, UUCG is hosting the annual Greensboro Pride Worship Service on Thursday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m.
Greensboro Pride will be held on Sept.19 at South Elm Street between Market and Greene streets. This year UUCG's booth will be joined by members of UUs in Covenant and UU Fellowship of Winston-Salem. We are absolutely thrilled for new relationships being created through this opportunity. Please consider serving a shift at Greensboro Pride. Even though we now have marriage equality in the U.S., discrimination still exists, glbtq youth are still homeless, and people are still being kicked out of their families. Unitarian Universalism is a message of hope, love, and acceptance for everyone. This is a great opportunity to share the loving message of Unitarian Universalism in our community. To sign up for a shift at Greensboro Pride, go to: https://doodle.com/275mqtpgcki686rw. If you have any questions about UUCG's participation in Greensboro Pride, please see Rev. Ann Marie or Karen Madrone.
