From Rev. Posa |
Congratulations, UUC Greensboro! I am very excited for you, that Rev. Ann Marie Alderman has been hired by the UUCG Board as your new Developmental Minister, starting Aug. 1 of this year. I have every confidence that she will serve you well in this period of development for the congregation. Keep in mind that as your Developmental Minister for a 3-5 year period, Ann Marie has been hired by the board to guide you through the developmental focuses of discerning identity, deepening right relations, strengthening stewardship and clarifying membership. After that time, the congregation will have the option to call Ann Marie to be your long-term, settled minister. I pray that for Rev. Alderman, and for UUC Greensboro, this next phase of your ministry is blessed and fruitful. (On a personal note, my congratulations also to Ann Marie, and her partner, Rev. Robin Tanner, Sr. Minister at Piedmont UU Church in Charlotte, NC; they are getting married! The wedding will be on Friday, May 3rd. I wish them both every happiness.)
It's a time of change for my own life and ministry as well. As I write this, I am in the interim search process, seeking my next interim ministry to start in August. Yesterday I had a phone interview with the search committee at one church; earlier today, I spoke with a fellow minister about another church. It is a busy time for me, but a hopeful one. I cannot reveal details at this point, but there it is very likely that by Sunday, May 12 - and perhaps as early as Sunday the 5th - I will be able to share with UUCG where my ministry will take me next.
And I will have a very tangible transition this summer, as we move. My last sermon at UUCG will be on June 16. My last formal actions as minister of this congregation will be at General Assembly (GA), our national UUA business meeting in Louisville, Kentucky, serving as your delegate. To arrive at GA (and the pre-GA Ministry Days), I actually will have to leave Greensboro that same day. Suzi and I will come to church the morning of June 16 with our car packed, the movers having arrived the day before to collect our other belongings; we will leave Greensboro that afternoon, for a month or more of intentional homelessness. After GA, we will spend a couple of weeks visiting family and friends in Texas, before heading to...wherever...to move in and begin the next phase of our lives.
When times of transition occur, it's natural for people to worry, to feel anxious. Sometimes anxious people fall back onto old, familiar habits, whether or not those habits are good. In the last 2 years, this church has made incredible strides in the health of its interpersonal dynamics. A couple of years ago, you had a period of intense, entrenched, passionate arguments for competing interests, from people (on many sides) who were perceived as having their heels dug in; triangulation, gossiping, and taking sides were seen as widespread. Now, conflicts are much smaller in scale, mostly addressed in direct communication, before they have the tendency to escalate, and unhealthy conflicts - while not completely eradicated - are much fewer, less frequent, and smaller in scale than they were before.
During this time of transition, especially the 6 weeks or so between my departure and the beginning of the developmental ministry, the anxiety might lead some folk to revert to the old patterns of escalating conflict. But the difference now, is that UUCG is far better equipped to address such acting out much more effectively than before. Your new governance system clarifies where & with whom authority lies for numerous particular decisions, and many of you have studied the concepts of systems dynamics in healthy congregations, along with techniques of compassionate communication and mediation. Even more importantly, this congregation better understands itself now as a covenanted community. When an individual or small group falls out of covenant, each and every other person has the power and the responsibility to call them back into covenant, lovingly - yet firmly - naming the transgression and reminding one another of the shared promises we make to one another. If this ever proves difficult, the members of the Healthy Congregations Committee stand ready to assist. I trust the congregation is well-positioned to continue increasing its health and well-being.
As I slowly prepare to leave you, let me offer a gift to you, which several of you have requested. They are the chalice lighting words I say every Sunday I lead worship. The first three sentences (through "...a gift from life itself.") are adapted from the chalice lighting words of my colleague Rev. Mark Christian, of First Unitarian Church of Oklahoma City; the rest are my original words:
"This is the day that has been given to us. This day we could not have created, nor earned, nor deserved. This day comes to us as a gift - a gift from the universe, a gift from God, a gift from life itself. Let us receive the gift of this day with gratitude for our blessings, with humility for our shortcomings, and with hope: that we will continue to transform our lives, and transform our world. And so we light the flame in our chalice, symbol of our freely covenanted Unitarian Universalist faith, that binds us together in beloved community, and inspires us to faithful service."
In faith, Rev. Eric Posa

