Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

I have been asked why a UUCG member or friend would want to attend the Southeast District Assembly. I can think of several ways to answer that question!
1. Because UUCG is hosting! That means that delegates from all over the Southeast District, which includes UU congregations in Virginia, North and South Carolina, coastal Georgia and middle and eastern Tennessee, will be here in Greensboro in our building. Wouldn't it be great if you got to meet other UUs without having to travel out of town and they got to meet and talk with you?
2. When you asked me to be your Developmental Minister two years ago, you said you wanted me to help you feel more in alignment with your UU identity! Attending a District Assembly is one way to see UUism in action. From voting to singing to learning something new to conversation with others who are "evangelizing the South", you will experience what makes UUs tick!
3. Exciting changes have been happening in and for all the districts that comprise the Southern Region. The Southern Region includes the Southeast District, the Mid-South District, the Florida District and Southwest Conference. Every one of these districts that comprise the Southern Region will be holding their Assemblies at the same time so that Live Feed technology can be used to simultaneously hear some of our speakers, including the UUA President Peter Morales. There may be a very important vote that is likely to significantly alter why or if the Southeast District board exists. If the vote is favorable, it will reflect a change in governance that has been studied and advanced for the last four years, ever since the seminal document, "The Orlando Platform" was published.
4. Until the end of my second term, which was just a year ago, I served as a district trustee for six years. I have been a witness to and participated in rapid and exciting changes. Now, I am on the Regional Congregational Life Advisory Council, and thus your Ambassador for all things related to linking the stakeholders and the congregations of the Southeast District and the Southern Region to the UUA.
5. This is likely to be the most important District Assembly since the Southeast District adopted its current name. That may not sound very significant if you don't follow district and/or regional news, but governance changes that allow our middle judicatory to be nimble and responsive and fair to all member congregations affects you!
See you Friday evening, April 17 and Saturday, April 18. Register here
Yours in faith,
Rev. Ann Marie

Passover Seder April 11
I greet this time of year with joy and appreciation for its many rituals signaling renewal and moving forward. But I am also put in mind of the past and the many wonderful times spent with family and friends celebrating these rituals. Some of these times were unique to my family, such as holding an egg-butting contest after we kids found all the eggs. Other memories are of communal celebrations steeped in tradition, such as our Flower Communion and the Passover Seder.
Please join me and Mark Freundt for a UU Passover Seder on Saturday, April 11 at 6:00 pm. Experience traditional seder foods, learn the Exodus story through a new lens, and create some new memories with your UUCG family.
Cost: $10 per adult, $5 per child (5+). Anyone interested in helping-and please don't be prohibited by cost- contact Cindy Dillard, UUCG Director of YRE via (email) uucgre@att.net OR (cell) 614-975-0126.

Ministry & Governance 101
UUCG does two kinds of work, ministry and governance.
Ministry happens when we implement our mission and serve each other and our neighbors. Sometimes we call this, "the work of the church". Ministry includes programs, operations and staff. At UUCG, the minister is chief of operations, chief of staff, and in charge of ministry. Our minister supervises staff and volunteers serving in workgroups called ministry teams. Two examples are the worship team and the pastoral care team. Ministry teams have outcomes that are frequent, usually weekly. Team volunteers are supported by the minister and paid staff to assure that time-sensitive work is happening consistently and well.
Governance happens when we maintain the organization. Sometimes we call this "church work". Governance includes fiduciary, strategic, and generative work. Fiduciary work is overseeing assets such as the building and budget. Strategic work is planning for the long term. Generative work is when we consider new ways of being, and big picture questions such as, "who are we; what difference do we make; and for whom?" At UUCG, the president and board of trustees are responsible for this work. The board of trustees oversees volunteer work groups called governance committees. Two examples are the finance committee and the accountability committee. Governance committees have outcomes that are infrequent, usually monthly or even annually. Committee volunteers are supported by the board of trustees. Monthly meetings of the board of trustees assure appropriate (not daily or weekly) supervision of committee volunteers.
At UUCG, our intention is to have healthy governance that supports a larger, thriving ministry. Understanding what is governance and what is ministry prevents internal conflict and encourages collaboration. Ministry teams and governance committees communicate informally as needed and formally at quarterly coordinating council meetings. The minister and board of trustees work together, advising, encouraging and assisting.
Please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like to talk more about ministry and governance.

