Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

This is traditionally the month to express thanks, so here goes: I am so grateful for all the efforts that so many UU's (as well as many others) made so that Marriage Equality is a reality in our state.  I am deeply appreciate for every single thing we do to make this world more of an equitable and hospitable place for all people.

I am grateful for how Sunday after Sunday the UUCG sanctuary fills up with enthusiastic, reflective and appreciate people.  It has been so heartwarming to witness the growing numbers of young people, both children, youth and young adults throughout the building on Sundays and on Wednesday nights.

I have loved the occasions when I have made the suggestion that if folks have the time, they might want to drop by UUCG to help with celebrating, selling, cleaning up, etc. etc.. and people do time and time again!  My being asked to sing along with our fabulous choir at the recent Greensboro Crop Walk when they made everyone there feel patriotic with their magnificent version of The Star Spangled Banner was a highlight moment for me.

Day after day I am so appreciative of the dedicated and energetic ministry offered by all the Team Leads and all those volunteers who people the teams.  Again and again the Board and their Committees impress me with their thoughtfulness and eagerness to make UUCG the very best it can be.  Loving this work!

Yours in faith,

Rev. Ann Marie

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Cindy Dillard 2013

 Children, Children Everywhere...

UUCG has been fortunate to see growth in our YRE (Youth Religious Education) program in recent years -- both in terms of children participating, and also in terms of adult volunteers.  But over the past few weeks, at the beginning of the service when children usually come forward for the story, there have been fewer children.  And you might be wondering "what's up with that?"

It's actually a wonderful sign of growth.  UUCG is in the middle of providing K-2 OWL (Our Whole Lives) education, which 10 families (and 12 children) have chosen to participate in as their YRE option.  Because the OWL curriculum is so rigorous, children go directly to the classroom for an hour of exploration and guidance.

Children ages 3rd-6th grade (whose families choose OWL education for them) will begin their journey in late January (families will receive a direct mailing).  For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard, Director YRE (uucgre@att.net; 614-975-0126)

Nursery Notes

Speaking of Children, Children Everywhere, we have had an influx of infants and toddlers in the nursery recently.  At our last meeting of the YRE Team, it was mentioned that the following supplies to make the nursery more infant/toddler-friendly would be most welcome:

  • a swing/bouncer

  • board books

  • floor blanket

If you have items to be donated to the nursery, please contact Cindy Dillard, Director YRE (uucgre@att.net/ 614-975-0126)

From the Congregational President - Karen Madrone

This month's board meeting had several items that carried over from September. The board has a practice of introducing an item at one meeting and then voting on it at the next meeting.  This helps keep the board from making decisions too quickly.  It also keeps us grounded in making decisions that truly reflect our proper responsibilities and role.

Following up on Michelle Lee's recent columns, the board strives to stick to its role in governance and to support ministry - and not be in the way.  Using a policy governance model requires a constant balancing act and awareness of "who's in charge of what".  It also means that we apologize and forgive as we continue to learn our way.  We are all learning and growing together and allowing for grace and love when there are misunderstandings.  To quote from our new covenant, we "assume best intentions" which makes a tremendous difference in how we function.  The best part of policy governance is that it greatly reduces the "detail" work that the board used to focus on and lets us think about what we are actually called to do: discerning and articulating the church's mission, vision, core values, and philosophy of governance; strategic planning and oversight, and fiduciary stewardship.

Towardthat end, I'm glad to report that the refinance of the church building is finally complete!  All the documents have been signed and thanks to Lonnie Houck and Joe Gecinger the church will be saving a lot of money and enable us to pay off the mortgage sooner.

Katja Brown, Rev. Ann Marie, and I have been meeting and discussing a long term plan toward creating our mission statement.  We also now have a two-year schedule for hearing from the committees that report to the board, the Developmental Ministry Team, and the committees that report to the congregation.  We are working together to make sure we are not forgetting important governance work and supporting each other with humor, flexibility, and respect.

This month we also took some time to watch a video about being a self-differentiated leader.  You can find the link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgdcljNV-Ew.   I highly recommend watching it.  I'm grateful to the board for being willing to take risks and do new, unexpected things.  And I'm grateful to each of you for your support.  Feel free to talk to any of us with any questions you might have.

In Covenant,

Karen Madrone

Please feel free to contact Karen Madrone president, or  Michelle Lee, vice-president,  if you would like to talk more about effective church governance or the many lives UUCG transforms.

The ladies of UUCG are invited to dine at the Saigon Restaurant the last Monday of the month at 6:30 p.m. The restaurant is located at the southwest corner of Merritt Drive and High Point Road.  If we have ten or more UUs, the chef offers a special meal that he prepares, but he always has our approval of what he intends to prepare.  Diners have the option of ordering from the menu.  Newcomers are always welcome.  If you plan to attend this entertaining evening, please contact the coordinators, Mary Davis (212-0819) or Janet Plummer (294-6364) Note: No meeting in December.

