The Hands of Time

Face it, pretty much all of us look, if not worse for wear, at least changed by the elements that have touched us over the years. Those changes can be marks of distinction rather than losses of beauty, but they come to us all -- even those of us carved in stone.

What about your appearance surprises you as you've aged?

Wednesday Potluck

We share a potluck supper at 6 p.m. each Wednesday.

  Please bring your own table service.

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

When I was in my twenties, there was an artist rendering of an aged woman that hung in the house I shared with other graduate students.  Her face looked like a road map.  I thought that rendering was beautiful.

 But as I enter my own "maturity", I have mixed feelings about finding my own aging face (and body) beautiful!  Yet, I am inspired by folks  who embrace their wrinkles as indications of their living long.

Congregations, too, age and with aging can come maturity or a sense of wisdom that is grounded by experience.   One can be youthful and wise at the same time.  One can be any age and spiritually "mature" at the same time.  Where do you recognize maturity in yourself?   In what ways are you wrinkled with wisdom?

Yours in faith,

Rev. Ann Marie

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Cindy Dillard 2013

Some folks approach the new year as a time to start over, begin anew...but I've always felt that it was more of an opportunity to evaluate what's been working and what hasn't, and then continue with modifications.  The holidays were great, and we took a break from what we usually do to celebrate friendship and family and love (and food).

But now that it is January, we will continue to pursue our passions and engage in community.  In that spirit of continuing what is working, here is what will be happening at UUCG for our children and youth during the month of January:

Sunday, Jan. 11

9:30 - 10:30 a.m. -- Chalice Club, our fellowship group for preschool through 5th grade children will be discussing Chinese New Year.

11 a.m. until noon: The Searchers, RE multi-age class preschool through 5th grade, will be discussing homelessness and assembling care bags for the needy.

11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. 7th - 10th grade OWL (closed)

12:15 until 1:30 p.m. 3rd to 6th grade OWL Parent Meeting***

Sunday Jan. 18

9:30 - 10:30 a.m  Chalice Club discusses Martin Luther King Day

11 a.m. until noon The Searchers discuss UU's First Principle, the inherent dignity and worth of all beings (through cooperative games)

11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. 7th - 10th grade OWL (closed)

Sunday Jan. 25

9:30 -10:30 a.m. Chalice Club discusses What Holiday Would You Make?

11 a.m. until noon The Searchers (RE Preschool through 2nd grade) discuss UU's First Principle (from "This We Believe")

11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. 7th - 10th grade OWL (closed)

11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. 3rd - 6th grade OWL Parent/Child Orientation***

Congratulations to our K-2 OWL (Our Whole Lives) Graduates: Amos Long, Annabeth Rushforth, Jayna Lewis, Kai Namaste, Laura Yokely, Lucas Hultgren, Malichi Boren, Noah Gagne, Samira Namaste, and Theresa Yokely.  Join us in celebrating how they learned:

accurate information about our wonderful bodies, including correct words;

respectful and safe behaviors for themselves and others;

the value of asking questions that might not feel easy;

the many ways that families look and are;

and the amazing facts about how human beings come into this world

FLOATERS STILL NEEDED!!!  Have you wanted to support YRE, but aren't ready to commit to teaching?  Become a floater once a month, and help support our teachers and our families.  For more information, contact Michelle Puzio (mpooz@bellsouth.net)

From the Congregational President - Karen Madrone

Karen Madrone

Hello friends,

2015 is already shaping up to be an interesting year!  As you can see from the board meeting highlights, the board's work towards focusing on governance has meant we have more time to discuss and think about what is important for our work both in the present and in the future.  Our board meetings are filled with thoughtful discussion and even laughter.  We are a board who really enjoys our time together and it shows.  It is truly a blessing to be part of this amazing group of leaders who are willing to challenge themselves, learn and grow.

At this month's board meeting we heard from the Leadership Development Committee about their plans to do a leadership training in March and their desire to send two people to a regional leadership development training next summer.  If you have ever had an interest in serving in a leadership position, whether that's in Religious Education (Child or Adult), as a Team Lead, Committee Chair, or Board member, I encourage you to consider attending the training in March.  Contact Benn Keucker, Committee Chair, for more info.

Please mark your calendars- and plan to attend - the Visioning Listening Circle which will take place Sunday, January 18 after the service.  This is the beginning process of a series of conversations about our church's vision and mission.  We need as many people as possible to attend so we can hear from a wide a variety of voices in our community.  There will be additional opportunities for further discussion throughout 2015.

