Bylaws Change Town Hall meeting - Sunday, Feb. 1 at 12:15 p.m.  Please attend this informational meeting and discussion concerning UUCG's bylaws and possible changes.

The Bylaws Task Force is reviewing existing bylaws, getting input and feedback from members of our congregation, and making recommendations for improvements.  This will align our bylaws with best practices and the mission of the congregation.  Changes may include how we create the Committee on Search, whether we should reduce the size of the Board of Trustees, how we approve refinancing the mortgage, and other needed updates.  Any changes will require congregational approval.  A vote is scheduled for the annual meeting in May.

The Bylaws Task Force members are Lonnie Houck (chair), Jim Kalinowski, and Laura Graham.

Inspirations

For the truth is that in the end loyalty is never an attachment to something external so much as it is an allegiance to something inside yourself.  That which commands you outwardly has first possessed you inwardly.

That is why a bad human being is never a reliable patriot, nor a good human being a bad citizen.  There is no surer test than this: Your loyalty will always be to what you secretly love and serve.

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

Some UUCG'ers think of February as the most exciting month of the church year!  Why is that, you say?  There is a lot going on including the fabulous Cabaret Auction.  Not only is it the biggest fundraiser of the year, with both a silent and a live auction. ...it is FUN!

Lauren Houck is in charge again this year of the auction itself, with co-chairs Rissa Tuttle and Robin Lewis.  Laura Graham is ably overseeing food, and  the ever-entertaining Charlotte Hamlin is bringing on the talent.  I have to say I have never met a church auction I didn't enjoy, but this one at UUCG takes the cake!

Please, please, please mark your calendars for February 21.  Show up at 6:00 p.m. for a night of FUN!  Be ready to leave with many things of great value.  From a date for a dinner with friends while one of UUCG's chefs does the gourmet cooking, to a handcrafted gift for your next party, you are sure to bid on and win something you just have to have!  And, I promise you will be entertained at the same time!

The other thing going on that I still excited about is the 20/20 Visioning process.  We started with the first listening circle last month with a great turnout.  Fifty people stayed for potluck and then to listen to the Strategic Planning Committee's questions and to have a wonderfully inspiring and upbeat conversation about UUCG.

We are going to have another listening circle on Feb 15 after the Sunday service.  This time the committee will provide the lunch in the sanctuary free to all who stay!   If you didn't have a chance to come last month, please come this time.  If you have thought of more or different comments to make you are welcome to return!  If you can't come, you will miss the conversation, but you needn't miss participating!  Just go to

Yours in faith,

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Cindy Dillard 2013

Thanks to the generosity of UUCG, I have funds to help my professional development.  Recently, I attended an ecumenical two-day workshop that addressed how Religious Educators might promote "lifelong faith formation". There were many ideas about growing our faith communities, but at the forefront was how important it is to focus on building intergenerational experiences.

I have some ideas as to how to do this, but I would like to hear from you.  There will be a survey soon to ask about your interests/needs/hopes/dreams.

In the meantime, here's what's going on for children and youth during the month of February:  (Please note that all of the OWL (Our Whole Lives) sessions are ONLY for children and youth who have pre-registered in advance, thus those classes are "closed".)

February 1: Chalice Club Fellowship ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.  The Searchers RE ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  OWL RE for 3rd - 6th grade meets from 11 a.m. to noon (closed).  OWL RE for 7th - 10th Grade meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (closed).

February 8: Chalice Club Fellowship ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.  The Searchers RE ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  OWL RE for 3rd - 6th grade meets from 11 a.m. to noon (closed).  OWL RE for 7th - 10th Grade meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (closed).

February 15: Chalice Club Fellowship ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. OWL RE for 3rd - 6th grade meets from 11 a.m. to noon (closed).  OWL RE for 7th - 10th Grade meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (closed).  Intergenerational Service: No Searchers.

February 22: Chalice Club Fellowship ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.  The Searchers RE ( Pre-K - 5th Grade) meets from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.  OWL RE for 3rd - 6th grade meets from 11 a.m. to noon (closed).  OWL RE for 7th - 10th Grade meets from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (closed).

The Children Need You!
Please sign up to be a Floater during church service one or two Sundays a year to step into the classroom when a teacher needs to go to the supplies closet or take a child to the restroom.  You may even walk a little one to his or her parent in the sanctuary if he or she wants to.  What a great way to help with no strings attached!  Please email Michelle Puzio at mpooz@bellsouth.net.

From the Congregational Vice-President - Michelle Lee

Michelle Lee 2014

Congregational Committees 101

UUCG creates work groups (teams and committees) to further the mission of UUCG. While the minister oversees UUCG's ministry teams and the board of trustees oversees UUCG's governance committees, the congregation creates congregational committees that are elected by and accountable to the congregation.

UUCG's bylaws define several congregational committees.

The Coordinating Council (CoCo) is responsible for communication, calendaring, and collaboration among all UUCG's teams and committees.  Representatives from every team and committee meet quarterly.  Our minister, Rev Ann Marie Alderman, and vice-president, Michelle Lee, co-chair CoCo meetings.

