| Welcome to the November edition of our church Newsletter!
I loved marching in the CROP walk under the UUCG banner with other UU's. Our delegation joined many regional churches in this Walk to Alleviate Hunger, and we made sure that the Unitarian-Universalist Church of Greensboro was well represented and seen by all.
This month we'll have another chance to interact regionally in a very meaningful way. Our friends Rev. Michael Dowd and Connie Barlow will be interacting, not just with us on Sunday morning the 3rd, but with Greensboro's larger religious and environmental communities on Friday and Saturday. There will be an material presentation at the UUCG Friday night and then an Environmental Forum on Saturday at the Congregational United Church of Christ. I
The Friday and Saturday events offer both individual opportunity and a clear chance for our church to get more involved in the regional response to the world's growing environmental crisis that we need to interact with and part of.
If your team or committee has any submissions for the December newsletter or if you have questions for the editor, please send them to commuucg@bellsouth.net.

In a recent national study, the growingest group among American seekers are those who respond to the question of religious affiliation with: None. At the same time, the numbers of people who call themselves spiritual has grown. What do the Nones look for when they seek a spiritual community? Is Unitarian Universalism ready to welcome them?

Reflections from Rev. Ann Marie
|
I love November! Sometimes when I am asked what spiritual path I follow, I say I am a religious humanist on Monday, a neo-pagan on Tuesday, a radical Christian on Wednesday, a Buddhist on Thursday... Well, you get the idea! I am flexible when it comes to labels. Yet, I am almost always, every year, a dedicated follower of earth-based spirituality every day of the week during the month of November! I love the beauty of the trees this time of year. I love the crispness in the air. I love the gentle rains. The earth (at least the part we live on) is turning towards winter and the gentle movement and all it brings is just glorious. The great "turning towards" reminds me that each life cycle is short, yet so distinct. My wish is that we will all find times to slow down and enjoy what is before us this month. If you are driving along hurrying to work or to the store and see a tree a flame with color, stop and let the beauty fill you. If you walk outside to get the mail or pick up the newspaper on one of these fall mornings, feel the air and say a prayer to the universe, just because you are alive! In freeing faith, Rev. Ann Marie

YRE
As UUs, we are taught to value the wisdom found in the many religions of the world. An excellent opportunity to explore some of those religions will be taking place this month in Winston-Salem. Families with children thru Fifth grade are invited to Interfaith Winston-Salem's Festival of Faith and Culture, Sunday, Nov. 10, 2-5:00 pm, at the Gateway YWCA, 1300 S. Main Street, W.S. They will learn about other faiths and cultures in four activity centers: 1) arts and crafts, where they will make take-home items-Hannukah menorah, henna tattoo, UU chalice, Buddhist prayer flag-that tell stories about other traditions; 2) performance, where they will learn through storytelling, music and acting; 3) cultures, where students from Wake Forest University will share from African (Kwanzaa), East Asian, Southeast Asian/Middle Eastern, and South/Central/Latin American traditions; and 4) a food court, where samples of foods from other countries will be available. The event will involve students and leaders from several cultural organizations at Wake Forest University and from local religious groups, including Temple Emanuel, the Annoor Islamic Center, Green Street UMC, Wake Forest Baptist, the Buddhist community, and the UU Fellowship of Winston-Salem. The festival is free and open to children from all cultures and faith traditions. For more information, visit: http://www.if-ws.org/interfaith-news/loadsofactivitiesforkids

