Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

The "church year" is not quite over yet!  (That doesn't really occur until the end of June.)  Yet, with the Annual Dinner and the Annual Meeting quickly approaching, both set for the weekend of May 17-18th, it feels like the end of my first year of being with you as a Developmental Minister is rapidly coming to a conclusion!  I am happy to say, without reservation, that even though this arrangement between you and I was not due to a normal search and call process, I think we are a good match!  And it seems from all indications that you agree!  As you may know, the board just agreed to extend my contracted time with you for two more years!  I want to express my thanks to all who took the time to respond to the recent round of surveys.  And I want to say thank you to all leaders, especially board members, and ministry team leads and members, and all the board committee chairs and members with whom I worked with for this almost year's worth of sometimes challenging, yet always satisfying work.  I feel immense gratitude for you all and your energy and am especially appreciative of the opportunities we have had to get to know one another, and to move together in service to this faith and to create the best future for this particular congregation.

The past eight months has been a great first chapter!

I must also add that every day I feel especially privileged just to be a UU minister.  So, thank you all for the employment security!  It is not the contract, but all those bright and shining moments when an "aha" happens, or a joke I am telling in a sermon "works", or we all feel the spirit "move" through music and song, weddings and memorials, when we share a tear together, or a triumph lifts our steps, or a visitor says...."wow",  I have been looking for you all for a decade or more...it is all those precious moments that happen and that will keep happening that make me want to be with you again and again.

Rev. Ann Marie

YOUTH RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

May brings us to the close of the YRE church year, with our final sessions of Chalice Club, The Wonderers, The Gatherers and the Sojourners being on Sunday, May 11.  Starting May 25, we will begin our Summer Sunday School Program for children aged Preschool thru 5th Grade.  This summer's focus: Cooperative Games.  Summer is also the time when some families think about camp.  Attending sleep-away camp is a milestone in the life of a child, and I was delighted to learn that in our neck of the woods, we have Shelter Neck Summer Youth Camp.   There are week-long sessions for Elementary, Middle School and High School aged students.  There are also partial and full scholarships available.  For more information, refer to the YRE Bulletin Board or contact Cindy Dillard, Youth DRE (uucgre@att.net).

From the Congregational President -  Charlotte Hamilton

Charlotte Hamlin

In recent weeks I have seen a myriad of fine examples of UUCG's congregational strength fulfilling our recent Stewardship campaign theme:   "We are a People Who..."

1)    Give generously to support our church's values and mission in this community.

Thanks to all who responded to the call of Rev. Alderman and the Annual Commitment Time committee to find satisfaction in giving to express personal values and support the church.  The pledge campaign came to a successful conclusion with more than 90% of members making a pledge. On April 27th the Board approved a balanced budget to be presented to the congregation for final approval on May 18th.  The budget sustains ongoing activities at a modest level with expansion in priority areas such as religious education with increased hours for Cindy Dillard and additional materials, as well as redesign of the church website.  Thanks to chair Nelson Stover and the outstanding ACT committee and Treasurer Lonnie Houck and the Finance Committee for their work.

2)    Welcome new members and engage them in worship, fellowship and service.

It has been a joy to greet an increasing numbers of visitors drawn to UUism and our church and to welcome new members who want to join in sharing our liberal faith journey and serving the community. Please invite your friends and neighbors to visit and experience the warm, vital quality of Sunday worship. Please also volunteer to be involved in church activities and social justice action.  We need your diverse talents.

3)    Collaborate thoughtfully to assess our progress and pursue a strategic vision.

