 Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie

 | |

For many the Winter Holidays are a time of merrily rushing with the presents to be with loved ones.  They are times filled with happy memories and the earnest desire to repeat or re-create those memories.  For others, the Winter Holidays are the hardest time of the year.  They can bring all too-vivid reminders of loss and pain and of expectations that weren't met.
The contrast between those who love this time of the year and those who can only think of them as a time to be suffered through can be a stark reminder that life does not treat all equally.   Far too many Holiday Seasons have gone by with those who dread this time of the year having to "go underground"; not able to say or display how they really feel.

Because we are a faith that affirms the worth and dignity of all, it is my hope that we will be ever so sensitive to our fellow beings.  Reach out to someone who may be sad, or just needs to know that someone cares.  Let us all remember to be gentle with each other.   That may also mean being gentle with those who mean well, but try too hard to get some of us in the holiday "mood"!

And, remember that we all may have intensified feelings of both joy and sorrow.  Be gentle with yourself, be gentle with others.   This is the season of both dark and light and of new born babies!  Remember that in a way, we are all born anew each and every day!

In freeing faith,
Rev. Ann Marie

We (as a culture) have entered a time of year that seems to always surf heightened periods of: crazy, joyous, disappointing, annoying, heart-warming, heart-breaking, exhausting and memory-making.  I am grateful that Andy "Hap-Happiest Time of the Year" Williams just chose to focus on the joyous aspect, because that's my favorite part...(though the tune does live on in my head long after I've heard it...)

Fortunately at this time of year -- despite our habits -- many of us choose to make time in our otherwise packed schedules to step out of our routines: for CELEBRATION and FELLOWSHIP and MUSIC and REVELRY and LOVE and INSPIRATION and SERVICE...and FOOD!

Among the many holiday festivities available to you and yours this month, please consider participating in these upcoming UUCG events:

Sun 12/8 (following the worship service-- 12:15-2p) YRE's quarterly "All-Church Potluck," in the RE wing. Last year, during each of our three Strategic Planning Sessions, folks said in different ways that it was a priority to better integrate our children/youth/young adults into the greater life of the church.  They didn't like that there was a "back there" (referring to the RE Wing).  In response to this, YRE has scheduled quarterly all-church potlucks, inviting everyone to break bread with our youngin's and their families and their teachers on their own turf (back there)...with the hope of breaking down boundaries and growing relationships.

Sat, 12/14 (preceding/concurrent with "Celebrating the Season" Adult Holiday Dinners)

YRE-sponsored youth fellowship 2-5 pm   Youth (6th-12th Grades) + Young Adults; games, community-building, leadership development

5-7:30 pmChildren (nursery through 5th grade), facilitated by youth and young adults.  For all: Pizza dinner, cookie-making, flubber, music, paper-chain, and more.

The cost for participants will be $5-10 per person, respecting that some folks can pay more and some folks can't pay anything.  Payment "in kind" is also welcome.  For those who would like to support this event, or learn more about UUCG's Youth Religious Education (YRE), please contact Cindy Dillard, Director of YRE ( uucgre@att.net) or Heather Rushforth, YRE Team chair (Heather Rushford's Email Link.)

The next quarterly meeting of the YRE Team will be Tuesday, December 3, 6-7:30 pm in the library. All are welcome.

Can you believe that Christmas is almost here?  As we move into the season of the darkest night and celebrate the return of the sun, the board has been hard at work making sure we are accomplishing our goals and moving forward together in harmony.  The board, the minister, and the Coordinating Council have been evaluating our roles, making sure we are honoring boundaries and supporting each other's work.     Towards that end, the Coordinating Council is in the midst of a major shift. Beginning immediately, the Coordinating Council will meet quarterly in February, May, August, and November.  In the other months, Rev. Ann Marie will be chairing the Ministry Team Lead meeting (which will be meeting at the same time, the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00pm). The Ministry Team meeting will be a great opportunity for the ministry teams to support each other.  All ministry team leads, committee chairs, and taskforce chairs will be encouraged to attend the Coordinating Council meetings.  This is really important so that everyone will be informed of the events of the church and direction in which we are moving.   Thank you, UUCG members and friends, for all your support and patience as our governance and ministry pillars continue to evolve in our work together. In faith, |

