Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

Hopefully, you will see a new UUCG website this month! Thanks to the generosity of all those who pledged for the 2014/15 church year and all who approved a budget that included the funds for this project! We have been hard at work to create a website that better reflects our excitement about being UU's in Greensboro and beyond.
Our website is just one of many doors into Unitarian Universalism. Through the front doors of our building is another way! I hope you will bring a friend to the Wednesday evening potlucks that will continue through the summer, while the Expressions service is on a break. Many Wednesday evenings we will be showing Movies with a Message in the sanctuary. Other evenings there will be board games to play.
Please plan to drive to Gibson Park with your lawn chairs and lunch for our Annual Service in the park on Sunday, June 1. The following Sunday, back at UUCG, will feature the first annual Steven Reinhartsen Memorial Fund speaker during the worship service. Later in the month, on June 28th, many of our members and friends will engage in a new all church justice action project by helping Community Housing Solutions, make needed repairs in family homes who haven't the resources to do so on their own.
There are lots of ways to find a door in, to be in community at UUCG!

YRE-2014 SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL PROGRAM-
"THE NURTURERS"
This year's multi-age Summer Sunday School program will focus on the concept of being nurturing: nurturing one another and visitors through cooperative games; nurturing those who are less-fortunate through our ongoing justice action project for the homeless "Taking It T-UU The Streets"; nurturing our earth by gardening and nurturing our church family by sharing the bounties of our garden. "The Nurturers" is geared towards children entering preschool-5th grade, with complimentary nursery care provided for younger children every Sunday, 10:30a-12:15p. Older children are welcome as helpers with prior arrangement with Cindy Dillard, Director of YRE (uucgre@att.net/614-975-0126.)

From the Congregational Vice President - Karen Madron
|

The board is wrapping up projects and beginning the process of assessing our progress towards our goals. The end of the church year (cycling from July 1-June 30th) is almost complete. The budget was approved at the May 18 Congregational meeting, and new leaders have been elected. The Accountability Committee has asked the board to complete a self assessment that will help us determine how we are meeting our Developmental Ministry goals, how we are working together, and what areas could be improved. Marie Houck will give the board the results of this survey at the June board meeting. Katja gave an update on the Strategic Planning Committee. The board, Rev. Ann Marie, and the Strategic Planning Committee are having discussions about the best way to move forward. The board approved the charter for the Reinhartsen Speaker Fund Policy, and they approved Susan Hill as a delegate to GA and Carol Lehman as an alternate delegate. Ken Williams was approved as the chair of the Restricted Gifts Task Force. Moving forward into the new church year, the new board has begun planning for its retreat which will be on August 29-39 at the St. Francis Springs Center in Stoneville, NC. This represents an opportunity to step out in faith as an overnight retreat hasn't taken place in many years. Finally, I would like to thank and acknowledge Charlotte Hamlin, Myra Anne Dean, and Ken Knight. They have each contributed greatly to the work of the board. Please thank them for their service to UUCG. I am grateful for each of them. Thank you! Karen Madrone, Congregational Vice President |

GET TO KNOW OUR NURSERY STAFF
|

DONYA LUCAS has enjoyed serving in the nursery for five years. She has watched her own sons, Lucas (6) and Jay (4) thrive in the YRE program, which they have attended since they were babies. Donya has helped to build community by welcoming new families and other nursery staff as well as many friends and members of UUCG.
XOEY KELLY has been working in the nursery since 2011. She enjoys spending time with all of UUCG's littlest members, including her own daughters, Eris and Fauna. With a degree in visual art, Xoey uses her skills to help our children learn about coordination and imagination.
DAN KELLY occasionally assists in the nursery. A director of children's theater, he brings a sense of play to the romper room. He is glad to have so many little friends!
GEORGINA MATEU joined our nursery staff this past February. She is originally from Argentina, and is the mother of a precious three-year old boy, Enzo. She is a volunteer in her son's preschool and is glad to be part of the UUCG nursery staff.
JULIA SHEEHAN is the newest addition to our nursery staff. A rising senior at Guilford College (double major in Social Anthropology and Gender Studies), Julia has spent years working with children as a Catholic RE teacher, Basketball and Soccer coach, and camp counselor. She is thoroughly excited to become a part of our community.

