|
Rev. Marti Keller
|
| Rev. Marti Keller is the co-editor of the just released Jewish Voices in Unitarian Universalism, the third in an emerging series of books on the sources of the Unitarian Universalist evolving, living faith tradition. The previous collections focused on Christian and Buddhist voices, both ordained clergy and lay members. What does this collection and especially Marti's personal experience of being a hyphenated Jewnitarian tell us about personal/cultural identity; ethnicity, and approaches to social justice?

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|

I have been joking with the board, telling them that the ACT (Annual Commitment Time) Kick Off sermon scheduled for March 2nd won't be the usual pleading for money. Instead it will be about another taboo topic! They have all been laughing, because everybody knows that church attendance goes way down when the annual pledge time comes around! And, now they know that some ministers have used the allure of that other uncomfortable topic, to get folks to come to church on kickoff Sundays!
I hope you will be there in your usual place, even though I promise I will not be employing the "bait and switch" technique to make sure you are! I am not going to talk about the church's need to receive, either. What I will be doing is exploring your need to give. I believe we all have a deep, universal need to give. Some of us give as a "natural" response to our sense of having been given to. Others of us have a need to "belong" and we will do what it takes to fulfill that deep need. For others of us it is a matter of honor to pay a fair price for what we have used and we give based on a fair exchange. Determining what your need is and helping you to satisfy your need is what you will hear about on March 2nd.
The board members must have already found their way to satisfaction as every one of them, already pledged!
Rev. Ann Marie

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education
|

Thanks to the support of so many, Youth Religious Education (YRE) continues to flourish. Sessions are engaging and timely, and class attendance is constant/growing. Over the past month, our youth have been learning seminal Bible stories, considering bullying and gender constructs, and engaging in community-building. And they have been guided by committed and nurturing volunteer teachers: Fred Lehman, Marty Ward, Manessa Green and Michelle Giorgi (Chalice Club); Dakota Spooner (The Wonderers); Ken Williams, Sara Chenoweth, Marty Bergman, and Jeni Gagne (The Gatherers); Lauren Houck, Benn Kuecker and Robin Lewis (The Sojourners), with the added assistance of Laura Graham, Michelle Lee, Michelle Puzio, and Sharin Francis.
YRE is still in need of a few more teachers-one to work with The Sojourners (6th-12th grades), and three to work with The Wonderers (Preschool thru 1st grade). Your commitment would be for no more than 2 Sundays per month through May 11. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard, Director of YRE (uucgre@att.net).
SAVE THE DATES:
3/2 (Sun)-9:30 am Chalice Club, 11:00 am YRE

CHOICES AND CHALLENGES March is always an exciting and challenging time for me, awaiting the first spring flowers after a cold winter, searching for details to complete my IRS forms, feeling the anticipation of taking part in Cabaret Auction and activities at UUCG and the community after winter hibernation. This spring is especially challenging for me as I complete prepare my house for sale and prepare to move to Friends Homes at Guilford. So I have been doing a lot of internal searching, both spiritual reflection and bean counting, as I think through what UUCG means to me and how best I give time, talent and treasure. In March we will be exploring "Stewardship" in depth as a congregation from multiple perspectives as the Annual Commitment Time (ACT) pledging campaign begins on March 2nd. I ponder the ways in which I am being good steward, doing my utmost to live out what I value in my personal life and finances and as a church member. Am I fully doing my part to support UUCG, its mission, staff, facilities and programs? I know that monthly bills come due for both the church and my home, even when I am traveling for an extended period and not directly using the services. As a retired educator, my discretionary resources are limited, and I have to choose to how much I can pledge for the coming church year so that my heart feels good about my role as a steward of UUCG and long-time Unitarian Universalist. I strive to be a responsible and generous steward of the church and help it to grow and expand its scope to reach more prospective UUs in the Triad area to enjoy this religious community as much as do.. The ACT Committee, chair Nelson Stover, with Joe Gecinger and Ann Dickinson worked with Rev. Alderman to produce a very thought-provoking brochure entitled "We are the People Who.... Connect in Community, Help Heal the World, and Grow in Commitment." They presented the brochure and pledge cards to Board members at the last board meeting on February 18th, and I completed mine. I feel good about the choice I made to increase my pledge as one committed to UUCG, and I feel good about being a good steward of our faith and community. I hope you will consider doing the same. Charlotte Hamlin, Congregational President |

