Inspirations
|
"As spiritual searchers we need to become freer and freer of the attachment to our own smallness in which we get occupied with me-me-me. Pondering on large ideas or standing in front of things which remind us of a vast scale can free us from acquisitiveness and competitiveness and from our likes and dislikes. If we sit with an increasing stillness of the body, and attune our mind to the sky or to the ocean or to the myriad stars at night, or any other indicators of vastness, the mind gradually stills and the heart is filled with quiet joy. Also recalling our own experiences in which we acted generously or with compassion for the simple delight of it without expectation of any gain can give us more confidence in the existence of a deeper goodness from which we may deviate. Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

As I consider generosity, this month's theme, I can't help but be reminded of a line from Marianne Williamson; "your playing small does not serve the world".
Like most everyone, I have had times in my life when I played small. I think shame caused that. Or fear. Whatever the cause, I know I used to worry a lot. (I still do, a little!) I often obsessed about getting my equal share. Sometimes I also worried about giving what was fair.
When someone would come along asking me to contribute to a cause, even one I believed in, I would worry that giving would mean I would have to spend less on something else. And, worrying that I ought not benefit from whatever the cause was that was asking me to give or give more, I would withdraw from participating. Those kind of worrying ways of calculating costs are me-me-me accounting. Now I know there is another way to be.
I live with a person who is generous (perhaps to a fault!) Asked to give, she gives. I have observed that there is a very different sort of accounting that happens when one practices generosity. It is not the me-me-me version, and it is certainly not about worrying. What I have seen is that when generosity is at play every act of giving, regardless of whether it is financial, an act of kindness, or a magnanimous thought is not matched by a return of equal or fair measure! Rather, again and again, I have seen and experienced that open-hearted and open-handed generosity actually yields a return far beyond the value of the original gift. There are countless, vast benefits to be had from the practice of generosity.
I have experienced the benefits coming my way enough now to convince me it now makes sense to have complete confidence in the vastness of being. If I let go of my fear and take a move away from my obsessions, my bottom line yield a profit that is full of riches beyond calculations. Giving with a generous spirit means, believing in the "indicators of vastness", has moved me and can move you to a new kind of wisdom, a new form of "accounting". My indicators are not necessarily the stars at night, or the sky. It is not always in sitting still when I contemplate the results of generosity.
I see "vastness of being" within UUCG! You have been generous to a FIND (rather than a fault!), these last few years. You have been on the move. Over and over, Sunday after Sunday sharing half. Over and over families with children coming in and finding what they need because you provide it. You sing joyfully. You share and you care. We all keep building hopeful, healing community together. Out in the hurting world we make a difference, re-building homes, offering bags of necessaries and offering both tangible and intangible hope.
Pledging is an act of generosity. It is not about me-me-me accounting or about playing small. It is about continuing to become the great church, the beloved community, the ones who together trusting the vastness of all that we can be. It is about practicing generosity to a fault (or a find!)
Yours in faith,
Rev. Ann Marie

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Weather permitting, our YRE classes inevitably end up outside on the playground. It is a wonderful sight to behold, children young and old chasing each other in a game of tag or checking out some cool insect. And when the service is over, parents start trickling out to pick up their kids and enjoy a few moments of the joyful chaos. At this time, it is not uncommon for parents to check in with me to see what was taught in the classrooms. "I ask what happened in class, and they can never tell me," is a common refrain.
While I assure you that every class has a curriculum and a lesson plan with a topic and story and activity, here's what our children are absolutely learning each time they come to church: that they are a part of our beloved community. They learn that whether they are four or 10, they are all welcome to the conversation. Each Sunday, they begin by renewing their covenant with one another and by welcoming the newcomer. Through sharing stones, they learn to listen to one another and to share their ideas (and to support social justice if they brought a quarter or a dollar). Through cooperative games, they learn that everyone is valued. Through our closing words and song, they learn the comfort of ritual. And they might just learn a few concepts on top of that! But regardless of what your children remember from class, please know that they are indeed learning lifelong skills and values.
New Nursery Staffer
Lindsey Curtis joined our nursery staff this past week. She will be mainly working on Sundays, but also anytime childcare is needed.
Lindsey, 21, is a student at Guilford Technical Community College. She recently moved here from New Jersey.