From the Congregational President - Charlotte Hamilton

It is my honor to see UUCG from a number of "seats", and I like what I see these days as autumn leaves fall and UUCG swings into full action! From my seat in the choir on Sunday mornings, I am uplifted by what I see all around me during the worship service, before and after ...heightened energy, commitment, and sense of community. I see energy in the increasing number of visitors and new members attending worship services and taking part in church activities, including Sunday morning Adult RE classes, with more babies and toddlers in the nursery, children enjoying stories during the worship service and then going to exciting RE programs, and newcomers joining Wednesday evening potlucks. I feel a commitment to deepening understanding of Unitarian Universalism, the history of our liberal faith and our guiding principles, through worship leadership that Rev. Alderman and the Worship Team provide that intensify my feeling of being in a sacred space and re-commitment to living our faith with the "fire of commitment" stirred by Mark Freundt, the choir and musicians at Expressions.
I sense a deepening sense of community seeing congregants support old friends and newcomers through times of joy and sorrow, with special outreach of the Lay Pastoral Care Associates and Care Team, and engaged conversations after service. I sense renewed energy for social action and community service projects, serving our community as well as our congregants. Fellowship, fun...and service. I feel all of that and hope you do also. Many heads, hearts, and hands are needed to build and sustain the energy, commitment and sense of community, and I hope new members and visitors will feel included and invigorated by participation in some aspect of our spiritual life and social action.
Another "seat" that inspires me is as president of the congregation and facilitator of the UUCG Board. There I see hard-working Board and committee members working with diligence and effectiveness to fulfill their duties and to collaborate with Rev. Alderman to refine our evolving governance processes and review policies and procedures to benefit our congregation and our facilities. As Sharin Francis reports elsewhere in this newsletter, the Board is looking to policies that strengthen the wellbeing and future of the congregation, and its financial stewardship.
As Thanksgiving approaches, I personally give thanks for UUCG and its central role in my life, to Rev. Alderman, and to the many, many people who build spiritual direction, personal strength and fellowship through our interactions. I welcome your thoughts about how things look from your "seat", and I hope that you also feel the satisfaction that I do in our UU spiritual community.
Charlotte Hamlin,
Congregational President

Adult Religious Education in November
|
We have a wide range of Adult Religious Education opportunities this fall at UUCG. There will be Sunday morning programming from 9:30-10:30 and Thursday nights from 7:00-9:00. Compassionate Communication will lead on the first Sunday 11/3. Compassionate Communication is based on the work of Marshall Rosenberg. Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is based on the principles of nonviolence-- the natural state of compassion when no violence is present in the heart. NVC begins by assuming that we are all compassionate by nature and that violent strategies -- whether verbal or physical -- are learned behaviors taught and supported by the prevailing culture. NVC also assumes that we all share the same, basic human needs and that each of our actions are a strategy to meet one or more of these needs. People who practice NVC have found greater authenticity in their communication, increased understanding, deepening connection and conflict resolution http://www.cnvc.org/ Into the Beautiful North book discussion October 27 Greensboro's 2013 One City One Book selection is Into the Beautiful North by Luis Urrea. UUCG will have a discussion of the book on Sunday, October 27 at 9:30. Sponsored every two years by Greensboro Public Library, One City One Book is an opportunity for the community to learn from each other's thoughts and deliberations. Since its inception in 2002, the mission of this project has been to connect the people our community through literature. To learn more about One City One Book and related events, visit http://greensboro-nc.gov/index.aspx?page=848 For more information about the discussion, please contact Sharin Francis. Acts of Faith Sharin Francis will also lead discussion on Acts of Faith by Eboo Patel over three weeks November 17, December 8, 15. We will first show this year's Ware lecture featuring Dr. Patel on November 10. Acts of Faith: The Story of an American Muslim, in the Struggle for the Soul of a Generation Acts of Faith is a remarkable account of growing up Muslim in America and coming to believe in religious pluralism, from one of the most prominent faith leaders in the United States. Eboo Patel's story is a hopeful and moving testament to the power and passion of young people -- and of the world-changing potential of an interfaith youth movement. Currently only $3.99 for the Kindle edition. http://www.ifyc.org/about-us/eboo-patel Thursday nights our Developmental Minister, Rev. Ann Marie Alderman, is leading "Faith Like a River" the Tapestry of Faith curriculum on UU History. Submitted by Steve Pearsall