Conversational Strategies to Build Trust, Resolve Conflict, and Increase Intimacy
"Although we are born with the gift of language, research shows that we are surprisingly unskilled when it comes to communicating with others. We often choose our words without thought, oblivious of the emotional effects they can have on others. We talk more than we need to. We listen poorly, without realizing it, and we often fail to pay attention to the subtle meanings conveyed by facial expressions, body gestures, and the tone and cadence of our voice-elements of communication that are often more important than the words we actually say."
Join us on the March 2 for a fascinating discussion of Compassionate Communication as taught by Newberg and Waldman
Sunday, March 9, 16, 23, 30, 9:30 - 10:30 am, A People so BoldThe rest of March we will continue a series called "A People so Bold". Now It's ACT
|
UUCG's Annual Commitment Time (ACT) begins this week and concludes on April 13th. ACT gives members and friends of UUCG an opportunity to show their generosity and commitment by making a financial pledge for the next fiscal year [2014-2015]. Next week you will receive a brochure highlighting the breadth of the programs that UUCG offers. The brochure includes a pledge card for you to indicate the level of financial support that you will contribute to this important work. You can return the pledge card by mail, you can put it in the offering plate on Sundays or you can give it to any Board officer, ACT Committee member or the minister. The Board will prepare next year's budget based on pledges received by April 13th so that the budget can be approved at the congregation's annual meeting in May.
Thank you for your support - the ACT Committee: Ann Dickinson, Joe Gecinger and Nelson Stover

|
ALL-CHURCH POTLUCK
Sunday, March 9, YRE will be sponsoring UUCG's quarterly all-church potluck in the RE wing after services. It will be held in the classrooms, in the continued effort to break down some real/perceived barriers between "back there" (where the kids are) and "up here" (where the rest of our church community is). This is a true potluck (no assignments), so bring your favorite dish to share with our beloved community. And if we have all desserts, so be it!!! Volunteers are welcome.
Please RSVP to Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net) so we know how many to plan for. And note on your calendars: our next all-church potluck will be after services on Sunday, June 8.

Justice Action Team - Our New Name
You will be seeing many references to JAT from now on. That is the acronym for the new name for the Social Action Team. At the February meeting the team voted to change the name to the Justice Action Team to more accurately reflect our purpose and projects. We cannot promise to be super(wo)men but we will give our best efforts. Watch for JAT activities and join us!
Monday Night Dinner at Urban Ministry March. 3

On the first Monday of each month, the Social Action Team organizes and serves a meal to the 100 residents of the Greensboro Urban Ministry's night shelter. We usually have 10 to 12 volunteers from our church who buy, cook and serve the meal each month. We prepare on site the same meal each month, consisting of turkey chili, buttered bread, fruit salad, corn and bean salad and homemade cookies. Several of our members make cookies, and the residents love the chance to eat such delicacies. The ingredients for the meal cost a little over $90 each month, paid for by UUCG.
A team of volunteers from Hinshaw Memorial Methodist Church usually comes in to help serve the meal to the residents. If you would like to be part of this rewarding work, contact Ken Knight.
Represent the UUCG April 5 by collecting food for the hungry
There will be another opportunity to help Greensboro Urban Ministry feed the hungry on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the Food Lion store at 4653 West Market Street. The food drive will need 8 volunteers, 2 volunteers to work each 2 hour shift from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. to collect nonperishable goods from the patrons of the store.
Please contact Becky Floyd at 336-852-3592 or rfloyd2@triad.rr.com to volunteer. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Peanut Butter Alert
Thanks to everyone at the Unitarian Universalist Church who contributed to the 108 pounds of peanut butter and nonperishable food collected last month for the Greensboro Food Bank. You are greatly appreciated.
THANKS,
Becky Floyd
Taking It T-UU The Streets (TTS)
THANKS TO EVERYONE who donated financially or materially to TTS. The project-only a few months old-continues to grow. We were able to build 36 care-bags this month (because of snow closures, Chalice Club assembled them on 2/16) and after less than a week, only 5 care-bags remain left to distribute for the month. Clearly, there is great interest in our community to help those in need. To find out more about how you can help, contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
Share Half Recipients
Throughout the year JAT will have items in the newsletter explaining the work of the less well known organizations that are recipients of Share Half in 2014
.

