THANK YOU!
Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

There are (at least) 3 things about to happen at the UU Church that might help you fulfill your New Year Resolutions!  No, we are not all going on a diet together!  First, I will be leading a four session Adult Religious Education class entitled "Promises, Promises".  On Thursday evenings, beginning at 7 pm and starting January 16, we will explore the history and theology of our covenantal faith and how that informs our present day regional and congregational organization.  Who cares?  And what does that have to do with my New Year's Resolutions?  Resolutions are all about the promises we make!   Why do we make promises?  Who do we make them too?  How do we keep them?  What happens when we fail to keep them?  What difference does it make?  All deeply spiritual questions!  We will ask all those questions and more...

Secondly, after the four sessions on "Promises, Promises"...we will continue on Thursday evening by exploring "The Wi$dom Path".  This is another Tapestry of Faith curriculum for adult UUs.  This one will be 12 sessions of looking at our relationship with money!  Come take a journey with me from dis-ease to ease!

The third opportunity to keep your New Year's resolutions will happen on 2 Saturdays in February and 2 in March...Dr. Rita Layson will lead 4 sessions called "Can you plan your death!".... Seriously, can you? These will be informative times with those in the know who can help you not only ask the difficult questions, but find answers right for you and your family.  No matter what your New Year's Resolutions are, I am guessing you are again promising to do something you've been putting off.  Promises, money and planning for dying....all opportunities to learn together, to be a faith community together!  Make one of your resolutions to be there!

In freeing faith,

Rev. Ann Marie

From Cindy Dillard, Director of Youth Religious Education

Cindy Dillard 2013

As happens at this time of year, I've been reflecting on the past year and dreaming of the year ahead...in my personal life, in the world at large, and in the life of my beloved community-UUCG.  Thinking about UUCG's YRE (Youth Religious Education) program for 2013, I am filled with gratitude, pride and love.  Over the past year, we have attracted enough families with children to grow our YRE program from two classes to three...but we don't have enough adults to walk with our children on their journey.

We need 4-5 more adults to complete the teaching teams.  The Teaching Team for Chalice Club (9:30-10:30) is blessedly filled with: Fred Lehman, Manessa Green, Marty Ward & Michelle Giorgi.  At the 11:00 hour, we have Lauren Houck, Benn Kuecker and Robin Lewis with our 6th-12th graders (Sojourners-still looking for one more teacher); Ken Williams, Sara Chenoweth, Marty Bergman, Tom Burwell and Jeni Gagne with our 2nd-5th graders (Gatherers); and Dakota Spooner and Cindy Dillard with our preschool thru 1st graders (Wonderers-still looking for three more teachers).

I was recently talking with Rev. Ann Marie about this situation, and she reframed my concern about trying to recruit teachers by stating that we need to be reminded: OUR CHILDREN -- they are ALL our children. And we ALL have a responsibility to raise our children in our faith.

It doesn't matter if you don't have children, or if you've never been a teacher.

We all have a responsibility to our children (as we do to one another).

  • If you delight in watching our youngin's come up for the all-ages story , you might find a new calling at UUCG as a YRE teacher.
  • If you have nurtured children in your life-as a sibling, parent, grandparent, guardian, big brother or big sister, you might find a new calling as a UUCG YRE teacher.
  • If you find yourself drawn in public to a child who is being emotional, and you approach (or consider) the child/family not with scorn or annoyance, but with empathy, you might be a UUCG YRE teacher.

If you would like to learn more about UUCG's YRE program, and if you'd like to learn how to get involved, please contact: Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

From the Congregational President -  Charlotte Hamlin

Charlotte Hamlin

The Roman god Janus, for whom the month of January is named, was the god of beginnings and transitions, often depicted with two faces....one looking backward and one looking forward, bridging the past and present.  As January moves us into 2014, I believe we at UUCG are at a good point to recognize the significant transitions made, recognize and appreciate all the constructive energy and accomplishments of our congregation in 2013, and also able to step forward into 2014 with anticipation of new initiatives and commitment to fulfilling our mission.

My "backwards Janus face" appreciates the value of the practical vision developed in last spring's strategic planning with widespread congregational involvement that sets before UUCG in the next few years as a dynamic and satisfying Place to Grow and Thrive with Diversity that Feeds the Spirit, Serving the Extended Community.  I already see good indicators of progress made through the fall in programs and services at church and in the community, active lay leaders and volunteers, new members, larger RE classes, fellowship events, and spirited participation in Sunday services.  I thank the hard working Board members and, on their behalf, thank the many, many congregants who gave so generously in 2013 of their time, energy, creativity, and financial resources serving as group leaders and volunteers, teachers, choir members, pastoral caregivers, coffee makers and kitchen cleaners-up, event planners, and building maintainers, to mention only a few ways of service.  We also extend special thanks to our outstanding staff members who have seen us through this ministerial transition year: Julie Hamilton, Mark Freundt, Cindy Dillard and Walter McCorey.