The month of May will see a shift in UUCG's religious education programs for preschool-aged children thru young adults. Current programming-"Wonderful Welcome" (9:30am for preschoolers thru 5th Grade), "Spirit Play" (11:00 am for preschoolers thru 5th grade) and "Circle Worship" (11:00am for 6th grade thru young adult)-will conclude for the school year on Sunday, May 12. The following Sunday, May 19, will be a "Music Ministry" service, a time for all ages to gather and celebrate the many "Alleluias" in their lives. Then, on Sunday, May 26, we will begin our multi-age summer program, "Keepers of the Earth." Children aged preschool thru fifth grade will begin in the Sanctuary in the 11:00 service, then join in room 6/7 to explore Native American lore and stewardship for all living things. Looking backward and looking forward as May blossoms around me and church matters come to resolution, my heart is filled with gratitude and optimism about the future of our congregation. Exactly two years ago in May, Rev. Eric Posa was selected by the board as our Interim Minister, and I am grateful for the leadership and guidance he has brought to the transition process of spiritual support and healing, long-range planning and implementation of the new governance structure. This May UUCG is poised to move to another level of mission and service with the hiring by the board of our new Developmental Minister, Rev. Ann Marie Alderman. Bringing more than 12 years of experience in UU ministry and broad knowledge and skills, she will providing leadership and support as we work to addressing our developmental issues and advancing our work on vision and strategic planning developed in the past year in collaboration with layleaders and our dedicated staff. Having talked with her several times in the past week, I am confident that she will a very good match for our church at this time in our development, and I hope you will join me in welcoming her at the "meet and greet" later this month (details forthcoming) and when she becomes our minister officially in August. May 19th is an important date to put on your calendar and plan to attend the annual congregational meeting after the service. A major agenda item will be changes to UUCG's membership bylaws were proposed by the Governance Task Force after months of deliberation and research and approved by the board in April for congregational discussion and approval. The revised bylaws establish clearer expectations of what membership means and how members are expected manifest commitment the mission, goals, and financial stability of the church. Please read and consider the proposed membership bylaws which have been posted on the website and in weekly announcements, on the bulletin board by the kitchen, and by Sharin Francis elsewhere in this newsletter. At the congregational meeting, the board will also present for approval next year's projected budget developed by Lonnie Houck and the Finance Committee based on the pledge campaign conducted by Nelson Stover and the hard working ACT committee. Thanks for their efforts and to all the individuals willing to make pledges of whatever amount to support UUCG financially for the important work planned for the coming year. The following slate of candidates will be presented at the annual meeting: Secretary: Sharin Francis, Treasurer: Lonnie Houck Board Members at Large: Sue Beck, Katja Brown, Ken Knight Member of Committee on Endowment: Ken Williams Absentee ballots are available from the Congregational Administration. Childcare is provided. The Saturday evening before the congregational meeting, I hope to see many of you at the Annual Congregational Dinner on Saturday evening, May 18th. This important celebratory and community affirming event is being planned by a Coordinating Council group led by Karen Madrone and Cindy Williams. Please sign up to attend and be a table leader for this enjoyable and important community building event. We will recognize the outstanding work of volunteers on various teams, committees and project groups, and the staff and "behind the scenes" dedicated layleaders who carry out a wide range of programs and services on our behalf. Which ever direction I turn my head...backward over the past two years with gratitude for all we have accomplished with Rev. Posa's guidance or forward to the coming churh year with happy anticipation of Rev. Alderman's arrival...I feel pride and appreciation for UUCG as a caring and committed congregation. Thanks for all that you do to make it possible. Charlotte Hamlin, congregational president |
Welcome our New Developmental Minister: Rev. Ann Marie Alderman |

At a special called meeting on April 30th, the UUCG board approved the recommendation of the Developmental Task Force (DFTF) to hire Rev. Ann Marie Alderman as our Developmental Minister for 2013-2014. She will begin August 1st with anticipated ministry for 3 - 5 years with the possibility to be called as settled minister after that period. A native of Jacksonville, FL, Rev. Alderman has served three UU congregations for a total of 13 years. In Florida she was a Director of Religious Education and an Associate Minister. She served as the minister of congregations in Pennsylvania and in North Carolina. She received her undergraduate degree from Florida State University in Religion and the Master of Divinity degree from Vanderbilt Divinity School. She brings broad career experience to her ministry, including training in Clinical Pastoral Education, Chaplaincy for five years at a medical center, managing a family business for 15 years and training as an automobile mechanic. Most recently Rev. Alderman was Minister of the UU Congregation of Greenville, NC for five years before moving to Charlotte at the end of last year to join her life partner, Rev. Robin Tanner. She is active in UU denominational affairs at the national and state level and was recently re-elected as director at large to the board of the Southeast Region. Rev. Alderman comes highly recommended by leaders at the congregations where she has served who were consulted by the DFTF. She was commended for her spiritual leadership and inspirational preaching, outstanding organizational skills, knowledge of UUism and religious education for all ages, advanced pastoral care and training in crisis intervention, and her collaborative leadership style. She has actively led her congregations in multi-faith, multi-cultural and ecumenical social justice advocacy. The DFTF believes that Rev. Alderman's skills and experience are an excellent match for UUCG's Developmental Needs identified in the past year: Discern Identity, Deepen Right Relations, Strengthen Stewardship, and Clarify Membership. An opportunity to meet and welcome Rev. Alderman is being arranged for the near future. I urge you to help her feel at home in our UUCG family and find opportunities to know her as a person. Rev. Alderman will report to the UUCG in August 2013. Charlotte Hamlin, congregational president/member of the Developmental Focus Task Force. April 30, 2013 |