Guilford Green Foundation
One of our Share Half recipients scheduled for September This is their mission: "The Guilford Green Foundation seeks to courageously unite community by fostering organizations that advance LGBTQ persons and issues." They raise funds and then distribute them to local organizations who might not otherwise receive funding such as youth groups, health organizations, and faith organizations. The team chose GGF as a means of reaching high school LGBT youth, although we cannot designate our donations to a specific group. Our dollars will add to their funding. |
Finance Committee offering for Seniors in need of Tax Preparation Help
|

Wendell Putney will offer free tax assistance for seniors during March and April. Two dates have been set so far, Saturdays, March 8 and March 22 from 1pm to 4pm at the church. Service will include electronic filing of US and NC returns. Please, no large brokerage statements or complicated rental or business income. For married couples filing jointly, both must be present to sign the necessary forms. Additional times will be scheduled if demand requires.

Committee on Leadership Development is Seeking Your Input
|

At our annual meeting in May, the congregation will elect a new President, Vice President, two Board of Trustees members, and one member of the Committee on Endowment. From February through April, the Committee on Leadership Development will be identifying members to run for these offices. We are seeking members of the congregation who will provide strong leadership to help UUCG continue to grow spiritually and in numbers as we face together the challenges of the world around us
If you have a desire to serve the church, know someone who does, or if you have recommendations for others, please contact a member of the committee and/or fill out one of the nomination forms that will be at the church on Sunday mornings.
On the fence? Thinking about running but wonder what serving on the Board is like? Talk with one of our current Board members; their names and photographs are on the bulletin board in the hall outside the kitchen. Talk with someone who has served in the past. You'll hear what a rewarding and, yes, at times challenging experience it is. Service to the congregation is an important way that we act on one of the 7 UU Principles, "the use of the democratic process within our congregations."
In addition, nominations for the Committee on Leadership Development will be made from the floor and elected at the May meeting, so be thinking of and talking with people you believe would be effective members and willing to serve in that capacity.
Thank you for your help in assuring that UUCG has strong leadership in the coming year.

DAMAGED HYMNALS | If you ever notice that a hymnal is damaged in any way -- broken binding, torn page, or even just a cover that is beginning to pull apart -- there is now a place to put it! On the bottom shelf of the hymnal bookcase that is closest to the kitchen, you will see a basket labeled (ornately) "Hurt Hymnals Here". Simp
ly place the damaged hymnal in that basket, and the Music Team will repair it. Thanks for helping us keep our hymnal collection intact!
At least 6 hymnals were placed in the basket this month. We will be repairing damaged hymnals at our March 23rd Music Team meeting. Please continue to place hymnals whose bindings are pulling apart, pages are torn, etc.into the "Hurt Hymnals" basket.
Thank you from the Music Team

Moral March on Raleigh, Feb 8
|
THE UUCG Was There, Standing on the Side of Love!
Our Congregation was well represented at the Moral March held in Raleigh on February 8. Those on the bus we shared with the Piedmont Unitarian Universalist Church got to share meaningfully with our sister congregation. Those of us in carpools got to know those we were riding with much more intimately. Together we joined Unitarian-Universalists from all over the nation as well as other citizens from across the state and nation who know how important recent political changes are to the future of our Nation and State. We really are Standing on the Side of Love.