Coming Soon: UUCG Story Jam! |
Good friends enrich our lives at all ages, especially if they are from diverse backgrounds that broaden our personal world.
In May UUCG will sponsor a storytelling project affirming intercultural friendships that culminates in a STORY JAM on Saturday evening, May 30, when youth and adults will tell brief personal stories describing "A Good Friend Not Like Me."
Charlotte Hamlin and Marie Houck will lead a preparatory session for youth (May 17) and adults (May 24) to develop a five-minute story that celebrates a special friendship to be shared at the STORY JAM. Drawing on this pilot project, they will lead a workshop at General Assembly in Portland, Ore. in late June.
Get ready to tell yUUr story!

Pastoral Care |
The Buddy System
Do you live alone? Do you connect every day with a family member? Do you have a "Life Alert" system?
Why do we ask these questions? Because stuff happens especially as we age; strokes; heart attacks; TIAs (mini-strokes); vertigo etc.
A friend of mine recently died because he fell at his home, and went undiscovered for four days.
He spent nine days in ICU and they worked unceasingly, trying to hydrate, and medicate his body to normal function, but it was not enough and he died from multiple organ failure caused by dehydration.
Had he heeded advice to have a system; or had friends and family followed up with more urgency on un-returned calls ---he may still be a registered voter!
Could this happen to you? Your Pastoral Care Team here at UUCG would like to help you prevent it.
By organizing a "Buddy System" we want to help you establish daily contact with someone else, i.e. family or fellow congregant. If you do not reply to a daily call, we will contact emergency services to come to your rescue.
If you live in a retirement community, the staff takes care of these matters. If you utilize in-home care;
or get Meals on Wheels, again staff is alert for non-responsiveness. But there are many of us who maintain our independence and are proud of it---or maybe just stubborn?
So we urge folks who live alone, to contact the church office. Your request to be part of the "buddy system" will be directed to the Pastoral Care Team, and you will be contacted to discuss and implement, this very important aspect of our commitment to each other's safety and peace of mind.

Healthy Congregations Committee
|
Congregational Checkup
The Healthy Congregation Committee is charged with periodically evaluating the overall health of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Greensboro. It has been an interesting challenge to figure out how to measure health! There are some objective factors we can look at: Are we financially healthy? Do visitors stick around? How are our membership numbers doing? Those objective measures are important, but just as important are the feelings and attitudes of those in the congregation. These are obviously subjective, but our plan is to attempt to evaluate that by interviewing a selection of congregants. The questions we will use are listed below.
We are working with Rev. Ann Marie to develop the list of specific individuals to interview. Our intent is to get a good cross section of the congregation. However, if you are not one of the people we will be interviewing, but you have something you would like to add, please feel free to talk to one of the members of the Healthy Congregations Committee: Larry Graham, Phoenix Putney, Donya Lucas, Sue Beck, Bill Haney, Becky Floyd, and me.
I am looking forward to seeing what we will learn from conducting these interviews.
- Is our congregation developing new leaders, and how are we doing that?
- Do people willingly step into volunteer positions?
- What do you know about our congregation's finances, and how do you feel about how we're doing?
- How would you describe the overall morale of our congregation?
- Do you enthusiastically invite others to our worship services?
- What do we do to attract young adult (18-35 year olds) newcomers?
- Are people in leadership roles given support, encouragement and resources?
- What have you seen that demonstrates our congregation's ministry to its children and families?
- Do you get enough information here to be comfortable talking to other people about our Unitarian Universalist faith?
- How does this congregation encourage us to live our Unitarian Universalist principles?
- Are you aware of any current conflicts, and if you are, do you believe they are being addressed effectively?