Last fall Rev. Ann Marie Alderman became our Developmental Minister, and my "forward Janus face" looking ahead sees 2014 as an exciting and productive year as she leads the Ministry teams and staff in collaborating with the Board and lay leaders on initiatives to advance our four strategic directions of Creating Meaningful Experiences, Communicating Effectively, Building Effective Stewardship and Continuing to Build Trust.  I predict that our progress in creating a positive congregational climate will flourish in the coming year as we strive to live out our values in covenant with each other.  2014 is the second year of the new governance model, and the Board and its committees are looking forward to increase clarity and assessment of policies, procedures, governance roles and accountability, to advance planning and ways to support the work of Rev. Alderman and the Ministry teams.  Special emphasis this spring for Board members will be to redefine stewardship as a congregation and support ACT.

Looking back and forward, I thank each of you and extend New Year's Best Wishes,

Charlotte Hamlin,  Congregational President

If you are looking for a way to be of service,  UUCG is in need of a few task oriented volunteers to take on a recreated Hospitality Team.  If you have two or three friends who would like be on this Team, I'd be happy to help you find a creative way to make sure there is a system in place for our weekly "coffee communion"!

See Rev. Ann Marie for more details or to volunteer!
Share the Plate Report

big-bills-money.jpg

The Social Action Team offers a heartfelt thank you to the UUCG congregation who contributed so generously to the Cash In Plate (Share the Plate) donations in 2013. Seventeen Guilford County organizations benefited from the outreach share of those donations.  A final accounting will be available after January, but it appears that undesignated cash increased throughout the year.  Your compassion and caring for the wider community is apparent.  The recipients for 2014 have been selected by the team and are listed in the Article below.  Each Sunday the recipient is noted in the Order of Service.

Share the Plate Donations for 2014

The Social Action Team of the UU Church of Greensboro has settled on the following organizations to receive half of the cash collections during 2014.  This is an important part of our ministry to support organizations that do good work in our local communities.

A Special Service Opportunity

Share Your Strengths with Others: Volunteer Tutor Training Opportunity

Around 1 in 5 adults in Guilford County - about 75,000 individuals - lack the basic skills to fill out a job application or read a children's book.  Another 25% cannot read at a high school level.  Adults with low literacy are more likely to be unemployed and to live in poverty.  Reading Connections provides programs focused on basic reading and writing, math, GED preparation, essential employment readiness skills, basic computer use, family literacy, and English skills for speakers of other languages.

Reading Connections, the largest community-based adult literacy agency in NC, provides free literacy services to adults in Guilford County who wish to improve their basic reading skills through trained volunteers working as one-to-one tutors and small group instructors.  Free training is offered for those who wish to become volunteer tutors.

Last year, more than 800 students were served by Reading Connections, but the need remains critical. Currently in Guilford County, there are more than 20 people waiting for a tutor.  Please consider sharing your strengths with Reading Connections and volunteer.  Volunteers can be matched with students individually or in small groups.

Highlights of the December 17, 2013 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
Board Activity
  • Lonnie Houck, Board Treasurer, reported that November pledge income was slightly down. Cumulative income to date was about $4,000 below the budget amount.  We received the $28,922 semiannual bank lease payment on December 6.  In the budget these funds are evenly spread out over six months, but the payment helped with cash flow.  The $4,000 we previously "borrowed" from the reserve fund has been transferred back into the reserve fund.
  • An update and timeline for the 2014 ACT (Annual Commitment Time) campaign was given by Joe Gecinger and committee chair, Nelson Stover.  March 2 is the ACT kick off date for the congregation.
  • Archival Records Committee chair, Sharin Francis, reported on the background, progress and current status of the archival records process.
  • Susan Hill served as process observer.
  • The Board accepted financial policy charters presented by Lonnie Houck, Board Treasurer, for the following: Memorial Fund, Sunday Morning Deposit, Minister's Discretionary Fund, and Reserve Fund.
  • The Board accepted the following two policies presented by, Michelle Lee, Policies and Procedures Committee Chair.
    • Policy on Committee, Team & Task Force Charters
    • Policy on Governance (This is shown below and will be posted on our website.)

Philosophy of Governance

The Congregation seeks to create a welcoming and supportive spiritual community guided by Unitarian Universalist principles.  The Congregation establishes governance by empowering leaders by election or call through the UUCG Bylaws.

The Board, as steward of UUCG's vision and fiscal resources, plans, oversees and supports organizational governance in service to the mission of UUCG.  The President guides the church as chief executive officer.

The Minister nurtures the congregation and staff through collaborative processes and inclusive programs which embody the mission of UUCG.  The Minister oversees ministry programs by acting as chief operating officer and chief of staff.

Accountable to ourselves, each other, and the transcendent mystery and wonder some people call God, we freely choose to be together in sacred covenant.

The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, January 14 at 7 pm and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.