Men's Night Out 2, Last Monday each month
A second Men's Night Out is held the last Monday of each month.  We will meet at 6 p.m. at Applebee's on Battleground Ave.

Benefit Concert at UUCG

Keyboardist-composer Dave Fox will perform a benefit concert at 7 p.m. on Nov. 8.

Fox, the pianist at this year's Missa Gaia, is a music professor at Greensboro College and one of the organizers of the recent "Healing Blues" concert in Greensboro, which produced a CD and concert series to raise funds for the city's homeless.

His musical offerings range from original classical works, blues and jazz to rock and Avant-garde explorations.

Fox's CDs include "If These Songs Could Talk," "Home Again," and 2012's "Farewell to Arigemon," a rock album produced with the Meldavians.

Admission to the concert is free, but an offering will be collected to benefit the church.

Faith Formation

Adult Faith Formation is held the second and fourth Sundays of the month from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m.  We will explore "The Big Questions" and are using the same themes as the Chalice Circles are to focus our discussions.  Rev. Ann Marie introduces the themes for the month following in her sermon each 2nd Sunday.  For more information, contact Steve Pearsall.

Join us at 9:30 a.m. on Nov. 2 for "Politics And Compassionate Communication".  The month of November tends to be a season of political discourse, some of it quite uncomfortable.  It could be the neighbor who is supporting a candidate you find unacceptable, or the work colleague who is celebrating election results that have left you deeply disappointed, or the uncle who sits down next to you at Thanksgiving and proceeds to wax eloquently supporting political causes that you oppose.  The Healthy Congregation Committee will lead the Adult Faith Formation class at 9:30, and explore how the use of Compassionate Communication can help us engage in these conversations in a way that maintains our relationships and our sanity.

Justice Action Team Update

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

Please Join us on the first Monday of each month when the Justice Action Team organizes and serves a meal to the 100 residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry's night shelter.  We usually have 10 to 12 volunteers from our church who buy, cook and serve the meal each month.  We prepare on site the same meal each month, consisting of turkey chili, buttered bread, fruit salad, corn and bean salad and homemade cookies.  Several of our members make cookies, and the residents love the chance to eat such delicacies.

On Oct. 6, volunteers from our church and four from Hinshaw United Methodist Church served supper to 90 residents.  It costs around $100 each month to prepare the meal; the cost is covered by donations from our members.

Greensboro Housing Solutions

Sign Up Now for Work Day with Community Housing Solutions on November 8

You can't miss the banner at our church entrance - sign up under the banner to work with Community Housing Solutions to repair and improve a home for a family needing help to stay in their home.  Don't worry about your abilities to work with a hammer or a paint brush or a rake and shovel.  CHS will have at least one professional builder on site to direct us.  And several of our members were very able to pitch in and demonstrate as well as use the old elbow grease. Hearty sandwiches from a good deli will be provided along with chips and cookies.  If you want to provide some of these extras, you can volunteer to do that at the JAT table.  About 20 people worked on a home in June and seemed to love doing it.  And we will have more comfortable working conditions in November!  Get more information about CHS and our efforts with them at the JAT table. or contact Sara Bourquin at 632-1616 or sbourquin@triad.rr.com.

Nov. 10 Blood Drive

Twice a year, our church holds a Blood Drive to replenish Red Cross supplies. This fall's Drive will take place in the sanctuary on Nov. 10th from 2:00-6:30 pm.  All blood types are needed.  Average time, start to finish, is about one hour.  Won't you be among the honored minority to donate a pint?  For priority attention, please make an appointment at our Justice Action table on Sunday mornings, or online at

www.redcrossblood.org, keyword: UUCG.  You may also call the church office to sign up.  Remember to bring a photo ID or your Red Cross donor card the day of the drive.

Another donation is also needed for this event: snacks and juices for the canteen. These may be brought to church Nov. 9 or before the Drive on the 10th.  There is a sign-up sheet for this as well.

P.S. Don't forget to eat your spinach and other iron-rich foods to build up your blood's iron levels.

Suggestions Sought for Share the Plate 2015

For several years it has been a UUCG practice to donate half the cash or undesignated money in the collection plate to local non-profit organizations working for the good of the citizens of Guilford County. Again this year we solicit your suggestions, asking that you submit the name and a brief description of the mission or work of the organization.  Please be certain that this group is designated as 501c3 and can accept our donations.  For example, the school system cannot accept donations.  However, various groups work with the system in aiding students in need.  Also be assured that Urban Ministry is always included so you don't need to mention that.  Selections will be made and announced in January.  Please submit your nomination to the Justice Action Team by the end of November.  Leave your written suggestion at the JAT table at the entrance or in their mailbox in the hall.  You can also give to any JAT member that you know.  Members usually present at church are Ken Knight, Becky Floyd, Nancy Powersmith, Sue Cole and Sara Bourquin.

Fellowship Opportunities

Volunteers Needed for Thanksgiving Dinner

Want to celebrate and give thanks with your church family?  We'd love to have you but just like at home, the feast is a cooperative effort.