Volunteer for our Blood Drive, May 30
|
AN EASY WAY TO LIVE OUR FAITH:
Donate Blood. Volunteer at our Blood Drive May 30.
We UUs pride ourselves on being of service to our fellow humans in need. Most charities ask you to reach into your wallets. The Red Cross asks that you give something even more valuable: the gift of life flowing thru your veins - and makes it even easier by bringing its equipment to our church twice a year.
Make time in your schedule between 2:00 and 6:30 pm on Friday, May 30 to donate at our next blood drive, or help with it - or both. Look for the sign-up table in the foyer throughout the month of May. Can't come the day of? Donate food or make phone calls ahead of the drive at your convenience. Volunteers for short-term tasks are invited to call coordinator Phoenix Harmony at 336-855-8018.

An Evening of Justice Discussion and Planning June 19
|

Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of North Carolina
Greetings To Our Ministers And Lay Leaders Across North Carolina. Please join us on June 19 for an evening of Discussion and Planning.
Holly Near In Concert with Emma's Revolution, June 19, 2014
The Community Church of Chapel Hill UU, 106 Purefoy Road, Chapel Hill,
But, that's just the end of the evening. There's much more happening before the concert!
This is a rare opportunity that must not be missed. The Community Church of Chapel Hill is offering a very special late afternoon and evening of Justice discussion and planning, a supper, and an evening concert by Holly Near with Emma's Revolution. This is truly a festival of food for the head; then the body; then the heart.
.
To hear the Rev. Ruth Gibson and Frankie Price-Stern tell it, "It is time to stop the hand-ringing over Voting Rights, and move to action. They call us to this Standing on the Side of Love Concert with the shout that has echoed from the beginning of the Moral Monday Marches to the "Big one" in Raleigh on February 8: "Forward Together - One More Step". "This is the beginning of the Movement. The call is a fitting change from NAACP's "Forward Together - Not One Step Back". "We're not even thinking about stepping back", they said. "We invite you to take an important step forward."
5:00 pm. Arrive
5:30 pm. Former N.C. Senator Ellie Kinnaird will lead the key session focusing on Voter Access, and developing an action plan for next steps. There will also be an opportunity to learn more about our North Carolina Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Network.
6:30 pm. Discussion continues over simple supper of homemade soups (including a vegan choice) and salad will be provided, along with childcare, for a cost-covering donation of $5-8 per person.
7:30 pm The Holly Near Concert begins.
Tickets to the concert ($25) are only available in advance. No tickets will be available at the door. This concert will be sold out.
Secure your tickets at Community Church on Sundays or online at this link until sold out: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=QZADSWPGGN2F4
For reservations or more information contact Ruth Gibson, regibson@uuma.org.
Senator Ellie Kinnaird has consistently proposed and voted for legislation that reflects the values and concerns of her constituents, not the special interests. She has fought for: - an open and honest government that reduces the influence of money in politics and is responsive to the needs and will of the people of North Carolina;
- an opportunity for all North Carolinians to have a quality education from preschool through college regardless of background;
- an economy that offers competitive goods and services with a strong local economic base, a vibrant health care sector that assures access to affordable, quality care and economic development that creates jobs in the clean industries of the future;
- a healthy environment that preserves farmland and open space and provides clean air and water supplies now and for future generations; and
- laws that provide equal protection for all whether it's support for the Racial Justice Act or fighting to protect all NC families by opposing the NC Constitutional Amendment One that was on the ballot in May 2012.
Holly Near is respected around the world for her music and activism, her joy and passion inspire people to join in her celebration of the human spirit. Equally compelling, her music fully engages listeners in the world around them. Holly has made a career speaking to anyone in the world who believes in peace, justice, and feminism, a wonderful spectrum of humanity.
Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; she was named Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year and received the Legends of Women's Music Award. During her travels in the Pacific with the Free the Army show, Holly became a globally conscious feminist, linking international feminism and anti-war activism. She was an active participant and coalition builder in what she calls the "heady days" of 70s activism, when so many movements were gestating and jostling with one another.
Community Church is taking its justice commitment to the public square. Participants will invest a few hours on June 19 to learn, to network, to be inspired, and moved to informed action. Congratulations.