 Adult Religious Education in November
 |
We have a wide range of Adult Religious Education opportunities this fall at UUCG.  There will be Sunday morning programming from 9:30-10:30 and beginning again in mid-January on Thursday nights from 7:00-8:30.   Compassionate Communication will lead on the first Sunday 12/1. Compassionate Communication is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg.  Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence--    Acts of Faith:  Sharin Francis will continue leading a discussion on Eboo Patel's Acts of Faith on December 8, 15.  This is a remarkable account of growing up Muslim in America and coming to believe in religious pluralism, from one of the most prominent faith leaders in the United States.  Eboo Patel's story is a hopeful and moving testament to the power and passion of young people -- and of the world-changing potential of an interfaith youth movement.  Currently only $3.99 for the Kindle edition.  http://www.ifyc.org/about-us/eboo-patel      Submitted by Steve Pearsall

Acts of Faith Discussions- December 8 and 15
  |

Can we be more faithful Unitarian Universalists through working authentically with others whose faith perspective and commitments differ from our own?
Please join us for adult R.E. in the sanctuary at 9:30 am  Sunday, December 8 and 15 to explore this and other essential questions posed by Eboo Patel, UUA 2013 General Assembly Ware Lecturer and author of Acts of Faith .

Although Patel's memoir focuses on young people, his call to interfaith understanding and respect through side-by-side service and justice making work resonates with adults of all ages and life stages.  Patel was appointed by President Obama to the Advisory Council of the White House Office of Faith Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and serves on the Religious Advisory Committee of the Council on Foreign Relations.  He founded Inter Faith Youth Core in answer to his own wondering: Why do so many stories about religion these days feature young people fighting in the name of God?  Why isn't there a huge movement of young people from different faiths working together to apply the core value of all faiths-service to others?

 Yule Celebration December 19
  |
  Thursday, December 19, 2013
At Yule we celebrate the return of the sun, its journey continuing as it always does.

The Wheel has turned once more, and the earth has gone to sleep.

The leaves are gone, the crops have returned to the ground.

On this darkest of nights, we celebrate the return of light.

Bring your drums or other instruments.  Bring cookies to share.  Water and wine will be provided.  In the spirit of Yule, but rather than gifting each other; please bring a jar of peanut butter, or other non-perishable food, which will be gifted to the Greensboro Urban Ministry.

TAKING IT T-UU THE STREETS - Youth Social Action
  |

"I picked up two of the carebags from the basket in the church lobby.  But then found I was a little hesitant to hand them out, fearing that people might be scornful.  Then I encountered an older couple sharing the chore of holding the sign, one sitting while the other stood with the sign.  When I parked and walked over to hand them the bag, they were so receptive and appreciative.   I asked them where they were going to spend the night, and they were hoping to have enough for the $39 motel room that night.   I gave them just a few dollars... Their smiles gave me a lift all afternoon!"
Sara Bourquin

"The packages are great because they contain useful items that might be difficult for homeless people to obtain, especially if they don't have a vehicle.   I liked putting those items right in their hands.  It also felt more personal to park my car, get out and greet the person before handing them a care package.  I'm less inclined to stop when moving traffic is behind me, but it was suggested that I put on my car's emergency blinkers.  I'll try this next time, and hope other drivers will be inspired to see the homeless people they usually pass by in a new way."
Sharin Francis

This past month, our ongoing social justice ministry to "those we see on the streets/the needy/the hungry/the homeless" collected almost $80 in donations through Sunday school offertory, the lobby collection box, and a few "angels".  This money went to purchase individual-sized peanut butter, applesauce, granola bars, juice boxes and chapstick.  Additionally, many "in kind" donations were dropped off in the lobby basket, including sample-sized toiletries and non-perishable food items.

As always, on the 2nd Thursday of the month, there was a carebag "assembling party".  We were glad to be joined by the Daisy Troop # 2783, which brought their own donations and energies to the effort.  And in under an hour, we had assembled 60 carebags (almost twice the amount assembled in previous months-and these bags were PACKED!).

Our next carebag assembling party will be Thursday, December 12, 6-7pm.
For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).

A Merry Christmas for Your Family and Another
  |
Get your family into the holiday spirit early!  Help a struggling family provide a happy Christmas for their own family.  The Social Action Team has designated a family at Partnership Village to receive the generosity of the UUCG congregation.     The director has suggested Walmart gift cards; families can reach the store easily and they will get the most for the money.  You can purchase the gift cards or give cash or a check.  The Social Action Team will have a table in the foyer (look for the little tree) each Sunday through December 8, and we plan to take the cards to Partnership Village in early December so that the family can shop.   Partnership Village is a program of Urban Ministry that provides transitional housing for families in crisis.  With the program's support families regain stability and become independent again.  If the congregation responds as generously as they did in 2012, we may be able to give gift cards to two families!   SAT contact:   Sara Bourquin at 632-1616 or at  Sara's Email Link |

 Yard Sale Results
  | Thank you to everyone who helped out with the yard sale.  We earned $953.  From those who donated goods, who priced, sorted and displayed them, put out the signs, arranged the heavy items early Saturday morning, helped monitor and keep things arranged during the sale, provided cupcakes and cookies to sell, shopped, and collected the money, to the fabulous cleaner-uppers, a HUGE thank you.  It was a lot of fun being together with such wonderful people and meeting all sorts of new folks as they shopped.