Please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like to discuss UUCG's evolving church governance and how it relates to Unitarian Universalism's foundational values.

Team and Committee Meetings and ways to help out
Membership in our movement entails the investment of both our time and talents to further our shared mission.  Please find ways to connect your personal contributions with those of others within our Spiritual Community to make our Church, Community and Culture the best it can be.

Some of our Teams and Committees have regular meetings.  Others meet irregularly or virtually and accomplish their missions without regular meetings.  The list below contains the meeting time and location of those teams and committees that meet regularly.   Feel free to attend any of these meetings as they are all open.  We invite your participation in our church's governance and mission.

Ministry Team Meetings
All Ministry Team Leads meet with the Minister on the 2nd Tuesday of the month at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary to plan together for all church programming.  This is an open meeting.

Carnival Cabaret is Coming!

UUCG's Carnival Cabaret is just six weeks away!  Mark your calendar for Feb. 21, and  gather your donations.

Some ideas for donations are: hosting an event in your home or an outing at a museum, vineyard or area attraction, or plan a games night.

Other possibilities: new or very gently used items of good quality and good value - jewelry, electronics, decorative items.

Handmade items also are a top seller: paintings, woodwork, jewelry, knitted clothing or baked goods.

 Or think about services you could provide such as lawn care, babysitting, dog-walking, car-washing or tutoring.

And don't forget those high-profile large items such as furniture or sports equipment.

Getaways also are great -- donate time at your cabin, condo or timeshare in the mountains or on the coast.

To donate, fill out a donation form in the church lobby and leave it in the box.

Donations are due by Feb. 8.

 We'll also need assistance with food, entertainment, set-up and clean up and much more.  Contact Lauren Houck, Rissa Tuttle or Robin Lewis to be part of this fun auction fundraiser.

Hymnal Donation

The Music Team will be offering you the opportunity to add to our limited collection of teal hymnals ("Singing the Journey ") during the month of January.  For a donation of $18, you can replenish our supply while also having a bookplate inside the hymnal to acknowledge your gift and dedication of your choice.  Look for us in January and make a difference!

Ladies' and Men's Night Out

Ladies' Night Out

Ladies are invited to our monthly Vietnamese dinner at the Saigon Restaurant the last Monday of the month, January 26.  We meet at 6:30 p.m.  If we have ten or more, we have the option of having the chef prepare a communal meal for us.  It's usually a soup, two kinds of egg rolls and one or two entrees, costing a little over $10.00.  We also have the option of selecting from the menu.  It's a lively evening of table discussion, laughter and getting to know more about each other.  Newcomers are always welcome.  If you plan to attend please contact Mary Davis (212-0819) or Janet Plummer (294-6364) before 5 pm January 26.  Thanks!

Men's Night Out

Join us the 2nd Monday of the month at 6 p.m. at Villarosa,  6010 Landmark Center Blvd,

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

On the first Monday of each month, a group of volunteers from our church prepares and serves supper to the residents of the Urban Ministry shelter.

For the past couple of months, we have had a small number of volunteers show up.   We would love to have some new hands.
Please contact Ken Knight if you have questions.  He can be reached at oldpeacenik@gmail.com or at 336/327-7214.
This is a tradition for us to serve these residents on the first Monday of each month.  It costs around $100 each month which is covered by donations from our members.

Highlights of the Dec. 16 Board of Trustees Meeting

Ann Marie Alderman reported that she is working on the next biannual staff reviews.  Four new members joined at the recent UU Orientation, while one existing member has moved out of the area. Ann Marie participated in the Faith Leaders Council Prayer Service at First Baptist related to racial injustice, and along with other area ministers signed their public letter.  UUCG Board members have been invited to participate in a teleconference "chat", facilitated by Peter Kandis, Vice President of the Southeast District Board of Directors.
  • Karen Madrone, President, would like to have a half-day Board retreat to have generative conversation about goals.  Karen, Ann Marie and Michelle Lee will meet with the president, vice president and minister of the Winston Salem fellowship on December 18 to discuss ideas about opportunities for shared efforts.  Among the topics to be explored is the possible exchange of financial best practices reviews.
  • Lonnie Houck, Treasurer, reported that our Delta number was negative for the first time this year by more than $3,000.  A pledge statement will go out mid- to late-January.  By the end of December, our account will be completely changed over to SunTrust.