The Committee on Endowment is responsible for the continued growth and maintenance of UUCG's Endowment Fund.  The three elected members of the committee serve staggered 3-year terms.  They are Ken Williams, Joe Gecinger, and Dennis Hands.

The Committee on Leadership Development is responsible for nominating members for elected positions, recommending congregants for other leadership positions, and for ensuring that leadership development and training are available for potential and existing leaders.  The five elected members serve staggered two-year terms.  They are Benn Kuecker, Donya Lucas, Charlotte Hamlin, Susan Hill, and Wendell Putney.

In addition, the bylaws include a Committee on Search.  When UUCG decides to seek the services of a minister on a permanent basis, to "call a settled minister", UUCG will create a committee to be responsible for that process.  The section of the bylaws that define creation of the Committee on Search is under review by the Bylaws Task Force.  After that review, the board may recommend that the congregation update the process for creating a Committee on Search.  A vote by the congregation to finalize any changes is scheduled for the annual meeting on May 16, 2015.

These congregational committees encourage collaboration, assure our financial future, develop our leaders, and find our ministers.  They are directly accountable to the congregation, working with the minister and board of trustees to further the mission of UUCG.

Please feel free to contact any of these committees directly if you have questions.  Or contact Karen Madrone,  president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like to talk more about accountability to the congregation and furthering the mission of UUCG.

DINNER CIRCLES FOR FEBRUARY THROUGH APRIL

During the past few months, about 30 members of UUCG have enjoyed dining together in each others' homes, sharing the food preparation, the enjoyment of the meal, and much excellent conversation and laughter.  That was round one, and you're invited for a second round to be held from February through April.

This is a great way to get to know your fellow UUCGers better!  The second round will have new groupings and hosts.  Everyone who was signed up for the first round will be included in the second  (unless you let us know by Tuesday Feb 10).  If you missed the first round, and want to join the fun, Welcome!  Let us know by Tuesday February 10 and you'll be included.  Contact: Kay Bishop or Rick Tolley at 336-285-6761 or kbooklover@gmail.com.

IMBOLC Ritual Feb. 5

IMBOLC Ritual - February 5, at 7 p.m., at UUCG

IMBOLC, also known as Candlemass, Imbolg or Imbole, is February 2. IMBOLC is a joyous celebration for Pagans.  This Sabbat is one of the four Celtic Fire Festivals.  IMBOLC commemorates the changing of the Goddess from the Crone to the Maiden.  We delight in celebrating the first signs of Spring, the coldness of Winter is diminishing, and there are signs of new life that stir beneath the Earth.

Hat Day Feb. 15

Hat Day is Feb. 15.  It's our annual day of wearing a hat to church.  The tradition started back at the Unitarian Church on Monterey Drive in the late 1970s or early 1980s.

Our minister, Wyman Rousseau,  had a pulpit exchange one Sunday.  The visiting minister delivered a sermon.  At the conclusion he asked us to surprise Wyman the next Sunday by wearing a hat to church.  Those of us who wore hats that day noticed a lot of energy just by wearing hats.  The tradition continued.

We added a further dimension by asking the congregants to consider creating a hat.  That brought the children and many adults into the hat-wearers group.  One woman created a series of small paper kites for her hat.  One man and his boys created sci-fi helmets out of gallon milk containers.  One woman wore a cellophane flowerpot wrapping.  Folded newspaper hats always showed up.

Let's have some fun and show up on Hat Day with your hat.

Carnival Cabaret is Coming!

UUCG's Carnival Cabaret is Feb. 21.  And Donation Deadline Day is Feb. 8.

Some ideas for donations are: hosting an event in your home or an outing at a museum, vineyard or area attraction, or plan a games night.

Other possibilities: new or very gently used items of good quality and good value - jewelry, electronics, decorative items.

Handmade items also are a top seller: paintings, woodwork, jewelry, knitted clothing or baked goods.

Or think about services you could provide such as lawn care, babysitting, dog-walking, car-washing or tutoring.

And don't forget those high-profile large items such as furniture or sports equipment.

Getaways also are great -- donate time at your cabin, condo or timeshare in the mountains or on the coast.

To donate, fill out a donation form in the church lobby and leave it in the box.

We'll also need assistance with food, entertainment, set-up and clean up and much more.  Contact Lauren Houck, Rissa Tuttle or Robin Lewis to be part of this fun auction fundraiser.

New Members

Diversity

One of the things I love about this congregation is how physical it is.  I know that when I come to church I will receive lots of hugs and a few kisses, that if I need a literal shoulder to lean on it will be there and that I can count on someone holding my hand at the end of every Sunday morning worship service.  These things make me happy.  I have always been a person whose skin craves contact with other people (although a warm kitty will do).

However, I am increasingly aware that there are people in the congregation who do not enjoy physical contact.  They may have a medical condition that makes some or all contact painful; they may be dealing with a compromised immune system; they may fear that they are possibly contagious and not want to risk sharing an illness; or they may just not like to be touched!  The reason doesn't matter.  What matters is making certain that those people are as comfortable with the level of physical contact they get at church as those of us who love physical contact.