The work of two standing Board committees last month highlights our commitment to collaboration and inclusive planning.  More than 50 people stayed after service on April 6th to take part in a strategic planning discussion led by Strategic Planning Chair Katja Brown and her dedicated committee.  As Elaine Stover led us through a review of activities of the past year and ideas for next year, I felt strong positive energy and excitement about the future.  Thanks to all who attended and members of Ministry teams, Board standing committees, and Congregational committees who reported on their activities to support the Practical Vision and generate new initiatives.  A second standing Board group, the new Accountability Committee, launched two pilot evaluation projects to get feedback on: 1) Ministerial Performance, and 2) Perceptions of progress in addressing the four established Developmental Goals by activities of the Minister and the Board.  In designing the Ministerial Peformance survey, Rev. Alderman introduced us to UUA guidelines for evaluating ministerial proficiency.  Both evaluations were distributed in late March the two evaluation to two sample groups totaling 52 congregants actively involved in lay leadership and worship, broadly representative of age, gender, and years in the church.  Highlights of responses to both surveys were reported to the Board on April 15th by the Accountability Committee.  Overall, the response to both assessments was extremely positive, and helpful suggestions were offered for future action. Highlights will be summarized in the upcoming Annual Report.  At a called meeting on April 27th, the Board unanimously approved the extension of a two year contract to Rev. Alderman for continued service as Developmental Minister.

4)    Govern through a democratic process.

Under UU congregational polity, UUCG is self-governing by a democratic process through which congregational members vote to determine governance by-laws, the annual budget and calling a settled minister.  I urge you to take part in the democratic process by reading the Annual Report to be published shortly and attend both the Congregational Dinner on Saturday evening May 17th and the Congregational Meeting after the service on May 18th.       We are a people who value and need your voice.

BELTANE CELEBRATION

Thursday, May 1,  7:00pm

April 30th/May 1st is known as Beltane (which means "fire of Bel"), or MAY DAY!

Beltane, like Samhain, is a time of "no time" when the veils between the two worlds are at their thinnest.  "No time" is when the two worlds intermingle and unite and the magic abounds!  Beltane celebrates the successful beginning of the growing season.

This celebration is about fertility: not just so folks will be blessed with children, but so crops will be fertile as well.

Come join us for the Beltane Celebration.  Bring your drums!! (or other instruments).  Join in the chanting and circling!

Our rituals are appropriate for all ages.  For questions, please contact me at msjazzzz@aol.com

Justice Action Team Update

Greensboro Housing Solutions

Join the JAT Home Rehab Team

Sign up for June 28 work day with Community Housing Solutions

The Justice Action Team of UUCG will partner with Community Housing Solutions to help make homes in Greensboro warmer, drier, and safer and to keep families in their homes.  Our first work on one of these homes will take place on Saturday, June 28.

Look for the JAT table after service beginning April 27.

During the service on May 25 Gene Brown, executive director of CHS, will speak about the purpose and work of Community Housing Solutions.

Here is just a brief description of Community Housing Solutions:

"Our home repair program preserves homeownership for low-income families who cannot financially or physically do the repairs themselves . . . . . We rely heavily upon the support of volunteers and donors. ."

JAT had previously selected Community Housing Solutions as the June recipient of UUCG's Share Half donations.  The work team will join our physical presence to our monetary support.

Can't wait to hear more about this initiative?  Joe Gecinger has been volunteering most Wednesdays on whatever project CHS sends him to.  He will be happy to tell you his experiences.  He looks forward to UUCG being a part of this terrific community resource.

If you are a confirmed do-it-yourselfer with home repair experience, you may be just the person to help lead our team.  Or if you would rather help from the comfort of your kitchen, you could be in charge of contacting team members or planning lunch.  No one has to work alone - we are hoping for many volunteers to make this a rewarding experience.

You can contact Sara Bourquin at 632-1616 or sbourquin@triad.rr.com and stop by the JAT table for more info and to sign up.

Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry May 5.

Please Join us on the first Monday of each month, the Social Action Team organizes and serves a meal to the 100 residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry's night shelter.  We usually have 10 to 12 volunteers from our church who buy, cook and serve the meal each month.  We prepare on site the same meal each month, consisting of turkey chili, buttered bread, fruit salad, corn and bean salad and homemade cookies.  Several of our members make cookies, and the residents love the chance to eat such delicacies.   The ingredients for the meal cost a little over $90 each month, paid for by UUCG.

A team of volunteers from Hinshaw Memorial Methodist Church usually comes in to help serve the meal to the residents.  If you would like to be part of this rewarding work, contact Ken Knight.

