Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

New beginnings! That is what the month of September usually means for students and teachers. It means that, too, for congregational life. Even though new board members and new leaders of committees and teams officially begin when the church fiscal year begins on July 1, everything really gets going in September!

Here's some of the news: Tune in on September 5th to radio station WFDD 88.5 to hear 5 Day Sponsorship spots featuring UUCG! Plan to attend Adult Faith Formation on Sundays at 9:30 am, starting on September 14, for The BIG Questions! I will lead the first one, then Nina Namaste and Steve Pearsall and others will. There are Chalice Circles to sign up for, which will be offered at various times. Use this link, http://tinyurl.com/puyh6pa  or sign up in the foyer after church. The Wednesday evening Expressions Services begin again. Lots of new things are happening for children and youth, too!

Bring in the new this Sunday, September 7th with our Annual Ingathering/Worship for all Ages Service. Don't forget to bring the water you collected from wherever you may have traveled this summer. Remember the water you bring can be real or "symbolic". You can always use our social media to virtually connect with UUCG, but we sure would like to really see you!

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Cindy Dillard 2013

Have you ever seen adults whose nametags are adorned with multi-colored beads and marker-drawn images?  Have you wondered about the children who sport similarly decked-out nametags?  These are the hallmark of Chalice Club, our Fellowship Group for children aged preschool through 5th grade.

Each Sunday, while adults are attending Faith Formation classes, children are building community, learning our principles and figuring out how they live our principles in their everyday lives.  This year's Chalice Club will begin Sunday, Sept. 14, 9:30-10:30 a.m. in room 4/5.  Sunday School classes also begin that day, starting in the Worship Center at 10:55 a.m.  For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard, Director YRE(uucgre@att.net).

SAVE THE DATE FOR ALL-CHURCH POTLUCKS following Sunday services on Oct. 5, Jan. 4 and April 5.

From the Congregational President - Karen Madrone
Karen Madrone
Dear Friends,
As you can see from the board highlights in this newsletter, in August the board had probably the shortest meeting in recorded memory! However, we had our fall retreat this past weekend, where we worked on building connections with each other, discussing our governance structure (getting clear about who's responsible for what) and visioning and planning for the next 1-2 years. We had big-picture conversations about making sure we are working together well as a team. Our work at the retreat planted the seeds for future growth and understanding how we live our principles and values in the greater Greensboro area. We enjoyed this opportunity to grow and learn together.

Please contact Karen Madrone, president, or Michelle Lee, vice-president, if you would like to discuss the work or your place in our governance committees.

Faith Formation

Spirituality: How Do I Get It? UUCG Chalice

In a recently conducted survey folks were asked to name some of life's big questions. The Adult Faith Formation team is preparing for time on Sunday mornings to explore these "big" questions. Expected and received responses were: Why are we here? How do we deal with anger and disappointment? What is the point of it all? One of the unexpected posted responses made me smile.

"What is Spiritual, and how do I get it?" I smiled, because I have asked that same question, long ago, before I began to realize that we are all possessive of a spiritual dimension! We are hoping to create a space to share our spiritual dimensions on Sundays from 9:30 - 10:30. You are invited, starting on Sunday, September 14, to explore with others the questions that give meaning and purpose to our lives. Hoping that this time will be not so much for debating answers, particularly those that might arise from philosophical positioning, but rather for engaged sharing of those times when your life was altered, changed, even perhaps transformed when the "right" question was asked.

Questions such as; Does my life have meaning? Am I following my true purpose? Am I loved by/cared for by a force beyond my immediate family and set of friends? Will my time on earth be worthwhile? We will share how the question asked in the middle of the night, in a classroom, by life itself, may have led you down a pathway or onto a journey you may not have anticipated beforehand. In my way of thinking, just pondering these sorts of questions, we enter a "spiritual" dimension. Our answers change. Other people's answers may or may not become ours. Spirituality and the Big Questions. Come and get some!

Justice Action Team Update

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry

Please Join us on the first Monday of each month when the Justice Action Team organizes and serves a meal to the 100 residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry's night shelter.  We usually have 10 to 12 volunteers from our church who buy, cook and serve the meal each month.  We prepare on site the same meal each month, consisting of turkey chili, buttered bread, fruit salad, corn and bean salad and homemade cookies.  Several of our members make cookies, and the residents love the chance to eat such delicacies.  The ingredients for the meal cost a little over $90 each month, paid for by UUCG.