Sign up for June 28 work day with Community Housing Solutions
Have you signed up to be on the first team of rehabbing UUs? Rehabbing a home in Greensboro, that is! Stop by the JAT table after church or call Sara Bourquin at 632-1616 or email at sbourquin@triad.rr.com. You can hammer or paint or do some lawn work, or you can help feed the hungry workers. Tools and oversight will be provided by the organization. For those under 16 parental consent is required; those forms will be at the table.
JAT had previously selected Community Housing Solutions as the June recipient of UUCG's Share Half donations. The work team will join our physical presence to our monetary support.
Here is just a brief description of Community Housing Solutions:
"Our home repair program preserves homeownership for low-income families who cannot financially or physically do the repairs themselves . . . . . We rely heavily upon the support of volunteers and donors. ."
Watch Sunday Orders of Service and mid-week e-announcements for information on Team Leaders, times, and location. This will be a great day of working together to help a family right here in our city.

THANKS to eveyone who contributed to the 86 pounds of peanut butter and nonperishable food for the Greensboro Food Bank in the month of May. You are greatly appreciated! Becky Floyd
Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry June 2

Please Join us on the first Monday of each month when the Social Action Team organizes and serves a meal to the 100 residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry's night shelter. We usually have 10 to 12 volunteers from our church who buy, cook and serve the meal each month. We prepare on site the same meal each month, consisting of turkey chili, buttered bread, fruit salad, corn and bean salad and homemade cookies. Several of our members make cookies, and the residents love the chance to eat such delicacies. The ingredients for the meal cost a little over $90 each month, paid for by UUCG.
A team of volunteers from Hinshaw Memorial Methodist Church usually comes in to help serve the meal to the residents. If you would like to be part of this rewarding work, contact Ken Knight.
TAKING IT TO THE STREETS (TTS)
This project, co-sponsored by UUCG's Justice Action Team and the YRE Team, began last September with a simple idea: we see people all the time standing by the side of the road with signs asking for help. Some of us are comfortable giving them money. Some of us are not. And yet as UUs, we need to acknowledge their humanity, their dignity and find a way to reach out. So we began collecting individual-serving non-perishable food items and hygiene items. Kids who brought money to their Sunday classes for offering gave it to buy items for TTS bags. Individuals in our church contributed items to the lobby collection basket or gave a monetary contribution to purchase items for carebags. That first month, we assembled the collected items into bags, and made them available for anyone who was comfortable to distribute these bags to the less fortunate. The first month, we had enough donations for a dozen or so bags. And the project has grown each month since then, providing at least 3-4 dozen bags, all of which have been distributed within two weeks. Starting this month, TTS will become integrated
into the YRE curriculum, with carebag assembling taking place in the classroom. Continued congregational support (financial and material donations, and distribution of care bags) is much appreciated. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard, Director of YRE (uucgre@att.net).

DAMAGED HYMNALS | If you ever notice that a hymnal is damaged in any way -- broken binding, torn page, or even just a cover that is beginning to pull apart -- there is now a place to put it! On the bottom shelf of the hymnal bookcase that is closest to the kitchen, you will see a basket labeled (ornately) "Hurt Hymnals Here". Simply place the damaged hymnal in that basket, and the Music Team will repair it. Thanks for helping us keep our hymnal collection intact!
At least 6 hymnals were placed in the basket this month. We will be repairing damaged hymnals at our March 23rd Music Team meeting. Please continue to place hymnals whose bindings are pulling apart, pages are torn, etc.into the "Hurt Hymnals" basket.
Thank you from the Music Team |