TAKINGT T-UU THE STREETS - Youth Social Action, Nov 14
|
"We have been giving out the care bags. I have always wanted to be able to help in some way, but I've never been in a financial place to give out money. The people I have given the bags to are always always so grateful. It brings tears to my eyes each and every time. We have given out probably close to a dozen, and each time they are so happy to see it. I even said to one man that I was sorry I didn't have any money, and he said "that's okay, this helps a lot. Life's not all about money." It was a powerful reminder of my own priorities and of how grateful I am that I am okay...that I have people willing to help me with a kind word or financial help if I need it. But I think the most impressive thing about the whole experience has been my daughter. She keeps a sharp eye out from the back seat and never fails to point out anyone she sees. She always wants to be the one to give the bag, forcing me to slow down and pay attention, to look them in the face. She even insisted that we add plastic spoons to each bag so that they could eat their applesauce and peanut butter more easily. It has been a great way for her to develop her own compassion and empower her to make the world a little better." Robin Lewis
During the month of October, "Taking It T-UU The Streets" received over $40 in cash -- through Sunday School offertory and the lobby collection box -- plus many in-kind donations towards our ministry to help support those in need on our streets. If you are able to help, suggested donations to the basket in the lobby include trial-sized hygiene items and single-serving non-perishable food items. For more information, please contact Cindy Dillard (uucgre@att.net).
We will next assemble care bags on Thursday, Nov. 14 from 6-7pm and will be joined by members of Girl Scout Troop 02783.

Make it a Merry Christmas for a Family
|
The Social Action Team has chosen again this year to give gift cards to a family that is temporarily living in the apartments at Partnership Village. And if the congregation is as generous as last year, two families may receive these gift cards! We will accept donations in November and get them to the family early in December so that parents can shop for their children. Families who find themselves without a place to live are given temporary homes at Partnership Village, another of Urban Ministry's wonderful projects. Their time there is limited, but includes assistance with job skills and budgeting of income as well as a day care to make job searches easier and getting to a job possible. Watch for details about the family and the ways you can donate in the Order of Service in about two weeks. You can also contact Sara Bourquin at 632-1616 or sbourquin@triad.rr.com. |

CROP Walk Report
|
UUCG team marches for Greater Greensboro CROP Hunger Walk and Run
Special thanks to all the UU's who joined the UUCG"s CROP Walk Team and those that sponsored our participation in this year's event. We raised $898 for the CROP walk. With the multiplier effect on these donations, we've provided 7,184 meals and returned about $225 for Urban Ministries and our own regional food bank. All this was all accomplished while sharing a good time walking and talking under our congregation's banner to the tune of the fiddle and guitar. See you next year! |
Nonperishable Food Drive Update
|
THANKS to Manessa Green and Dakota Spooner, Bolling Lowrey, Annetty Koense, Shavonta and Ava Kuecker, Chris Voorhees, Ken Knight, Sue Cole, Sharon Goll, and Becky Floyd for collecting 798 pounds of nonperishable food and $64.59 in cash for the Greensboro Food Bank at the Food Lion at 4653 West Market Street on Saturday, October 5, 2013.
Thanks also to an unknown person who donated another 120 pounds in the UUCG name on Friday night so that a total of 918 pounds was collected for the Food Bank this weekend.
|
We need a Hospitality Team
| You may have noticed that there was no coffee on a couple of Sunday services in September. That's because we need a Hospitality Team to prepare our coffee and clean up after Coffee Hour.
Not that long ago when I was fairly new to a UU congregation and didn't yet know I might be a UU minister one day....I volunteered to be a coffee host. It was a great way to have something to do and meet new people at the same time. If you are looking for a way to be of service, UUCG is in need of a few task oriented volunteers to take on a recreated Hospitality Team. If you have two or three friends who would like be on this Team, I'd be happy to help you find a creative way to make sure there is a system in place for our weekly "coffee communion"!
See Rev. Ann Marie for more details or to volunteer! |