On Monday, Sept. 1, eight volunteers from our church and four from Hinshaw United Methodist Church served a meal of chili, fruit salad and homemade cookies to an appreciative group of 90. Thanks for your financial support and labor.   If you would like to be part of this rewarding work, contact Ken Knight.

Greensboro Pride
UUCG will be participating in Greensboro Pride on Saturday, Sept. 13 at Festival Park downtown from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.  Please come support us as we take part in this wonderful celebration. If you would like to volunteer at our booth, contact Karen Madrone. For more information about Greensboro Pride, go the http://greensboropride.org/.

Possible date for next CHS Workday Greensboro Housing Solutions
We are looking at a tentative date of Nov. 8 for our next workday with Community Housing Solutions. This looks like a good date, pending approval from the CHS volunteer crew coordinator. So save that date and watch for an annoucement in the Tuesday e-announcements or Sunday Order of Service. CHS reported that they purchased power tools with eht $500-plus contributed to Share the Plate in June. JAT will be forming our work crew in the next few weeks. You can sign up to be part of that crew in September at the JAT table after services.

Taking it T-UU The Streets (TTS)

The driving routes that I regularly take around Greensboro include several corners that frequently have people --mostly men--asking for money.  They have cardboard signs that say "Homeless - please help". The wording varies, but the message is the same. In the past, seeing these men embarrassed me; I didn't feel comfortable giving them money, so I averted my eyes and pretended they didn't exist.

But then I discovered the care bags that had been assembled by the youth. I took some and started passing them out. People were happy to receive them; they said "Thank you," and "God bless" and I felt good about doing something.

Now, even when I don't have bags in my car to give out, I smile and wave at the men on the corners. I recognize the regulars and I think a couple of them recognize me.  We have made a connection.

So, thank you to the people who donate things and give money to purchase the items that go into the bags. And thank you to the youth who assemble them.  They have changed the way I look at the men who stand on corners, and that is a very good thing indeed.

Susan Hill, UUCG member

Taking It T-UU The Streets care bags were assembled last on Sunday, August 31, during Sunday School by The Nurturers. Thank you to our "angels" who contributed $80 towards the purchase of itmes last month as well as to the families who give their children money for the classroom offertory.

Also thanks for this month's donations of granola bars, peanut butters, juice boxes, and individual hygiene products --especially oral hygiene items-- dropped off in the lobby basket.  With your support, we were able to supply and assemble 40 care bags for the needy which included: a beverage, granola bar, breakfast bar, peanut butter crackers, peanut butters, fruit snacks, vitamin C drops, band-aids, soap, hygiene items, washcloths and messages of kindness.  For more information about this project, please contact Cindy Dillard, Youth DRE (uucgre@att.net).

Peanut Butter Alert PeanutButter

Thanks to everyone at the Unitarian Universalist Church who contributed to
the 88 pounds of peanut butter and nonperishable food collected last month for the Greensboro Food Bank.

"Share Half" Recipients for September

Donations during the first two Sundays in September will benefit homeless children in Guilford County Schools.

The second two Sundays' contributions  will go to the Guilford Green Foundation, which seeks to unite community by fostering organizations that advance LGBTQ persons and issues. The foundation raises funds to assist local organizations that might not otherwise receive funding, such as youth groups and health and faith organizations.

Chalice Circles starting in September

Vibrant churches offer great music, thoughtful sermons, reflective and meditative practices, lifespan religious education, time for fun and fellowship, and ways to engage the wider community.  Healthy, active congregations also find ways to create and sustain small groups of people where individuals get to know each other and reflect upon those deeper meanings in ways they may not otherwise have an opportunity to do so.

Sometimes, small group community just happens, when folks form men's groups or book clubs or work together on a particular project.  They may find that they are just naturally sharing the complexities and paradoxes of their life journeys in ways that build relationships full of trust and care.  It is within these sorts of small groups where lifelong friendships begin.  It is within these kinds of small groups where acceptance and hope can most make themselves present in our lives.  The kind of self-discovery and sense of belonging that grows in these settings grow the deepening relationships that are essential for living long and healthy lives.  It is this sort of healthy community that people are seeking when they come to church!