TAKING IT TO THE STREETS (TTS)

I am constantly reminded of the song lyrics by Phil Ochs: "There but for fortune, go you or I."  Such reminders come when I encounter someone holding a sign that says, "Homeless" or "Hungry".  Too often my response has been to turn away.  It takes an effort to see them as fellow human beings who, for reasons I cannot know, have landed in unfortunate circumstances.  There's that word - Fortune.  But it is not fortune, it is un-fortune.  We are inundated with news of massive tragedies such as those suffering in Syria, or the sad misfortune of the people in Ukraine, and feel helpless to effect change.  But we can help those who, for whatever reason, cannot help themselves right here where we live, by providing a "Care bag" of food and a few simple items that may, in some small way, ease their hardship and to say "someone cares."

When we became members of UUCG and learned about Taking It T-UU The Streets, we were immediately drawn to this mission.  We feel that this is such a small and simple action that we can take to perhaps relieve some of the burden of those who are living on the streets.  Taking It T-UU The Streets is one way that we can fulfill our need to give and we are grateful for the opportunity.

- Robb & Karen Fulkerson

THANKS TO EVERYONE who donated financially or materially to TTS. In April, we assembled 40 care-bags, all of which were picked up for distribution in less than 2 weeks.  Clearly, there is great interest in our community to help those in need.  Our next care-bag assembling will take place Thursday, May 8 6-7pm. To find out more about how you can help, contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

First Annual Reinhartsen Speaker Fund Presentation - Sunday June 8

In September 2012, we lost a treasured friend, Rev Steven Reinhartsen.  Many of us memorialized Steven through contributions to the church, which were divided between the UUCG Endowment Fund and the newly created Reinhartsen Speaker Fund.  A committee was formed to manage the speaker fund with the goal of selecting and arranging annual speakers who would exhibit and forward Steven's values.

We are very excited to announce the first speaker, Dr. John G Sullivan.  Besides serving as the Powell Professor of Philosophy Emeritus at Elon University, Dr. Sullivan has published 4 books and was the principal designer and former director of the Master of Arts in Applied Healing Arts Program at the Tai Sophia Institute for the Healing Arts in Laurel, MD.  The committee became aware of Dr. Sullivan through one of his books in Steven's personal collection.   Dr. Sullivan's bio says in part that his "... abiding interest is in the place where philosophy, psychology and spirituality -- East, West and beyond -- intersect and mutually enhance one another."  Those of us who were lucky enough to know Steven will recognize that intersection as one where Steven spent a lot of his time and energy.

Please mark your calendar for Dr. Sullivan's presentation, which will be part of our regular Sunday morning service on June 8th.

An Evening of Justice Discussion and Planning  June 19

Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of North Carolina

Holly Near In Concert with Emma's Revolution, June 19, 2014

The Community Church of Chapel Hill UU, 106 Purefoy Road, Chapel Hill,

But, that's just the end of the evening.  There's much more happening before the concert!

This is a rare opportunity that must not be missed.  The Community Church of Chapel Hill is offering a very special late afternoon and evening of Justice discussion and planning, a supper, and an evening concert by Holly Near with Emma's Revolution.  This is truly a festival of food for the head; then the body; then the heart.

.

To hear the Rev. Ruth Gibson and Frankie Price-Stern tell it, "It is time to stop the hand-ringing over Voting Rights, and move to action.  They call us to this Standing on the Side of Love Concert with the shout that has echoed from the beginning of the Moral Monday Marches to the "Big one" in Raleigh on February 8: "Forward Together - One More Step".  "This is the beginning of the Movement.  The call is a fitting change from NAACP's "Forward Together - Not One Step Back".  "We're not even thinking about stepping back." They said. "We invite you to take an important step forward."

5:00 pm. Arrive

5:30 pm. Former N.C. Senator Ellie Kinnaird will lead the key session focusing on Voter Access, and developing an action plan for next steps.  There will also be an opportunity to learn more about our North Carolina Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry Network.

6:30 pm. Discussion continues over simple supper of homemade soups (including a vegan choice) and salad will be provided, along with childcare, for a cost-covering donation of $5-8 per person.

7:30 pm The Holly Near Concert begins.