From the Congregational President Karen Madrone
|
This month's board meeting was focused on several projects we have coming up and that are ongoing. At this year's Annual Meeting in May, we will have a vote on several changes to the bylaws. These changes will make the bylaws less redundant, address issues of how the settled minister search committee will be formed, reduce the size of the Board to increase leadership potential for ministry teams, increase the quorum required for approving a settled minister, and change the wording so that a mortgage refinance does not need to be approved by the congregation unless it is $10,000 over the current mortgage. Lonnie Houck, Jim Kalinowski and Laura Graham are serving on the Bylaws Taskforce. I encourage you to talk to them about the proposed changes if you have questions.
We also heard from the Directed Gifts Taskforce about their plans for creating a labyrinth and columbarium. We look forward to their plans coming to fruition in the future. For questions about these plans please talk to Ken Williams, Jim Roeder and Rod Swonguer.
Recently the church was approached by Verizon about the possibility of leasing some of our property to them for a cell tower. This is an opportunity for additional income for the church. We are still in the investigation process at this time and hope to be able to vote on this at the Annual Meeting in May. Lonnie Houck, Ken Williams and Julie Hamilton will continue gathering information about this.
Last but not least we talked about the Annual Commitment Time (ACT)/pledge campaign for this year. The ACT Committee presented the board with a schedule for the spring campaign that will help us stay on track for presenting the budget at the Annual Meeting (noticing a theme here?).
The ACT Committee pledge campaign will not only focus on expanding the ongoing work of the ministry teams but will begin to set aside funds for a future settled minister search as well. For UUCG to be in a position to do a settled minister search in the near future, we need to have set aside funds to cover these expenses. We have a wonderful Developmental Minister now in Rev. Ann Marie but we need to be prepared for calling a settled minister in the near future.
During March there will be testimonies given at the Sunday services about personal giving. I will be giving my personal testimony on March 1st about why I give to UUCG. I hope that by listening to personal testimonies, you will give consideration to why you give to UUCG as well. I'm looking forward to our conversations about living generously.
Each of the board committees and task forces work well together for an integrated whole. Each part has its role and together we are creating a beautiful present and future.
Contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you have questions about these or other matters related to furthering the mission of UUCG.

DINNER CIRCLES FOR FEBRUARY THROUGH APRIL
During the past few months, about 30 members of UUCG have enjoyed dining together in each others' homes, sharing the food preparation, the enjoyment of the meal, and much excellent conversation and laughter. That was round one, and you're invited for a second round to be held from February through April.
This is a great way to get to know your fellow UUCGers better! The second round will have new groupings and hosts. Contact: Kay Bishop or Rick Tolley at 336-285-6761 or kbooklover@gmail.com.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING |
Leadership skills are crucial in both our professional and personal lives. These skills empower us to focus energy, keep a discussion on topic, turn disagreement into consensus and motivate and support others toward a common goal.
On Saturday afternoon, March 28th, from 1-5 p.m., UUCG members and friends are invited to a workshop sponsored by the Committee on Leadership which will explore empowering leadership and how spiritual development can be a central aspect of leadership for individuals and groups. Using interactive exercises, this "Lay Leadership: Finding the Power of YOU and UUCG" workshop will explore leadership theory and how individual differences in psychological and communication styles impact groups. In a comfortable climate, participants will explore strategies to build community and broaden UUCG leadership using Compassionate Communication principles. Rev. Alderman and UUCG leaders will take part in the workshop.
Participating in this workshop is a great way to develop leadership within our congregation and the community. Whether you have much to learn or much to share, this is an opportunity to lift each other up and to strengthen our abilities to serve our congregation and grow spiritually. Child care will be provided. Address questions to Charlotte Hamlin or Donya Lucas and sign up on the poster in the hallway by the kitchen to join us on March 28th.

Taking It T-UU The Streets
The Searchers will assemble carebags for the needy during class on Sunday, March 7. Especially needed at this time of year are socks, tissues and lip balm. Please donate these items (as well as individual non-perishable food and hygiene items) to the collection basket in the lobby. Financial support also helps in the purchasing of necessary items. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
Food Drive Volunteers Needed
The approval from Food Lion is here, and there will finally be another opportunity to help Greensboro Urban Ministry feed the hungry on Saturday, April 11 at the Food Lion store at 4653 West Market Street. The food drive will need eight volunteers: two volunteers to work each two-hour shift, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect nonperishable goods from the patrons of the store. Please emailt Becky Floyd or call her at 336-852-3592 to volunteer. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry
On the first Monday of each month, a group of volunteers from our church prepares and serves supper to the residents of the Urban Ministry shelter.
For the past couple of months, we have had a small number of volunteers show up. We need some new workers, especially younger ones to be part of this important contribution to the welfare of some or our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.
Home Repair with CHS The Justice Action Team of UUCG will partner with Community Housing Solutions to help make homes in Greensboro warmer, drier, and safer and to keep families in their homes. We will participate again repairing a home on Saturday, April 25. Here is just a brief description of Community Housing Solutions:"Our home repair program preserves homeownership for low-income families who cannot financially or physically do the repairs themselves . . . . . We rely heavily upon the support of volunteers and donors. " Beginning mid-March there will be a Justice Action Team table after service where you can obtain more information on CHS and this project. You can sign up to do the physical repair work or help with planning and lunch arrangements. Carla Duncan is the UUCG team leader, and she can tell you all about working on CHS projects. She has worked! Email her at Carla Duncan. Save April 25 for a wonderful day of teamwork! Our workday will end at 3:30 - we'll be home in time to rest and get ready for the Missa Gaia performance that evening.