This is both about welcoming diversity and about the inherent worth and dignity of all people.  The question is what, if any, cultural changes do we need to make to ensure the comfort of those who do not welcome touch, without making people like myself give it up?

When my kids were teenagers, they were very involved in YRUU (Young Religious Unitarian Universalists), and I had the privilege of attending worship created and led by teens.  Often, these worship services included a certain amount of touch.  Their custom was that if anyone did not want physical contact, they would cross their arms over their chest, hands on shoulders.  There was no stigma attached to this, and everyone respected that choice without comment or question.  That may be one approach, and there may well be others.  At a minimum, we can each do our best to make certain the people we are about to hug welcome that contact, and we can be certain that we don't stigmatize those who do not welcome contact.

Yours for a comfortable environment for all,

Marie Houck, Chair, Healthy Congregation Committee

Justice Action Team Update

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS (TTS)
Thank you to the many folks who have donated funds, dropped off non-perishable food and hygiene items into the lobby basket, and distributed those care bags out in the community.  Please remember that the need is ongoing.  If you shop at Costco or Sam's Club, please consider purchasing an extra box of individual peanut butters, applesauce, juice boxes, etc.  Or even if you don't belong to a buying club--if you see a great deal for a non-perishable food product or an individual hygiene item, please consider buying it for our Justice Action project.  For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard, Youth DRE (uucgre@att.net).  Our children will next assemble carebags on Sunday, February 8.

Food Drive a Possibility

Cross your fingers!  There may be an opportunity to help Greensboro Urban Ministry to feed the hungry on Saturday, April 11,  at the Food Lion store at  4653 West Market Street.  Food Lion is once again allowing us to make an application at that date.  The confirmation has not been received yet, but I'll let you know either way.

If allowed, the food drive will need eight volunteers, two volunteers to work each two-hour shift, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect nonperishable goods from the patrons of the store.  Please contact Becky Floyd at 336-852-3592 or rfloyd2@triad.rr.com to volunteer.  Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

On the first Monday of each month, a group of volunteers from our church prepares and serves supper to the residents of the Urban Ministry shelter.

For the past couple of months, we have had a small number of volunteers show up.   We need some new workers, especially younger ones to be part of this important contribution to the welfare of some or our most vulnerable brothers and sisters.

Please contact Ken Knight if you have questions.  He can be reached at oldpeacenik@gmail.com or at 336/327-7214.

Board of Trustees

Highlights of the January 15, 2015 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting

  • Rev. Ann Marie Alderman reported on efforts to recruit volunteers and hire a pianist while our music director, Mark Freundt, recuperates from surgery for his fractured collarbone.  She noted that volunteers will be needed on April 17 and 18 when UUCG hosts the 2015 Southeast District Annual Assembly.  More information will be forthcoming closer to that time.
  • Karen Madrone, President, confirmed February 28 as the date for a half-day Board retreat to have generative conversation about goals.
  • Karen Madrone and Rev. Ann Marie encouraged people to join them on February 14 at the Mass Moral March on Raleigh and HKonJ (Historic Thousands on Jones Street) People's Assembly.
  • The Board approved the purchase of a "Madonna" style microphone to improve the amplification of the Sunday speaker's voice.  The $350 cost will be posted to the Memorial Fund from monies given in memory of Chris Voorhees, who lived with hearing challenges.
  • Lonnie Houck, Treasurer, reported that our end of the month number was again positive by about $2,500.  Pledges for December were up by about $6,000 compared to November.  Overall, pledges are in line with the YTD budget.  December expenses were about $2,300 less than November.
  • As chair of the Bylaws Taskforce, Lonnie Houck distributed for consideration a list of possible changes to UUCG's bylaws.  These include a phased reduction in size of the Board and increased requirements for a quorum and participation when calling a settled minister.
  • Marie Houck, Chair of Healthy Congregations Committee, reported on the committee's ongoing efforts: Compassionate Communication classes the first Sunday of each month and continued work on a policy and procedure for responding to individual complaints.  Additionally, the committee plans to develop a questionnaire for assessing congregational health in the spring.
  • Shawn Gagne led the third of three 10-minute Board discussions of Not Your Parents' Offering Plate by J. Clif Christopher.
    • The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. and is open to all.

Moral March

Dear Friends,

It was just over a year ago that approximately 1500 UUs from around the country gathered in Raleigh for the massive Moral March organized by the NAACP.  Those who attended remember the massive outpouring of love, support, and demands for justice that took place that weekend.

In that spirit, we are inviting UUs from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia to join us for the 2015 Moral March, which will take place on Feb. 14.  It's Valentines Day so bring a sweetie and share the Love!  Our plans are not as ambitious this time (for one thing, there is no nationwide call from the UUA), but the need for economic, gender, and racial justice is no less than it was a year ago.

Please note that we will not be offering Friday evening programming this year, and home hospitality for Friday evening is much more limited.  Still, we are expecting a good turnout from area UUs and are partnering with the folks from DemocracyNC to create a dynamic program for engaging with the North Carolina  General Assembly and local elected officials.  Lunch will be provided for a nominal charge and we expect to end around 4 p.m.

If you are planning to come (or would like to receive future updates) please register at Moral March .