Beginning in mid-September, UUCG is about to be very intentional by offering what we are calling Chalice Circles.  You will have an an opportunity to sign up to be part of a group of eight to ten people, led by a trained facilitator. Each Chalice Circle will meet once a month.  Differing days and times will be available. When you sign up, you will be promising your commitment to be present with your circle for at least the next 10 months.   Our hope is that this opportunity will add even more to the richness of congregational life here at UUCG.

A Word of Thanks from Joyce Allen and David Teague

Beloved Community,

Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for your ongoing care and concern as we rebuild our lives after catastrophic loss. Special thanks are due to those of you who helped with the concert and auction benefit given for us on Saturday, Aug. 23. Thank you to those who planned the event, who donated so many dazzlingly beautiful things to be sold, contributed delicious food and drink and handled the payments. In addition, may we never forget the musicians who sang and played for us all: Steve and Suzanne Andrews, Vance Archer, Phoenix Harmony, Wendell Putney and our beloved Monarch of Pianoland, Mark Freundt. More thanks and credit go to Cindy Williams for the festive decorations and everyone who stayed and reset the room for Sunday morning. When we tell the story of these times in years to come, your generosity will be our inspiration.

Humbly,

Joyce Allen and David Teague

Making an Enduring Gift to UUCG

autumn-path-sm.jpg

Are you looking for a way to make a legacy contribution to UUCG?

The UUCG Endowment Fund was established in 2007 and is a convenient opportunity for friends and members to give an enduring gift that will keep on giving to the mission of this church. The congregation established this permanent, untouchable fund that will grow with enduring gifts and their earnings until a monetary threshold ($100,000) is met. Once that threshold is met, the earnings will be available to support programs, activities and/or facilities, which promote the seven principles of the UU faith.

Since inception our contributions to the fund have totaled $12,500, which is invested in the UUA Common Endowment Fund. Those contributions have grown in value to $13,815.76 as of June 30. There is also $590 invested in a local account. When it reaches $1,000, it will be transferred to the UUA Common Endowment Fund.

If you do not have UUCG Endowment Fund as a beneficiary in your will, please contact a committee member for a codicil, with which you can conveniently amend your will to add or increase your legacy contribution.

If you already have the UUCG Endowment Fund in your will, or are considering modifications to your estate plans, please contact a committee member so that church records can accurately reflect your intentions. Your generosity and support for this church will reach beyond your lifetime.

Lifetime gifts (making monetary contributions during your lifetime) are also welcome. Celebrate a special occasion, or honor a specific person by designating gifts to the UUCG Endowment Fund.

If you have questions, or want to discuss your enduring gift, please contact a member of the Endowment  Fund Committee: Ken Williams, Dennis Hands and Joe Gecinger.

.Dennis Hands, Recording Secretary, Committee on Endowment

Highlights of the August 19 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
  • Karen Madrone, Board President, encourgages board members to stay attuned to the larger UU conversations about our faith movement. She is wiorking with Rev. Ann Marie and Michelle Lee, Vice President, to plan for the board retreat Aug. 29-30.
  • Lonnie Houck, Treasurer, reported that total pledge income through July 31 was about 1 percent over YTD budget. Total income YTD, including bank lease payments distributed evenly over 12 months, was 2 percent over budget. Expenses were 8 percent over total YTD budget, mainly due to the $4,000 payment for the website, a one-time expenditure already in the budget. With receipt of the bank lease payment, our current Delta (Income-Expense) for the year was positive by $7,735.
  • Lonnie reported that the mortgage will be refinanced through Sun Trust because they offered a better interest rate than BB&T. So we will have an adjustable rate of prime plus 0 percent allowing us to pay down the principal much faster with the same budgeted mortgage payment. The Finance Committee will review the interest rates periodically.
  • The board members agreed to change the meeting schedule to alternate between the third Thursday and third Tuesday of each month, beginning with a Thursday meeting in September. The will better accommodate the scheduling needs of all boar members.

Additional details are available elsewhere in this newsletter or in reports posted at

http://uugreensboro.org/for-members/ under Member Documents. The next Board meeting will be Thursday, Sept. 18 at 7 pm and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