What an amazing crew the cleaner-uppers were!  The yard sale ended at 12, and the clean-up crew packed up the leftovers, toted them out to the Goodwill truck, took down the tables, stored them away, vacuumed, and set up the sanctuary for Sunday service in just forty minutes!

Thanks to All Suzanne Deering

 We need a  Hospitality Team
 | You may have noticed that there was no coffee for some Sunday Services. That's because we need a Hospitality Team to prepare our coffee and clean up after Coffee Hour.
Not that long ago when I was fairly new to a UU congregation and didn't yet know I might be a UU minister one day....I volunteered to be a coffee host.  It was a great way to have something to do and meet new people at the same time.    If you are looking for a way to be of service,  UUCG is in need of a few task oriented volunteers to take on a recreated Hospitality Team.  If you have two or three friends who would like be on this Team, I'd be happy to help you find a creative way to make sure there is a system in place for our weekly "coffee communion"!

See Rev. Ann Marie for more details or to volunteer! |

 December cash in plate collections

 Thank you Weaver House Team
 | |

During the season of giving, it seems appropriate to recognize those who've made it possible for us to serve dinner at Greensboro Urban Ministry's Weaver House to hundreds of homeless people in the past year.

Assisted in set-up and serving by members of Hinshaw Methodist Church, the following volunteers have shopped, cooked, served, washed dishes or all the above so that we could serve the homeless on the first Monday of each month.  Dot Borei,Virg Buck, Nora Byrd, Sharin Francis, Charlotte Hamlin, Bill Haney, Jack Harrell, Barbara Hughes, Annetty Keonse, Ken Knight, Tim Leisman, Jessica Lynn, Carol Owens, Nancy Powersmith, Linda Shuee, Elaine Stover, Marty Stover, Earle Wrenn and Lynett Wrenn
Cookie providers have also brought smiles to those we serve and we thank the following people for baking or buying these popular treats at some time in the last year.  Christina Barrow, Sarah Bourquin, The Chalice Circle R.E. Class, Sue Cole, Suzanne Deering, Sharin Francis, Karen Fulkerson, Manessa Green, Phoenix Harmony, Liz Harrell, Michele Hutchins, Leslie Kalinowski, Mary Alice Knight, Michelle Puzio, Marianne Royle and Paula Swongeur.

Thanks also to anyone whose name might have been inadvertently left off due to incomplete records.  The combined generosity of all these folks has been an important part of our ministry in the larger community.

 Wanted Non-Violent Communications Books
 | |
Please look through your bookshelf to see if you have a copy of Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall Rosenberg.

At one time we had 7 copies.  Now we have none!  We are happy to know folks are using our church library.  If you do find a copy which belongs to UUCG, please return it to the Library so others can use it.  Thank you!

Summary of the November 19 UUCG Board of Trustees Meeting
 |
-          Action steps for meeting Board Goals for 2013-14 were discussed, revised as appropriate, and accepted.  It was noted that several of the actions steps have been completed and good progress is being made overall toward carrying out the goals.

-          Financial Policy: Policy update and development, an ongoing process, included discussion of the following drafts presented by Lonnie: Charter for Memorial Fund, Sunday Morning Deposit Policy and Minister's Discretionary Fund policy.Still pending: Policies for the Reserve Fund and the Reinhartsen Speaker Fund.  The December Board agenda will include a motion to accept the policies.

-          With executive committee approval, Lonnie transferred $4,000 from the reserve fund to carry us through until December when we will receive the biannual lease payment from the bank.  The funds will cover a temporary budget shortfall of about $2,500, resulting from slightly increased October expenses combined with October pledge income slightly below budget.  The money will be paid back to the reserve fund.  Pledge statements were mailed mid-October and Membership letters were mailed in November to encourage people to catch up on paying their pledges.

-          On behalf of Nelson Stover, ACT team leader, who was unable to attend the November Board meeting, Ann Marie gave an update from the recent meeting of the ACT team.  She presented the timeline for the 2014 Annual Commitment Time campaign, and Nelson will report on other developments at the December Board meeting.  The theme for ACT will be "We are the people who....give generously, give until it feels good."

The next Board meeting will be Tuesday, December 17 at 7 pm and is open to anyone who wishes to
attend.