We need eight volunteers to commit to help with cleanup before we begin planning the event.  If we round up a crew by Nov. 17, Thanksgiving Dinner at UUCG will be on.  If not, we'll have to cancel the event.

Cindy Williams has graciously agreed to organize this popular opportunity for fellowship, be she can't do it alone.  Send an email to  KBooklover@gmail.com or call 336-285-6761 to be part of the fun and satisfaction of working together on this special holiday.

Knitting Circle

The Knitting Circle has been meeting on Tuesdays from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. in the RE Wing, enjoying Girl Scout cookies and other treats, as well as each other's company.  The circle is for anyone interested in knitting:  beginners, novices, intermediate and expert knitters are all welcome.  UUCG has several expert knitters; at least one of them will be there to teach, advise, or help you untangle if you get all knotted up!  Come and try it, come and ask questions, come and teach -- you're sure to have a good time.  For more information, contact Robin Lewis at 518-894-4253.

Dinner Groups

Twenty-nine members have signed up for Dinner Circles.  If you are one of them and have not received an email or phone call from us identifying your group, please contact Kay Bishop and/or Rick Tolley at KBooklover@gmail.com, or 336-285-6761.

Healthy Congregation Committee

As I read books on leadership, ministry, compassionate communications and a surprising number of other topics, again and again I encounter the admonishment to slow down.

Don't send the e-mail you composed when you were angry.  Don't respond to anger with defensiveness or more anger.  Think before you speak - and think carefully.  This has never been one of my best strengths!  I grew up in a household that operated at high volume and speed, and making myself slow down is always a challenge, though I'm getting better at it.

Harder than just slowing down, though, is knowing WHEN to slow down.  Sometimes being engaged in a fast conversation is not a problem, other times it is.  How can I tell when I'm about to say something I wish I had not said?  The best advice I've gotten is to pay attention to my body.  What are the physical sensations I get just before I do something I later regret?

The first step is to be aware of your own physical responses.  They are different for different people:  some will feel tension in their neck, others a tightness in the stomach, some may find themselves clenching their teeth or fists.  If you think about a time when someone did or said something that upset you, pay attention to your body's response to that remembering.  These will be your cues.  Once you become familiar with your own physical response, you can teach yourself to be aware of those cues when they occur in real time.

When you sense those cues, it is time to stop:  slow down, perhaps remove yourself from the situation temporarily, think carefully about what you are about to do or say.  It will, I am told, take a long time to develop any facility with this at all, but as always our goal is not perfection but progress.

Yours for a healthy slowness,

Marie Houck

A Yard Sale Thanks
This is a HUGE Thank You to all the wonderful people who donated items and helped put together our third annual yard sale on Saturday, Oct. 25.

With all the help we had, no one had to "do it all" and everything ran smoothly.  And again the One Hour Trailer Trash Crew moved the leftovers out to the truck as the rest of us packed it up, took down the tables, vacuumed and set up the sanctuary for Sunday service.

The sale brought in about $600, which was mostly from non-UUs.foreign language thanks
Thank You,
Suzanne Deering

Memorial Fund Update

In early September, a longtime member of UUCG, Chris Voorhees, passed on.  She was a huge supporter of the choir.  She was also hard of hearing.  When I met Chris many years ago, I was really surprised that someone who was hard of hearing was so passionate about music, but I learned that not being able to hear every word or note did not stop Chris from being an active part of the music program at UUCG.  She participated in the "MUUsic on the Road" trips and was a regular with the Jazz Nativity collaboration with the United Methodist Church on Market Street.

Due to her lack of hearing ability, she was given a special seat in the front row so she could better hear people coming up to share their Joys and Concerns.  She could have just as easily chosen not to bother with hearing Joys and Concerns, but being connected to the community was very important to her, and her hearing issues were not going to keep her from being an active, integral member of UUCG.  Because she wanted to be aware of the sermons being given by the Minister or Speaker, she asked for a printed copy of the sermons on Sunday morning.  She did not want to be left out in any way.

Several UUCG members gave to the church's Memorial Fund in Chris' honor after she passed.  These memorials will be used to begin work on the audio and video equipment at UUCG.  That work includes mounting  the projector in a platform that hangs from the ceiling.  Imagine not having to set up the projector each time we need it and not have it taking up needed floor space.  Having the projector on a stand in the middle of the floor in front of the dias means that the Service Leader, Minister or Speaker, the Music Director, and the Director of Religious Education have to constantly be aware of where they are walking and make sure they are not tripping over the stand.  In addition, when the children come to the front for story time, the projector stand can be in their way.

In addition, other dreams we have to improve the audio video experience at UUCG include installing an inductive loop system that will greatly improve the audio experience for people who use hearing aids; adding the ability to podcast or display video clips of sermons or musical presentations, like Missa Gaia.

With funds from Chris' memorials, we can start work on these projects, but we need additional funds to move forward.  Please consider a donation to help improve the audio-video experience for our worship services, increase efficiencies, and most importantly make everyone feel included.

In Covenant,

Karen Madrone