Adult RE Classes in May- By Steve Pearsall |

Sundays in May we will be discussing Religious Literacy; What Every American Needs to Know and Doesn't by Stephen Prothero. Prothero argues that the United States has the highest percentage of people who profess a belief in God and the lowest of those who really know about religion in the western world. He follows the initial argument with two other sections. The first tells the history of how we got to the current situation. The second is a proposal for religious education in schools and colleges.
Prior to class, please do the following:
Prothero's Quiz http://www.pewforum.org/newassets/protheroquiz.pdf
Pew Forum Survey http://features.pewforum.org/quiz/us-religious-knowledge/Beleifnet Belief-o-matic
Even if YOU don't know what faith you are, Belief-O-Matic® knows. Answer 20 questions about your concept of God, the afterlife, human nature, and more, and Belief-O-Matic® will tell you what religion (if any) you practice...or ought to consider practicing.

Reading the book for class is preferrable, but not required.

Annual Dinner Saturday, May 18 |

The Annual Dinner
Celebrating Our Gratitude
Make plans to attend the UUCG Annual Dinner on Saturday evening, May 18, at 6:30.
Once a year we gather to recognize those who have served our congregation by participating in the work of a ministry team or governance committee. Please join us for food, fun and fellowship!
Come to the Annual Dinner on May18st
This is the event where we celebrate the end of the church year and honor those who have given so much of their genius, time, talent and sweat for the well-being of our church and its congregants.
Sign-up by May 12 on the bulletin board in the hallway by the kitchen.
The dinner will be organized by tables of 8-10 people. We will be randomly assigning people and couples to tables. Table hosts will be contacting you about what you can bring to the dinner.
Be a Table Host at Our Annual Dinner
Each table has a host that decorates the table according to the theme of Gratitude and provides all the decorations and plates and everything else that is needed to eat a meal. Some bring their own dishes from home and some use paper products, whatever goes with their theme. In the past there have been Christmas in May tables, Australian Outback and garden party tables. One host even fabricated a rainbow that arched from one side of the table to the other.
Being a Table Host is an easy way to contribute to the success of our annual gathering. You can decide on a type of cuisine (e.g., vegetarian, ethnic, or anything that inspires you). All you need do is contact the 8-10 people assigned to your table, coordinate their contributions to the dinner, and arrange for table decorations.
Child care will be provided if requested.
This year, 'Dinning for Friends', a major fundraiser for Triad Health Project (THP), is also on May 18th. THP and the work they do had been supported by UUCG for a very long time. This year, if you would like to make a donation to THP and 'Dining for Friends', you will receive tickets to the dessert function at the Coliseum.

We have learned a good bit about Narrative Mediation so far and have begun to practice some of these skills in role-play mediation sessions. Next we will be studying transformative mediation.
We still welcome new students as well as volunteers to participate in role-plays.

Bridging Ceremony
|

Often, UU congregations shepherd their youth coming into adulthood with a Bridging Ceremony. If you know of a high school senior who would like to participate in a Bridging Ceremony, please contact Rev. Eric Posa at uucgminister@bellsouth.net or RE Coordinator Cindy Dillard at uucgre@att.net.

What's Happening with the Service in the Park
|
It has been a tradition for many years now to have our worship service on the first Sunday in June billed as "Worship in the Park". This year we will not be worshiping in the park. After holding discussion in a Worship Team meeting and at the Council of Committees, it was decided to forgo this service this year.
Many reasons were cited, among them that it is more than a minor undertaking to move the necessities for a service to the park nor does it look good for visitors to finally decide to try us out and arrive at church to find an empty parking lot. But the major factor comes down to finances. It costs money to rent the park. Neither the Worship Team nor the Fellowship Team has the funds to support it this year and the general church budget is too overtaxed as it is to pay the rental fee.
Hopefully pledges and funds will come forth and we will have a better budget season next year so that will be able to return to the park in 2014.

Many Hands opportunities in May | For UUCG, our mission of creating a welcoming and supportive spiritual community means providing a beacon for people of different beliefs who seek a faith community with an open mind. It has been said that a smile is the light in the window of your soul. While this is true, another way to keep the light shining in our collective window is to share your time and talent. And volunteering is a wonderful way to get acquainted with other UUs. Thanks to Ann Galiger, Lindsey Canard and Dakota Spooner who have stepped forward to help the Communications committee with newsletter proof-reading and Facebook and Twitter administration. Thanks also to our volunteer coordinator, Sue Sherwood, for matching up volunteers with the appropriate congregational leaders. She reminds team and committee chairs to let her know of any jobs or projects for which volunteers are needed. She is usually in the church office on Tuesday mornings and can be reached there at 856-0330.