Tickets to the concert ($25) are only available in advance.  No tickets will be available at the door.  This concert will be sold out.

Senator Ellie Kinnaird has consistently proposed and voted for legislation that reflects the values and concerns of her constituents, not the special interests.

She has fought for:

  • an open and honest government that reduces the influence of money in politics and is responsive to the needs and will of the people of North Carolina;
  • n opportunity for all North Carolinians to have a quality education from preschool through college regardless of background;

  • an economy that offers competitive goods and services with a strong local economic base, a vibrant health care sector that assures access to affordable, quality care and economic development that creates jobs in the clean industries of the future;

  • a healthy environment that preserves farmland and open space and provides clean air and water supplies now and for future generations; and

  • laws that provide equal protection for all whether it's support for the Racial Justice Act or fighting to protect all NC families by opposing the NC Constitutional Amendment One that was on the ballot in May 2012.

Holly Near is respected around the world for her music and activism, her joy and passion inspire people to join in her celebration of the human spirit.  Equally compelling, her music fully engages listeners in the world around them.  Holly has made a career speaking to anyone in the world who believes in peace, justice, and feminism, a wonderful spectrum of humanity.

Near has been recognized many times for her work for social change, including honors from the ACLU, the National Lawyers Guild, the National Organization for Women, and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences; she was named Ms. Magazine Woman of the Year and received the Legends of Women's Music Award.  During her travels in the Pacific with the Free the Army show, Holly became a globally conscious feminist, linking international feminism and anti-war activism.  She was an active participant and coalition builder in what she calls the "heady days" of 70s activism, when so many movements were gestating and jostling with one another.

Community Church is taking its justice commitment to the public square.  Participants will invest a few hours on June 19 to learn, to network, to be inspired, and moved to informed action.  Congratulations.

DAMAGED HYMNALS
books clip artIf you ever notice that a hymnal is damaged in any way -- broken binding, torn page, or even jusa cover that is beginning to pull apart -- there is now a place to put it!  On the bottom shelf of the hymnal bookcase that is closest to the kitchen, you will see a basket labeled (ornately) "Hurt Hymnals Here".

Simply place the damaged hymnal in that basket, and the Music Team will repair it.  Thanks for helping us keep our hymnal collection intact!

At least 6 hymnals were placed in the basket this month.  We will be repairing damaged hymnals at our March 23rd Music Team meeting.  Please continue to place hymnals whose bindings are pulling apart, pages are torn, etc.into the "Hurt Hymnals" basket.

Thank you from the Music Team
Highlights, UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
  • Charlotte Hamlin, Board President, noted that the called Board meeting on Sunday, April 27 will be for finalizing the Developmental Minister's renewed contract and the 2014-15 budget to be presented at the May 17 Congregational meeting.
  • Lonnie Houck, Board Treasurer, reported Pledge income up $7,321 in March, which is about $2,000, or 2%., above YTD budget.  Expenses were down almost $2,000 in March compared to February. A "Next Year's Pledges Fund" has been created for reserving funds from members who prepaid next year's pledge.  Money will be transferred in July, at beginning of next church year. Delta (income-expense) is now positive by $2,453.
  • On behalf of Nelson Stover, Annual Commitment Time (ACT) chair, Lonnie reported results of the ACT campaign.  The total amount pledged is $177,125 with 94% of the 180 members pledging.  The proposed 2014-15 budget will be based on this amount.
  • Marie Houck, a member of the Accountability Committee, provided Board members with a summary of responses to the Developmental Ministry evaluation.  Board discussion of the results included strengths and opportunities for improvement.  The advantages of investing in UUCG website improvements were frequently mentioned by respondents.
  • Marty Stover provided Board members with the summary of responses to the performance evaluation of the Developmental Minister.  To protect confidentiality of a personnel issue, the board went into closed session to discuss the ministerial evaluation.  After reconvening, a motion was made and seconded to extend a two year contract to Rev. Alderman.

Additional details are available elsewhere in this newsletter or in reports posted at http://uugreensboro.org/friendsmembers/board-reports.html .  The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, May 20 at 7 pm and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