Justice Action Team Update |
Taking it T-UU The Streets
Gene Nichol, the director of Chapel Hill's Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity, recently stated that "Poverty is North Carolina's greatest challenge."
He said that "in one of the most economically vibrant states of the richest nation on earth, 18 percent of us live in wrenching poverty. Twenty-five percent of our kids. Forty percent of our children of color. We have one of the country's fastest rising poverty rates."
UUs have long been on the path of working towards social justice. And in trying to address this issue of poverty and in some small way trying to take care of the most needy among us, UUCG's YRE program embarked on a monthly carebag assembling project, Taking It T-UU The Streets (TTS).
Over the past two years, our congregation has supported this YRE effort through material and financial donations-and more importantly, by picking up a carebag or two each month, and making a big leap over the comfort zone by personally reaching out to someone in need. Please consider contributing to this ongoing effort: materially, financially, or through an act of kindness by reaching out with a bag of caring.
YRE classes will next be assembling carebags on Sunday, April 12. Contributions are welcome in the TTS basket in the lobby or by contacting Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
Food Drive Volunteers Needed
The approval from Food Lion is here, and there will finally be another opportunity to help Greensboro Urban Ministry feed the hungry on Saturday, April 11 at the Food Lion store at 4653 West Market Street. The food drive will need eight volunteers: two volunteers to work each two-hour shift, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect nonperishable goods from the patrons of the store. Please emailt Becky Floyd or call her at 336-852-3592 to volunteer. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry
On the first Monday of each month, a group of volunteers from our church prepares and serves supper to the residents of the Urban Ministry shelter.
For the past couple of months, we have had a small number of volunteers show up. We need some new workers, especially younger ones to be part of this important contribution to the welfare of some or our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.
Home Repair with CHS The Justice Action Team of UUCG will partner with Community Housing Solutions to help make homes in Greensboro warmer, drier, and safer and to keep families in their homes. We will participate again repairing a home on Saturday, April 25. Here is just a brief description of Community Housing Solutions: "Our home repair program preserves homeownership for low-income families who cannot financially or physically do the repairs themselves . . . . . We rely heavily upon the support of volunteers and donors." Beginning mid-March there will be a Justice Action Team table after service where you can obtain more information on CHS and this project. You can sign up to do the physical repair work or help with planning and lunch arrangements. Carla Duncan is the UUCG team leader, and she can tell you all about working on CHS projects. She has worked! Email her at Carla Duncan. Save April 25 for a wonderful day of teamwork! Our workday will end at 3:30 - we'll be home in time to rest and get ready for the Missa Gaia performance that evening.
Share the Plate for April
Donations will be given to Environmental Stewardship Greensboro.
Peanut Butter Alert
Thanks to everyone at the Unitarian Universalist Church who contributed to
the 86 pounds of peanut butter and nonperishable food collected last month for the Greensboro Food Bank. You are greatly appreciated! Becky Floyd

Highlights of the March 19, 2015 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
- Rev. Ann Marie Alderman encouraged Board members to register before March 30 for the Annual District Assembly which UUCG is hosting on April 17 and 18. The website is http://www.uuasouthernregion.org/aa2015.html
- Rev. Ann Marie went to Birmingham March 5-7 for the Marching in the Arc of Justice Conference and then to Selma for the 50th anniversary observance of the march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge. She briefly recounted some highlights from the weekend shared with about 500 UUs, including some of our own UUCG members. For more details and to hear the presentations given during the conference, visit http://www.uulivinglegacy.org/marching-in-the-arc.html
- Karen Madrone, President, noted the Southeast District Chalice Lighter program is honoring the 50th anniversary of Selma by offering three $5,000 grants to churches in the Southern Region to "fund a project that addresses anti-racism/anti-oppression social justice work". The deadline to apply for a grant is April 15. Karen and Rev. Ann Marie have begun dialogue about whether UUCG should apply and what we would like to accomplish with the funds.
- As chair of Policies and Procedures Committee, Michelle Lee, presented for discussion a draft of the Safe Congregation Policy, as well as the P & P report and some explanatory background. Extensive time and research have resulted in much progress on this document, but several details still need to be worked out.
- Lonnie Houck, Treasurer, reported that income is ahead of expenses, year to date by $10,624 due to the income from the Cabaret Auction. February pledges were up by about $1,400 compared to January.
- There was discussion about the ACT campaign and budget timeline. March 23 - April 9 will be the final wrap up of collecting pledges, so the finance committee can prepare the final draft of the proposed budget for Board review on April 21.
- The Congregation will vote on the final version of the proposed 2015-16 budget at the Annual meeting on Sunday, May 17.
- Voting on the proposed bylaw revisions will be moved to a Congregational meeting in October. The board did not want to have the proposed change take effect immediately on passing, thereby changing how many board positions would be open in the next part of the meeting. New language for the bylaws revision needs to be created for the October meeting to take effect in May 2016.
- More details are available in reports posted at the UUCG website http://uugreensboro.org/for-members/members-only/ Go to "Board Reports 14-15" in March.
- The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, April 21 at 7 pm and is open to all.
